2.7.13 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cavs Downed by No. 1 Ashland

(Ashland, Ohio) – Top-ranked Ashland showed once again why its undefeated as the Eagles defeated Walsh 76-58 at Kates Gymnasium. The Cavaliers fall to 6-13 overall and 3-12 with the loss. The Eagles remain undefeated at 23-0 overall and 16-0 in the GLIAC.

The Cavaliers took an early 5-2 lead at the start of the game before No. 1 Ashland scored the next 10 points and held the lead for good. Still, Walsh hung around for most of the first half. At the break, the Eagles held a 38-28 lead. In the second half, Ashland pulled further ahead and led by as many as 21 with 2:42 left in the game.

Maggie Berry (Jr., 6-0, Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph Academy) played a strong game and finished with a team-high 20 points after she made 7-of-11 from the field that included four 3-pointers. She also led the team defensively with six rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Tracy Payne (Sr., 5-5, Danville, OH/HS/Notre Dame College) joined her in double-figures with 16 points.

Ashland’s Daiva Gerbec led all scorers with 23 points.

Walsh shot well from the field and made 48 percent of its shots in the first half, but couldn’t keep it up as only 37.5 percent of its shots fell in the second half.

Ashland’s big advantage came on the glass as the Eagles out-rebounded the Cavs 40-27.

The Cavs will close out their four-game road stretch at Lake Erie on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on 95.9 WNPQ The Light.
