"Walsh University Signs Two to Track/Cross Country Scholarships"

Walsh University's Men's Cross Country and Track and Field Coach, Dan McCallion, has announced the signing of Steve Mackle (Malvern, OH/HS) and Anthony Rich (Canton, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas HS) to letters of intent. Both student-athletes will continue their academic and athletic careers at Walsh this coming fall just like their fathers did under Coach McCallion's direction years ago. Mackle earned four letters in track and two letters in cross country at Malvern High School. He qualified for the state meet four times and was conference champion five times. Most recently, Mackle finished fourth in the state in the 1600m run. Besides excelling on the field, Mackle also earned Scholar Athlete honors and is a member of the National Honor Society. Steve is the son of Nick and Georgie Mackle of Malvern, Ohio. He plans to major in computer science at Walsh. Rich, a three-sport athlete from St. Thomas Aquinas High School, earned four letters in track. Rich specializes in the decathlon, pole vault, and 400m. He was a two-time conference champion in the pole vault and cleared a best 12'6". Rich also earned the Knightliners Scholar-Athlete Award and Coaches Award. Anthony, who plans to major in accounting and/or history, is the son of Stephen and Barbara Rich of Canton, Ohio.

"Surnear Earns NAIA All-American Honors With Record Throw in the Shot"

Walsh University sophomore Kevin Surnear (Fairless, OH/HS) has been named a Track and Field All-American by the NAIA. Surnear placed fifth in the shot put at the recent NAIA Championships in Olathe, KS. Surnear had a Walsh school record toss of 53'5" to record All-American honors. He also placed 15th in the hammer throw. Walsh's Gary Robinson (So., Tallmadge, OH/HS) placed 10th in the long jump (21'3"), George Theodoris (Jr., Fort Myers, FL/HS) 11th in the triple jump (46'6") and Pete Quilligan (Sr., Cleveland Hts., OH/Benedictine HS) 15th in the marathon (2:45:43.41). Walsh, as a team, placed 58th overall.

"Cavs Break School Records and Qualify for NAIA Championships"

Both Cavs' teams traveled to Slippery Rock and Baldwin Wallace this past week to compete in two year-end meets. At SRU, Sheila Grellar (Fr., Fairview Park, OH/Magnificat HS) took first place in the hammer and discus, broke the school record in both events, and also automatically qualified for the NAIA championships in the discus. She threw 138'8" in the hammer breaking the previous Walsh record by more than seven inches (131'7") and threw 140'11" in the discus (138'11"). Stacy Kirby (Fr., Rome, OH/Grand Valley HS) took first place in the 100m hurdles (15.22) and 400m hurdles (66.38). Athena Culverhouse (Fr., East Canton, OH/HS) won the 100m (12.80) and 200m (26.83). Gary Robinson (So., Tallmadge, OH/HS) took second place and set a new school record in the men?s long jump (23'8.5"). At BW, Kara Klein (So., Green, OH/HS) finished third in the 800m (2:18.49) and provisionally qualified for the NAIA Championships later this month in Kansas. Kirby also won the 400m hurdles (66.86).

"Cavs Third at AMC's/Theodoris Top AMC Male Athlete"

Walsh finished third at the AMC championships held Saturday at Houghton College. The Cavs' George Theodoris (Jr., Fort Meyers, FL/HS) earned Male Athlete of the Meet honors for his first-place finishes in the 400m (48.96), triple jump (44'07"), and 4x100 relay (42.21), a third-place finish in the long jump (21'6.75"), and a fifth-place finish in the 200m (22.53). Sean Miner (Jr., Creston, OH/Norwayne HS), T.J. McMichael (Jr., Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph HS) and Ryan Kumpf (Fr., Massillon, OH/Jackson HS) comprised the remainder of the winning 4x100 relay team, which broke a school record. Kevin Surnear (Jr., Fairless, OH/HS) won the shot put (50'2.75"), placed third in the hammer throw (154'9") and fifth in the discus (127'2"). Chris Calderon (Fr., Strasburg, OH/HS) won the discus with a toss of 131'11" and placed sixth in the hammer (13') and the shot put (41'5.25"). Walsh's 4x400m relay of Theodoris, Kumpf, Gary Robinson (So., Tallmadge, OH/HS), and Jeff Ellerhorst (So., Garrettsville, OH/Garfield HS) also took second place, finishing in 3:21.39, which broke a school record. Walsh is at Toledo on Friday and Saturday.

"Cavs Third at AMC's, Theodoris Top Male Athlete"

Walsh finished third (132 pts.) at the American Mideast Conference championships held at Houghton College on Saturday. The Cavs' George Theodoris (Jr., Fort Meyers, FL/HS) earned Male Athlete of the Meet honors for his first-place finishes in the 400 meters (48.96), triple jump (44-07), and 4x100 relay (42.21), and a third-place finish in the long jump (21-06.75). "Cavs Compete at Slippery Rock"

Walsh traveled to Slippery Rock this past Saturday for the SRU Invitational. No team scores were recorded for the event. The men turned in three first place finishes. Kevin Surnear (Jr., Fairless, OH/HS) won the hammer throw with a heave of 161'4". George Theodoris (Jr., Fort Meyers, FL/HS) was tops in the triple jump with a distance of 46'7.25" and Gary Robinson (So., Tallmadge, OH/HS) won the 400m with a time of 50.56. Walsh travels to Houghton College this Saturday for the American Mideast Conference Championships.

