"Cavs Compete at NAIA Outdoor Championships/Klein Breaks School Record"

Junior Cara Klein (Akron, OH/Green) turned in the best finish for the women at the championships. She advanced to the semifinals of the 800m run after finishing in 2:17.72. In the semifinals she ran 2:17.05 but failed to qualify for the finals (9th place). Even though Klein did not advance to the finals, she set a new school record in the 800m, breaking the previous record set in 1998 by Patty Osbourne (2:17.11). Athena Culverhouse (So., East Canton, OH/HS) finished 20th in the 200m dash and Sheila Greller (So., Fairview park, OH/Magnificat) finished 20th in the hammer throw (130'2") and fouled out in the discus throw.

"Klein (top right) 9th in Heat, Fails to Advance"

Cara Klein (Jr., Akron, OH/Green) placed 9th (2:17:05) in her heat at the semifinals of the 800m at the NAIA Track Nationals Championships in Olathe, Kansas yesterday and failed to qualify for the finals. The top three in each heat, plus the best two times qualify for the finals. Klein finished second (2:17.72) in her respective heat on Thursday to advance to the semis.

"Cara Klein (top right) Advances to Semifinals in the 800m at NAIA Nationals"

Junior Cara Klein (Akron, OH/Green) has advanced to the semifinals in the 800m at the NAIA Track Nationals Championships in Olathe, Kansas. Klein finished second (2:17.72) in her respective heat and will compete today, with a chance to advance to the finals. Klein's time was her best to date, eclipsing her fastest time (2:17.84) registered last week at the Al Campbell Invitational at the University of Akron. Klein is the only Cavalier to advance.

Athena Culverhouse (So., East Canton, OH/HS) finished 6th (25.65) in the 200m and Sheila Greller (So., Fairview Park, OH/Magnificat) placed 7th in the hammer throw (130'2").

"Cara Klein Provisionally Qualifies for NAIA Championships at Al Campbell Invitational"

The Cavs traveled to the University of Akron this past Saturday for the Al Campbell Invitational. Junior Cara Klein (Akron, OH/Green) turned in her fastest time ever in the 800m (2:17.84), taking eighth place, and bettering her provisionally qualifying mark set last weekend at Baldwin Wallace. The time was also just shy of breaking the school record (2:17.11) set by Patty Osborne in 1998. Sara Piersante (Jr., Canfield, OH/HS) also had a fine weekend, winning the 5000m in 18:38.25. The Cavs 4x100m relay team consisting of Klein, Athena Culverhouse (So., East Canton, OH/HS), Jessica Scheeser (So., Green, OH/HS), and Kristen Boyne (So., Parma, OH/Padua Franciscan) turned in their best time of the year (50.15) to finish fourth. Walsh travels to BW this weekend for a non-conference meet.

"Cavs Compete at Baldwin Wallace"

Walsh traveled to Baldwin Wallace College this past Saturday for a non-scoring meet. The Cavs travel to the University of Akron for the Al Campbell Invitational this Saturday.

Sprinter standout Athena Culverhouse (So., East Canton, OH/HS) won the 200m dash in 25.03. When Culverhouse automatically qualified for the NAIA Championships last week, she was running 25.63 and ranked 28th in the country. Her new time moves her ranking up to 7th in the country. Cara Klein (Jr., Akron, OH/Green) won the 800m run and provisionally qualified for the NAIA's with a time of 2:18.33. Sheila Greller (So., Fairview Park, OH/Magnificat) won the discus with a heave of 130'9" and also took third in the shot put (36'4.5'"). The Cavs 4x100 relay team consisting of Culverhouse, Klein, Kristen Boyne (So., Parma, OH/Padua Franciscan), and Jessica Scheeser (So., Green, OH/HS) finished second in the event with a time of 50.61. Scheeser also finished third in the 100m hurdles (16.27) and Patricia Centric (Fr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) was third in the high jump (5').

"Cavs Place Fourth at AMC Championships/Culverhouse Earns Runner-up MVP Honors and Qualifies for NAIA Championships"

Walsh traveled to the University of Rio Grande this past Saturday for the American Mideast Conference Championships. The Cavs tied for fourth with Roberts Wesleyan College (96 points). Geneva College won the event (157). The Cavs travel to Baldwin Wallace College this Saturday and Sunday.

Athena Culverhouse (So., East Canton, OH/HS) earned runner-up MVP honors for her stellar performance at the event. She finished first in the 400m (59.07), 200m (25.63), and the 4x100m relay (50.19), and also took fourth place in the 4x400m relay (4:14.49). Her 200m time of 25.63 was also good enough to automatically qualify her for the NAIA National Championships May 22-24 in Olathe, Kansas. Other members of the 4x100m relay team include Kristen Boyne (So., Parma, OH/Padua Franciscan), Jessica Scheeser (So., Green, OH/HS), and Cara Klein (Jr., Akron, OH/Green). Scheeser, Klein, and Stacy Kirby (So., Rome, OH/Grand Valley) joined her on the 4x400m relay.

