Men's Basketball, 2012-02-04

Walsh (19-4) inched to within one-win of their eighth consecutive 20-win season, and 23rd of all time, with a commanding 121-75 win over visiting University of Akron-Wayne College (15-13) today.  The Cavs can reach the 20-win plateau against Point Park University on Tuesday night in an American Mideast Conference game at home at 8 pm.  The game will be broadcast live on NewsTalk 640 AM WHLO and streamed live on TEAMLINE.

Walsh trailed just once, at 2-0, in the 46-point romp.  The Cavs shot 75% from the field on 27-36 in the first half and led 64-36 at the half.  Rian Burrell (6-3, Fr., Zanesville, OH/HS) scored 21 of his game-high 30 points in the first half, hitting 10-12 from the floor.  Walsh placed four players in twin figures in the first half.

The Cavs led by as many as 51 points in the second half, outscoring the Warriors 57-39 in the final 20 minutes.

Burrell finished the day 13-20 from the floor and handed out a game-high seven assists.  Burrell received plenty of help, as Jeff Copeland (6-5, Fr., Toledo, OH/St. John’s Jesuit) and Cameron Mitchell (6-4, So., Cincinnati, OH/Taft) each had career days.  Copeland, starting in place of L. J. Sutton (Sr., 6-7, Youngstown, OH/Cardinal Mooney) who turned his ankle in practice on Thursday, scored a career-high 22 points and hauled down a career-high 14 rebounds.  Mitchell had a career day with 20 points, 11 rebounds and five assists.  Wesley Carlson (6-7, Fr., Cincinnati, OH/Christian Hills/Fishburne) added a career-high 15 points.  The Cavs were also playing without point guard Brad DuPont (6-0, So., Massillon, OH/Jackson/Wheeling Jesuit) who was out with food poisoning.

Ron Kinney (Sr., 6-7, Cleveland, OH/Rhodes) was also in double figures with 15 points.

Deshon Hudson led Akron-Wayne with 25 points.

Walsh shot 61% from the field on 47-77, and handed out 20 assists.  They out rebounded the Warriors 54-28.
