2.9.12 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Cavs Fall to Notre Dame College 71-62

(South Euclid, Ohio) - Walsh fell on the road to Notre Dame College by a score of 71-62 Thursday evening in a non-conference matchup. It was the first of three-straight games on the road for the Cavaliers (13-13). The Falcons (11-11) have now won four of their past five games.
Notre Dame used a barrage of three-pointers to aid its offense on the night. The Falcons hit 11 total and shot 45.8 percent from beyond the arc. Overall, Notre Dame shot 43.3 percent from the field.
The Cavs trailed by five to start the second half, but made an 8-0 run to start the second half and take a 44-41 lead. Tracy Payne (Jr., 5-5, Danville, OH/HS/Notre Dame College) hit Walsh’s only three-pointer of the game just under two minutes into the second half to tie the game at 41-41, and a free throw by Tanisha Lawler (Fr., 5-7, Euclid, OH/Hathaway Brown) and a basket by Kristi Yoder (Sr., 6-1, Millersburg, OH/Hiland) gave Walsh its largest lead of the night. Notre Dame responded with an 8-0 run of its own to make the score 49-44.
Consecutive baskets by Maggie Berry (So., 6-0, Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph), Whitney Dabbelt (Fr., 6-1, West Carrollton, OH/Arch Bishop Alter), and Lawler gave the Cavs the lead once again at 50-49 with 10:33 remaining, but it wouldn’t last long as the Falcons went on an 11-0 run to take the lead for good. It would be five minutes until the Walsh scored again.
Emily Taylor (Fr., 5-6, Elyria, OH/Elyria Catholic) paced the Cavs’ offense with 14 points on 5-11 from the field and added three assists. Payne, playing in her first game against her former school, scored 11 points and had four steals. Tara Gallupe (So., 6-0, Pittsburgh, PA/Avonworth) was the final Cavs player in double-figures with 10 points. Yoder led the team in rebounds with five.
Notre Dame will travel to Walsh on Saturday, Feb. 25, to play the Cavaliers on Senior Day. Walsh returns to action on Saturday as the Cavaliers travel to Cedarville for another non-conference game. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. The Yellow Jackets defeated the Cavs 76-59 in the second game of the season.