Overall, the Cavs performed well in the distance events. Cara Klein (LOWER RIGHT) finished second in the 800m (2:19.91) while Lisa Mielke (Fr., Sandusky, OH/St. Mary's) finished fourth in the 10,000m run (41:20.43) and Sara Piersante (Jr., Canfield, OH/HS) was fifth in the 5000m run (18:59.41). Andrea Elsasser (Jr., North Royalton, OH/Padua Franciscan) finished sixth in the 3000m steeplechase (12:47.57) breaking the school record in the event she set as a freshman. Walsh's 4x800m relay team of Piersante, Elsasser, Klein, and Clare LaCava (So., West Geauga, OH/HS) took third (9:57.70). In the field events Walsh was lead by Sheila Greller's (So., Fairview Park, OH/Magnificat) third place finish in the discus (123'8") and sixth place finish in the shot put (38'.5"). In the sprinting events, Stacy Kirby was fourth in the 400m hurdles (71.62) and Jessica Scheeser was sixth in the 100m hurdles (16.35).

"Cavs Compete at EKU Invite"

Walsh traveled to NCAA Division I Eastern Kentucky University this past weekend as a gear up for the AMC Championships to be held this Saturday at the University of Rio Grande.

Thrower Sheila Greller (So., Fairview Park, OH/Magnificat) had a great performance for the Cavs. She took third in the shot put (37'8.25") and fifth in the discus (36.28m). Cara Klein (Jr., Akron, OH/Green) also had a great showing for Walsh. She finished third in the 800m with a time of 2:20.87. The Cavs other top performer was Sara Piersante (Jr., Canfield, OH/HS). Piersante finished sixth in the 5000m run with a time of 19:00.90.

"Cavs 4x100m Relay Provisionally Qualifies for NAIA Championships at Mount Union Invite"

Walsh traveled to the 25-team Mount Union College Invitational this past Saturday. The Cavs 4x100m relay team comprised of Kristen Boyne (So., Parma, OH/Padua Fransiscan), Jessica Scheeser (So., Green, OH/HS), Cara Klein (Jr., Akron, OH/Green) and Athena Culverhouse (So., East Canton, OH/HS) didn't win the event (3rd) but finished in 49.12. The time provisionally qualifies the relay team for the NAIA Outdoor NAtional Championships to be held in Peach Tree, Georgia, May 12-16. Culverhouse also excelled in her individual events. She won the 200m dash in 25.99 and also finished second in the 400m (59.40). Klein also performed well in the 800m She was second after finishing in 2:19.60.

The Cavs travel to Grove City this Tuesday and then to NCAA DI Eastern Kentucky University this Saturday.

"Cavs Third at Stark County Championships"

Walsh traveled to Mount Union this past Saturday for the Stark County Championships. Walsh placed third with a total of 79 points. Malone won the event (142.5) and Mount Union was second (119). Walsh travels to the Mount Union Invitational this Saturday. Meet time is scheduled for 10 a.m.

The Cavs won three events. Sophomore standout thrower, Sheila Greller, (Fairview Park, OH/Magnificat) won the discus with a heave of 138'10". Freshman Patricia Centric (Canal Fulton, OH/Central Catholic) won her first collegiate event after clearing 4'10" in the high jump. Athena Culverhouse (So., East Canton, OH/HS) won the 400m in 59.98.


"Cavs Finish Fifth at Wooster Invite"

Walsh traveled to the College of Wooster Invite this past Saturday where they placed fifth out of 13 teams with a score of 80 points. Ashland won the event (114). The Cavs travel to Mount Union College this Saturday for a tri-meet with the purple raiders and Malone College.

Walsh turned in only one first place finish- the 4x100m relay. Athena Culverhouse (So., East Canton, OH/HS), Cara Klein (Jr., Akron, OH/Green), Jessica Scheeser (So., Green, OH/HS), and Kristen Boyne (So., Parma, OH/Padua Franciscan) crossed the finish line in 50.94 seconds to take the event. Culverhouse also placed second in the 100m dash (12.77) and third in the 200m dash (26.19). Klein was second in the 400m with a time of 60.55. National qualifier, Sheila Greller (So., Fairview Park, OH/Magnificat), finished second in both the hammer throw (132'2") and the discus (132'5").

"Greller (TOP RIGHT) Qualifies for NAIA Nationals"

The women's track team traveled to the Muskingum College Invitational this past weekend. Several Cavs turned in fine finishes including sophomore women's thrower, Sheila Greller (Fairview Park, OH/Magnificat). Greller who just recently returned from the NAIA Indoor National Championships, automatically qualified for the Outdoor Championships in the discus with a heave of 138'6". Greller who set the school record in the event (140'11") last year as a freshman, will be making her second trip to the NAIA Outdoor National Meet. She also took second place in the event.

The women were also lead by Athena Culverhouse (So., East Canton, OH/HS), Cara Klein (Jr., Akron, OH/Green), and Jessica Scheeser (So., Green, OH/HS). Culverhouse won the 200m in 26.93 and also took second in the 400m with a time of 62.09. Klein won the 800m in 2:24.79 while Scheeser finished second in the 100m hurdles with a time of 16.97.

