2.8.14 MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD: Groubert Blazes to First Place In Mile Run

The Walsh men’s track and field team had an eventful weekend with athletes competing in a couple of meets. The Cavaliers were running, jumping and throwing in meets at Mt. Union and at SPIRE in Geneva in the NCAA Division II regional team meet and had high finishes in both.

Justin Groubert (Jr., Hartville, OH/Lake) was the highlight of the day as he won the mile run at SPIRE with a time of 4:16.7, just off the mark from a national qualifying provisional time. He led his race from start to finish. Also racing in SPIRE was Naimbai Njerakey (R-Fr., Seven Springs, VA/Wheaton) who finished second in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 15:07.41.

At Mt. Union, Sherman Kortze (Fr., Green, OH/CVCA) led the charge with a first place finish in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.04. He was also on the Cavs’ 4x400 meter relay time that finished second with a time of 3:26.32. Also on the squad were Seth Wieland (Fr., Uniontown, OH/Green), Paul Sonego (Fr., North Ridgeville, OH/HS), and Joseph Mikulin (So., Akron, OH/Manchester).

Other second place finishers included Jackson Zaremba (Jr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 8:55.98 and Craigh Dougherty (Jr., Clinton, OH/Manchester) in the 400 meter dash with a time of 52.21.

Matt Mizer (So., Canton, OH/Perry) finished third in the 1,000 meter run with a time of 2:45.76 and Wieland finished the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.16 for a fourth place finish to round out the Cavs’ placers.
