"Kevin Surnear Earns All-American Honors at NAIA Outdoor National Championships/Coach Dan McCallion Earns NAIA Region IX Coach of the Year Honors"
Seven members of Walsh University's men's track and field team competed at the NAIA Outdoor National Track and Field Championships this past week (May 22-24) in Olathe, Kansas. While there, Walsh's Head Men's Track and Field Coach, Dan McCallion, earned NAIA Region IX Coach of the Year honors. Honorees received the honor by a vote of the coaches attending the NAIA National Championships.
Senior Kevin Surnear (Navarre, OH/Fairless) earned NAIA All-American status for the third time in the men's shot put. Surnear, who is the 2003 Indoor Shot Put National Champion, finished fourth in the event outdoors with a heave of 51'10". He also finished 19th in the hammer throw (149'4"). Junior Derek Besgrove (Oregon, OH/Clay) competed in the 100m dash, 200m dash, and 4x100m relay. He advanced to the semifinals of the 200m, where he finished 10th (21.72) but failed to qualify for the finals. He finished 19th overall in the 100m dash (11.05). The Cavs relay team of Besgrove, Steve Moore (Fr., Massillon, OH/Jackson), TJ McMichael (Sr., Cleveland Hts., OH/VASJ), and Gary Robinson (Jr., Tallmadge, OH/HS) finished 14th (42.38). Moore also ran 15.78 in the 110m hurdles to finish 22nd overall and McMichael finished 20th in the 200m dash (23.11). Despite a nagging hamstring injury, George Theodoris (Sr., Fort Meyers, FL/HS) finished 21st in the 200m dash (23.60) and also competed in the triple jump but fouled out. John Soehnlen (Sr., Magnolia, OH/Sandy Valley) represented the Cavs in the marathon, finishing 18th (2:48:37.01).

"Kevin Surnear (top right) Earns All-American Honors in Shot Put"
Kevin Surnear (Sr., Navarre, OH/Fairless) has earned NAIA All-American status for the third time. Surnear, who garnered a national indoor championship in the shot put this past winter, earned NAIA All-American honors in the outdoor shot put at the NAIA Championships in Olathe, KS yesterday with a throw of 51'11".
Derek Besgrove (Jr., Oregon, OH/Clay) (top right) looks to advance in the 200m. The semifinals begin at 3:35 p.m this afternoon. Besgrove was fifth (21.84) in his heat on Thursday.

"Derek Besgrove (top right) Advances to Semifinals in the 200m at NAIA Nationals"
Junior Derek Besgrove (Oregon, OH/Clay) has reached the semifinals in the 200 meters at the NAIA Track National Championships in Olathe, Kansas. Besgrove was fifth (21.84) in his heat yesterday, and will compete on Saturday. He is the only Cavalier to advance.
George Theodoris (Sr., Fort Meyers, Fl/HS) finished 6th (23.60) and TJ McMichael (Sr., Cleveland Hts., OH/VASJ) 8th (23.11) in the 200m in their respective heats. Steve Moore (Fr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) was 6th (15.78) in the 110m hurdles and Kevin Surnear (Sr., Navarre, OH/Fairless) placed 6th in the hammer (149'4").
Walsh traveled to the University of Akron this past Saturday for the Al Campbell Invitational. Junior Derek Besgrove (Oregon, OH/Clay) automatically qualified for the NAIA National championships in the 200m dash and senior TJ McMichael (Cleveland Hts., OH/VASJ) provisionally qualified in the same event. Besgrove, who had provisionally qualified for the championships in the 200m at the American Mideast Conference Tournament, moved into automatic qualification status after coming in second in the event with a time of 21.54. McMichael turned in his best time of the year (21.87) in the 200m finishing fifth. Besgrove also took second in the 100m dash (10.88) and McMichael finished third (10.98). The Cavs 4x100m relay team of Besgrove, McMichael, Steve Moore (Fr., Massillon, OH/Jackson), and Gary Robinson (Jr., Tallmadge, OH/HS) finished third (42.12). Moore also took sixth in the 110 hurdles (15.86) and Robinson was fourth in the long jump (22'1 1/2"). Kevin Surnear (Sr., Navarre, OH/Fairless) finished fifth in the shot put (51'6 1/4"). Walsh travels to Baldwin Wallace this weekend for a non-conference meet on Saturday.

"Cavs Compete at Slippery Rock and Baldwin Wallace"
Walsh traveled to Slippery Rock University this past Wednesday for a qualifying meet and was also at Baldwin Wallace College on Saturday. Both meets were non-scoring. This weekend the Cavs travel to the University of Akron for the Al Campbell Invitational.
Stephen Moore (Fr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) provisionally qualified in the 110 hurdles at Slippery Rock. He finished in 15.20. The provisional standard for the NAIA National Championships is 15.25. At BW, Derek Besgrove (Jr., Oregon, OH/Clay) won the 200m dash in 21.77. Paul Vincent (So., Garrettsville, OH/Garfield) won the 5000m run in 15:48.