"Cara Klein Earns All-American Honors at NAIA Indoor Track Championships"

Cara Klein (Green, OH/HS) (TOP RIGHT) earned All-American status and set a new school record (twice) in the women's 800m run. She finished tied for sixth with a time of 2:17.81. Her time improved on her school-record mark of 2:20.2 that she set in Friday's preliminaries.

Other Cavalier qualifiers included Athena Culverhouse (So., East Canton, OH/HS) in the women's 400m and Sheila Greller (So., Fairview Park, OH/Magnificat) in the women's weight throw. Greller was 22nd in the women's weight throw (44'4.75"). ~Results~

"Walsh Has a Dozen (Men & Women) Entered in NAIA National Indoor Track Championships"
While most of the Walsh University campus heads south for spring break the week of March 3rd, the Cavalier track team is sending its biggest contingent ever to East Tennessee University for the NAIA National Indoor Championships. The dozen athletes are entered in a variety of events and appear to be very competitive based upon the last NAIA national rankings.

The women will be lead by Junior Cara Klein who is ranked in the top ten in the 800-meter race. Klein also qualified in the 600-meter race but will concentrate on the 800 only. Sophomores Athena Culverhouse in the 400-meter race and Sheila Greller in the weight throw complete the women's entries. Greller and Klein both have national meet experience.

Competition begins on Thursday March 6th and concludes Saturday March 8th.

OBERLIN RESULTS

The Cavs were in action over the weekend at Oberlin College where the women boasted a host of outstanding performances. In the 400-meter dash, sophomore, Athena Culverhouse led the way placing 1st overall with a time of 1:01.24. Cara Klein dominated in the 800-meter dash with a 1st place finish of her own with a time of 2:21.66. Distance standout, Sara Piersante doubled up in distance events placing 2nd in the 1500m run with a time of 5:16.64 and 6th in the 3000m run with a time of 11:09.19. Also performing well were shot putters, Sheila Greller who placed 3rd and threw 36-00.75, Sara Richards with a throw of 35-07.25 earning her 4th place, and high jumper Patricia Centric with a leap clearing 4-11.75. As the women gear up for the outdoor season, national indoor qualifiers Athena Culverhouse, Cara Klein, and Sheila Greller will compete this week in the NAIA National Indoor Track & Field Championships in Tenessee on March 6th-8th.

"Cavs Compete at Kent Tune-up/Culverhouse and Greller Provisionally Qualify for NAIA Indoor Championships"

Walsh traveled to Kent State this past weekend for the Kent Tune-up. Sophomores Athena Culverhouse (East Canton, OH/HS) and Sheila Greller (Fairview Park, OH/Magnificat) both provisionally qualified for the NAIA Indoor Championships to be held March 6-8 in Johnsonville, TN. Culverhouse set school records in the 200m (26.80) and 400m (60.19) and provisionally qualified in each sport. Greller finished ninth and provisionally qualified for the championships in the weight throw with a heave of 44'3.25". The Cavs 4x400m relay team of Jessica Scheeser (So., Green, OH/HS), Sara Piersante (Jr., Canfield, OH/HS), Cara Klein (Jr., Green, OH/HS) and Culverhouse finished fifth in the 4x400m relay with a time of 4:17.61.

"Scheeser and Klein Shine at Findlay Open Meet"

The Lady Cavaliers were in action last Friday at the an Open Invitational at Findlay University. Leading the way for the Cavs were standouts, Cara Klein and Jessica Scheeser. Already a provisional qualifier in the 600m dash, Klein qualified automatically in the 800m dash with a time of 2:21.81. Klein took second overall in the event. Scheeser sprinted her way to a national qualifying spot in the 55m dash with an automatic qualifying time of 7.77.

Monday, February 3, 2003 - "Klein Qualifies For National Meet"

The Cavaliers were back in action this past weekend at the Alltel Classic at Findlay University where junior, Cara Klein qualified for the NAIA National Indoor Meet in the 600 meter run with a provisional time of 1:40.35. Klein also placed 7th in the 1,000-meters with a time of 3:13.22. see women's complete results

Klein joins sophomore teammate, Sheila Grellar who has also qualified for the national meet with a toss of 46'1/2 in the women's weight throw. The Cavs' next meet will be back at Findlay University on February 15th.


Tuesday, January 21, 2003 -

"Theodoris Qualifies For Indoor National Meet, Greller Sets Mark in Weight Throw"

George Theodoris (Sr., Ft. Myers, FL) and Sheila Greller (So., Fairview Park, OH) were standouts for the Cavs at the Kent State University Gala in December. Theodoris has qualified for the indoor NAIA National Championships in the triple jump (46-2) and is a provisional qualifier in the 200m (22.34). Greller is an indoor provisional qualifier in the weight throw and now owns the women's weight throw record with a heave of 46'1/2". She snapped the mark set by Tracey Grubb in 2000.

The Cavs' men also produced three other provisional qualifiers in Kevin Surnear (Jr., Fairless, OH/HS) in the 35 lb wt. (50'2"), Gary Robinson (Jr., Tallmadge, OH/HS) in the pentathlon (3,338 pts.) and high jump (6'63/4"), and T.J. McMichael (Sr., Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph) in the 60m (7.17).
