2.23.14 BASEBALL: Cavs Fall Twice to Slippery Rock

(CHILLICOTHE, Ohio) Walsh (1-3) lost both ends of a double header vs. Slippery Rock (3-1) at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe today.

The Rock blanked the Cavs 3-0 in the first game, and won 10-3 in the nightcap. 

Slippery Rock scored an unearned run in the third inning off of Walsh starter Matt Iosue (Fr., Mayfield, OH/Mayfield Heights), and then added two insurance runs in the fifth in the opener.

Iosue (0-1), who was charged with the loss, pitched well allowing only four hits in four innings. He fanned three.

Walsh was held to three singles by Slippery Rock starter Kyle Schneider, who went the distance in picking up the win.

In game two, Slippery Rock touched Walsh starter, and loser, Jared Bettura (Jr., Canfield, OH/HS) for a single run in the first and two more in the third. Danny Roper came (Jr., Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) on in relief in the third and pitched until the seventh.

Walsh scored in the bottom of the fourth when Brook Clark (So., Canton, OH/McKinley) broke up a no-hitter with a one-out single that scored Jordan Shank (Jr., Canton, OH/GlenOak). Walsh added their second run when Jake Palidar (Sr., Wadsworth, OH/HS/Marietta) scored on a wild pitch in the fifth.

Walsh came to within a run, at 4-3, in the bottom of the sixth inning when Drew Link (Sr., Granville, OH/HS) scored on a swinging bunt single, and throwing error on ball hit by Austin Szink (So., Canton, OH/Jackson). Szink injured his hamstring reaching second base on the play, when the ball was thrown into rightfield.

Slippery Rock put the game away in the seventh, sending 12 men to the plate and adding six unearned runs.

Walsh heads to Tampa for the weekend for a three-game series with the NCAA ll defending national champs, the University of Tampa. The teams play a double header on Saturday, and a single game on Sunday.
