"Marks 12th, Klein 13th at NAIA Championships"

Cara Klein (So., Green, OH/HS) and Qiana Marks (So., Akron, OH/Buchtel HS) performed well at the NAIA Track and Field Championships held at Olathe, KS last week. Klein reached the semifinals of the 800m before finishing 13th (2:21.31). Marks was 12th in the high jump (5.02.25). Sheila Greller (Fr., Fairview Park, OH/Magnificat HS) placed 14th in the discus (129'5").

"Cavs Break School Records and Qualify for NAIA Championships"

Both Cavs' teams traveled to Slippery Rock and Baldwin Wallace this past week to compete in two year-end meets. At SRU, Sheila Grellar (Fr., Fairview Park, OH/Magnificat HS) took first place in the hammer and discus, broke the school record in both events, and also automatically qualified for the NAIA championships in the discus. She threw 138'8" in the hammer breaking the previous Walsh record by more than seven inches (131'7") and threw 140'11" in the discus (138'11"). Stacy Kirby (Fr., Rome, OH/Grand Valley HS) took first place in the 100m hurdles (15.22) and 400m hurdles (66.38). Athena Culverhouse (Fr., East Canton, OH/HS) won the 100m (12.80) and 200m (26.83). Gary Robinson (So., Tallmadge, OH/HS) took second place and set a new school record in the men?s long jump (23'8.5"). At BW, Kara Klein (So., Green, OH/HS) finished third in the 800m (2:18.49) and provisionally qualified for the NAIA Championships later this month in Kansas. Kirby also won the 400m hurdles (66.86).

"Cavs Fourth at AMC Championships/Klein Wins 800m"

Walsh finished fourth at the AMC championships held Saturday at Houghton College. Cara Klein (So., Green, OH/HS) was the only Cavalier to win an event, as she captured the 800m (2:20.29). Qiana Marks (So., Akron, OH/Buchtel) placed second in the high jump (4'11") and long jump (16'10.5") and placed fifth in the triple jump (33'9.25"). Stacy Kirby (Fr., Rome, OH/Grand Valley HS) was third in the 400m hurdles (1:06.71) and fourth in the 100m hurdles (15.52). Both the Cavs 4x400m and 4x800m relay teams also took second place in their respective events.

"Cavs Fourth at AMC Championships, Klein Wins 800m"

Walsh finished fourth with 83 points at the American Mideast Conference championships held at Houghton College on Saturday. Cara Klein (So., Green, OH/HS) was the only Cavalier to win an event, as she captured the 800m (2:20.29). Qiana Marks (So., Akron, OH/Buchtel) placed second in the high jump (4'11") and Stacy Kirby (Fr., Rome, OH/Grand Valley HS) was third in the 400m hurdles (1:06.71).

"Cavs Compete at Slippery Rock Invitational/ Qiana Marks Provisionally Qualifies for NAIA Championships"

The Cavalier track and field team traveled to Slippery Rock this past Saturday for the SRU Invitational. No team scores were recorded for the event. Qiana Marks (So., Akron, OH/Buchtel), a 2001 NAIA National qualifier, provisionally qualified for the 2002 Championships this past weekend in the women's high jump. She also placed third in the event after clearing 5'4.25". The Cavs 4x400m relay team of Stacy Kirby (Fr., Rome, OH/Grand Valley HS), Jessica Scheeser (Fr., Akron, OH/Green HS), Cara Klein (So., Green, OH/HS), and Athena Culverhouse (Fr., East Canton, OH/HS) finished second in the event after finishing in 4:09.10. Klein also took third in the 400m (60.30). The Cavs travel to Houghton College this Saturday for the American Mideast Conference Championships.

"Kirby Qualifies For Nationals"

Sophomore Cara Klein (Green, OH/HS) and freshman Stacy Kirby (Rome, OH/Grand Valley HS) were the top finishers for the women at the Mt. Union Invitational last Saturday. Klein won the 800m run in 2:23.70. Kirby took first in the 400m hurdles after finishing in 66.40. She also qualified for the NAIA Championships in the 100m hurdles. the Athena Culverhouse (Fr., East Canton, OH/HS) also performed well for the Cavs. She finished second in the 400m (60.71) and helped lead the 4x400 relay with Kirby, Klein, and Qiana Marks (So., Akron, OH/Buchtel HS) to a second place finish (4:09.10) in the event.

"Cavs (18-8)Finish Third at Case Western Invitational/ Sheila Greller Provisionally Qualifies for NAIA Championships"

The women's track team traveled to Case Western on Saturday for a snowy track meet. The Cavs finished third overall with 81 points. Oberlin won the invitational with 120 points and Cuyahoga Community College was second with 97 points. The Cavs travel to Mount Union this Saturday. Freshman Sheila Greller (Fairview Park, OH/Magnificat HS) provisionally qualified for the NAIA National Championships after taking first place in the women's discus with a heave of 133'2". Provisional qualification is 133', standard is 138'. Other first place finishes came from Stacy Kirby (Fr., Rome, OH/Grand Valley HS) in the 100 hurdles (15.5) and the 400 hurdles (66.55) and Cara Klein (So., Green, OH/HS) in the 800m (2:27.81).

"Women Place Third at Muskingum Invite"

The women performed well at the Muskingum Invitational, placing third with 99 points. They are at Wooster this Saturday. Stacy Kirby (Fr., Rome, OH/Grand Valley HS) shined for the women winning the 100h (16.15) and the 400h (1:08.31). She was also a member the winning 4 x 400 relay team, along with Athena Culverhouse (Fr., East Canton, OH/), Cara Klein (So., Green, OH/HS) and Addie Tomlinson (Jr., Cortland, OH/HS). Culverhouse also won the 200m (28.41) and Qiana Marks (So., Akron, OH/Buchtel HS) won the triple jump (32'4").