"Theodoris Qualifies for NAIA Championships and Sets School Record"

The men traveled to the Mount Union Invitational this past Saturday. No team scores were recorded but the Cavs performed very well. Junior George Theodoris (Fort Meyers, FL/HS) cleared 47"6. 5' in the men's triple jump to win the event, set a new school record, and automatically qualify for the NAIA National Track & Field Championships in May. Theodoris broke his own record of 45"9' that he set as a freshman in 2000. He also took second in the 400m with a time of 49.84. Other first place finishes for the men were from Kevin Surnear (Jr., Fairless, OH/HS) and the 4 x 100m relay team consisting of Sean Miner (Jr., Creston, OH/Norwayne HS), T.J. McMichael (Jr., Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph HS), Ryan Kumpf (Fr., Massillon, OH/Jackson HS), and Jeff Ellerhorst (So., Garrettsville, OH/Garfield HS). Surnear won the hammer throw with a heave of 161"10' and the relay team was tops after finishing in 43.20. Freshmen Jeremy Roush (Massillon, OH/Jackson HS) and Joel Dagenhardt (Marlington, OH/HS) also performed well for the Cavs. Roush finished third in the 110 high hurdles (15.44) and in the 400 intermediate hurdles (57.42). Dagenhardt took third in the steeplechase (9:58.00).

"Cavs (23-5) Finish Third at Case Western Invitational"

Walsh traveled to Case Western on Saturday for a snowy track meet. The Cavs finished in third place with 83 points behind John Carroll (188) and Case (149). Both the men's and women's teams travel to Mount Union this Saturday. The men's team turned in three first place finishes. TJ McMichael (So., Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph's HS) won the 100m dash in 11.18. Kevin Surnear (Jr., Fairless, OH/HS) was tops in the hammer after throwing 155'2". The Cavs 4x100m relay of McMichael, Sean Miner (Jr., Creston, OH/Norwayne HS), Ryan Kumpf (Fr., Massillon, OH/Jackson HS), and Jeff Ellerhorst (So., Garrettsville, OH/Garfield HS) also took first after crossing the finish line in 43.52.

"Cavs Finish Second at Wooster Invitational/ 4x100m Relay Sets Record"

The men placed second out of 15 teams at Wooster on Saturday. Walsh travels to Case Western Reserve this Saturday. Walsh's 4 x 100m relay team comprised of Sean Miner (Jr., Creston, OH/Norwayne HS), TJ McMichael (Jr., Cleveland Hts., OH/St. Joseph HS), Ryan Kumpf (Fr., Massillon, OH/Jackson HS), and George Theodoris (Jr., Fort Meyers, FL/HS) set a new school record and placed second in a time of 43.08. Theodoris also won the 400m in 49.88. McMichael finished second in the 100m dash (10.94) and third in the 200m (22.99) and the triple jump (40'3 1/4"). Freshman Jeremy Roush (Massillon, OH/Jackson HS) also took third in the high hurdles (15.55) and 400m intermediate hurdles (57.60).

"Men Third at Muskingum Invite"

The men performed well at the Muskingum Invitational, placing third with 95 points. They are at Wooster this Saturday. The Cavs took five, first place finishes. George Theodoris (Jr., Ft. Myers, FL/HS) won the 400m (50.17), the triple jump (42.3) and was part of Walsh's winning 4 x 400 relay team. Theodoris teamed with Sean Miner (Jr., Creston, OH/Norwayne HS), Kirt Lyons (Fr., Tippecanoe, OH/Indian Valley HS) Ryan Kumpf (Fr., Massillon, OH/Jackson HS) for a time of 3:31.59. TJ McMichael (Jr., Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph HS) won the 100m (11.56) and Kevin Surnear (So., Fairless, OH/HS).

"Cavs Return From South Carolina Spring Break Trip"

Both the men and women's teams traveled to Charleston, South Carolina for their spring trip where they competed at Charleston Southern's Buccaneer Invitational. Competing teams included Charleston, Charleston Southern, Citadel, Radford, Detroit, South Carolina, Claflin, Liberty, and Savannah State. Many of the Cavs fared well against these top NCAA teams. Veteran thrower Kevin Surnear (Jr., Fairless, OH/HS) placed the highest for the men. He took second in the hammer throw with a heave of 149'2". Joel Dagenhardt (Fr., Marlington, OH/HS) placed third in the 3000m steeplechase finishing in 10:25.50. George Theodoris (So., Fort Lauderdale, FL/HS) finished third in the triple jump after jumping 45'1" and also placed seventh in the 400m (49.26). Jeremy Roush (Fr., Massillon, OH/Jackson HS) was sixth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 58.15 and ninth in the 110m hurdles (16.31).

"Cavs Compete at NAIA Indoor National Track & Field Championships"

Eight members of the Cavalier men and women's track team traveled to Johnson, Tennessee for the NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships this past weekend. Gary Robinson (Fr., Tallmadge, OH/HS) turned in the highest finish for the Cavs. He placed seventh in the men's pentathlon with a total of 3,404 points. Bryan Clay from Azusa Pacific won the event (3,851 point). Kevin Surnear (So., Fairless, OH/HS) also turned in a fine performance. He finished eighth in the men's shot put with a heave of 51'2.25". This was his second appearance at the indoor tournament; he placed 20th last year. George Theodoris (So., Fort Meyers, FL/HS) finished eighth in the triple jump with a distance of 45'11.25". TJ McMichael (So., Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph HS) competed in the 55m dash and Jeremy Roush (Fr., Massillon, OH/Jackson HS) competed in the 55m high hurdles. Neither qualified for the semifinal round. McMichael turned in a time of 6.83 and Roush finished in 8.26.
