2.22.14 SOFTBALL: Rohr Shuts Out Union as Cavs Split Saturday

Softball, 2014-02-22

(JACKSON, Tenn.) – After dropping to Truman 2-0 in the first game of the Union University Softball Classic on Sunday, Walsh came back and had an impressive 2-0 extra innings win against the hosting Bulldogs. The Cavaliers are now 2-2 while Union is 8-6.

Casi Rohr (Jr., Massillon, OH/Perry/Toledo) was masterful in the circle as she went the distance for a complete game, 2-hit shutout. She struck out 12 in the afternoon game and didn’t walk a single batter as she improved to 1-1.

Both teams played well defensively as it wasn’t until the top of the eighth inning when Walsh scored. Per rules for extra innings, Abby Reusser (Fr., Orrbille, OH/HS) was automatically placed on second base to start the frame. After Sam Troxell (Jr., Cuyahoga Falls, OH/HS/Youngstown State) reached on an infield single, both runners stole second and third, respectively. Marissa Bondoni (So., Alliance, OH/HS) became the heroine of the afternoon with a single to center that brought both runners home for the only score.

The first game of the day was a little more difficult for Walsh as Truman the second game in as many days. The Bulldogs of Truman added single runs in the second and fifth frames to set up the final score.

Quartni Whited (Fr., Akron, OH/Springfield) lost her first decision as she gave up two runs on five hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

Walsh will return to the diamond in sunny Florida over spring break for the Dot Richardson Games. The Cavs will play 10 games over six days. They will start on Sunday, March 2 against the University of the Sciences at 9 a.m. before taking on Wheeling Jesuit later that morning. All games will be played at Hancock Field in Clermont, Florida.