"Cavs at South Carolina Invite"

Both the men and women's teams traveled to Charleston, South Carolina for their spring trip where they competed at Charleston Southern's Buccaneer Invitational. Competing teams included Charleston, Charleston Southern, Citadel, Radford, Detroit, South Carolina, Claflin, Liberty, and Savannah State. Many of the Cavs fared well against these top NCAA teams. The women were paced by freshmen Sheila Greller (Fairview Park, OH/Magnificat HS) and Stacy Kirby (Rome, OH/Grand Valley HS). Greller finished third in the discus event with a heave of 120'1" and fourth in the shot put (35'6"). Kirby placed third in the 400m hurdles finishing in 1:09.38 and eighth in the 100m hurdles (16.76). Other top finishers included Cara Klein (So., Akron, OH/Green HS), who was sixth in the 800m (2:26.69) and Athena Culverhouse (Fr., East Canton, OH/HS), who was sixth in the 200m (27.21) and eighth in the 100m (13.6).

"Cavs Compete at NAIA Indoor National Track & Field Championships"

Eight members of the Cavalier men and women's track team traveled to Johnson, Tennessee for the NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships this past weekend. Gary Robinson (Fr., Tallmadge, OH/HS) turned in the highest finish for the Cavs. He placed seventh in the men's pentathlon with a total of 3,404 points. Bryan Clay from Azusa Pacific won the event (3,851 point). Kevin Surnear (So., Fairless, OH/HS) also turned in a fine performance. He finished eighth in the men's shot put with a heave of 51'2.25". This was his second appearance at the indoor tournament; he placed 20th last year. George Theodoris (So., Fort Meyers, FL/HS) finished eighth in the triple jump with a distance of 45'11.25". TJ McMichael (So., Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph HS) competed in the 55m dash and Jeremy Roush (Fr., Massillon, OH/Jackson HS) competed in the 55m high hurdles. Neither qualified for the semifinal round. McMichael turned in a time of 6.83 and Roush finished in 8.26. Qiana Marks (So., Akron, OH/Buchtel HS) turned in the best finish for the women. She placed 15th in the high jump after clearing 5'1". Stacy Kirby (Fr., Rome, OH/Grand Valley HS) competed in the 55m high hurdles. She finished fourth in her heat with a time of 8.84. Cara Klein (So., Akron, OH/Green HS) ran the 800m where she clocked in at 2:25.25. She advanced to the semis but did not qualify for the final round.

"Women (9-9) Cavs Finish 5th at Mt. Union Invitational/Kirby Shatters Mark"

The Cavs placed fifth in the nine team Mt. Union College Invitational over the weekend. This Friday they travel to the University of Findlay.The women were paced by freshman Stacy Kirby (Rome, OH/Grand Valley HS). Kirby set a new record in the 55m high hurdles (8.94) in the preliminaries. She finished second in the finals (8.95). Kirby also notched a fourth place finish in the 500m (1:23.94). Sheila Greller (Fr., Fairview Park, OH/Magnificat HS) took first in the shot put with a throw of 38?11?.5. Cara Klein (So., Green, OH/HS) placed second in the 1,000m (3:17.80) and third in the 400m (1:02.39) and Qiana Marks (So., Akron, OH/Buchtel HS) placed second in the high jump (5'02).

"(5-5) Women Compete at Findlay, Qiana Marks Break School"

Records...Both the men's and women's track teams competed at the University of Findlay this past weekend. Sixty-six teams attended the event including more than 1,800 athletes. The women turned in some fine marks at the meet. Qiana Marks (So., Akron, OH/Buchtel HS) placed fifth in the high jump, clearing 5'5". By doing so, Marks improved her personal best (5'4"), breaking the school record (5'4") set by Cindy Harris in 1984, and automatically qualifying her for the indoor national championships. She also finished 11th in the triple jump (32'7.25"). The Cavs 4 x 400m relay team consisting of Stacy Kirby (Fr., Rome, OH/Grand Valley HS), Athena Culverhouse (Fr., East Canton, OH/HS), Cara Klein (So., Green, OH/HS), and Marks finished 12th with a time of 4:16.87. Sheila Greller (Fr., Fairview Park, OH/Magnificat HS) placed 16th in the shot put (37'9.25") and Culverhouse was 18th in the 200m, turning in a time of 27.7 seconds.

"(5-5) Indoor Season Begins With 5th Place Finish at Ohio Northern"

Walsh traveled to Ohio Northern University this past Friday for their season opening indoor track meet. They finished fifth out of 10 teams. The University of Findlay won the meet. The women's team turned in three third place finishes. Cara Klein (So., Green, OH/HS) took third in the 800m with a time of 2:28.09. The Cavs relay team of Athena Culverhouse (Fr., East Canton, OH/HS), Jennifer Ritz (Fr., East Canton, OH/HS), Jennifer D'Atri (So., Independence, OH/HS), and Qiana Marks (So., Akron, OH/Buchtel HS) finished third in the 4x200 relay with a time of 1:54.50. Walsh's 4x400 relay team of Klein, Marks, Culverhouse, and Stacy Kirby (Fr., Rome, OH/Grand Valley HS) also finished third with a time of 4:20.46.The women compete at the University of Findlay this Friday and Saturday.