"Cavs Win AMC Championships/Besgrove Earns Outstanding Male Performer Honors and Qualifies For NAIA Championships"
For the first time in Coach Dan McCallion's 26 years of coaching, he has lead Walsh to claim its first track and field conference championship. Walsh scored 171 points to take first place in the event. Malone was second (137) and Tiffin was third (117). McCallion was also honored with the title of "Coach of the Year" for the AMC. Walsh travels to Baldwin Wallace College this Saturday and Sunday.
Junior Derek Besgrove (Oregon, OH/Clay) was voted the Outstanding Male Performer of the Meet this past weekend. Besgrove was an integral member of the 4x100m relay that won their event (43.08), plus he also took first in the 200m (21.71) second in the 100m (10.86), and also placed seventh in the 4x400m relay (3:36.50). Besgrove's 10.86 finish in the 100m also automatically qualified him for the NAIA Championships that will be held May 22-24 in Olathe, Kansas. Other members of the winning 4x100m relay team include George Theodoris (Sr., Fort Meyers, Fl/HS), TJ McMichael (Sr., Cleveland Hts., OH/VASJ), and Stephen Moore (Fr., Massillon, OH/Jackson).
Theodoris also won the long jump (22'7") and took fifth in the triple jump (45'3"). McMichael finished third in the 100m (10.99), fourth in the 200m, and eighth in the triple jump (41'5.5"). Moore was third in the 110 hurdles (15.60), fifth in the high jump (6'), and sixth in the long jump (20'3"). Other top performers for the Cavs were Gary Robinson (Jr., Tallmadge, OH/HS), Kevin Surnear (Sr., Navarre, OH/Fairless), Jeremy Roush (So., Massillon, OH/HS), and Chris Calderon (So., Strasburg, OH/HS). Robinson took second in both the high jump (6'4") and 400m (50.98) and was also third in the long jump (22'3"). Surnear won the shot put (52'5.5"), was second in the hammer (157'4"), and also finished fifth in the discus (129'6"). Roush was second in the 400m intermediate hurdles (56.92) and Calderon was third in the discus (132'11").

"Cavs Compete at Eastern Kentucky University/4x100m Relay Sets School Record and Qualifies for NAIA Championships"
Walsh traveled to Eastern Kentucky University this past weekend for a NCAA Division I meet. The Cavs 4x100m relay had an excellent showing breaking a school record and also automatically qualifying for the NAIA Outdoor Championships to be held May 22-24, 2003, in Olathe, Kansas. Steve Moore (Fr., Massillon, OH/Jackson), TJ McMichael (Sr., Cleveland Hts., OH/VASJ), Derek Besgrove (Jr., Oregon, OH/Clay), and George Theodoris (Sr., Fort Meyers, FL/HS) took third place in the relay with a time of 42.00. The time beat the school record set by Theodoris, McMichael, Sean Miner, and Ryan Kumpf last year. The time was also good enough to send the team to the NAIA Championships at the end of this May.
Other top finishes for the Cavs included Moore's sixth place finish in the 110m hurdles (15.64). Kevin Surnear (Sr., Navarre, OH/Fairless) took second in the shot put (50'2.5") and fifth in the discus. Anthony Rich (Fr., Canton, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) finished third in the pole vault (11'0"), Joel Dagenhardt (So., Marlington, OH/HS) was fourth in the 3000m steeplechase (10:13.20) and Paul Vincent (So., Garrettsville, OH/Garfield) was sixth in the 1500m run (4:04.99).
The Cavs travel to the University of Rio Grande for the AMC Championships this Saturday.

"Cavs Compete at Mount Union Invite, Theodoris Qualifies for NAIA Championships"
The Cavs traveled to the Mount Union College Invitational this past Saturday. Twenty five teams competed at the event. Walsh travels to Grove City College this Tuesday for a quad meet and will be at NCAA DI Eastern Kentucky University this Saturday.
Senior George Theodoris (Fort Meyers, FL/HS) won the 200m dash and also automatically qualified for the NAIA Outdoor Championships that will be held May 12-16 in Peach Tree, Georgia. He won the sprint in 21.58. Kevin Surnear (Sr., Navarre, OH/Fairless) won the hammer throw with a heave of 164' and also took second place in the shot put after throwing 51'6". Other top finishers for the Cavs included TJ McMichael's (Sr., Cleveland Hts., OH/VASJ) third place finish in in the 100m dash (10.99) and Paul Vincent's (So., Garrettsville, OH/Garfield) third place finish in the 5000m run (16:01.10).

"Cavs Win Stark County Championships"
Walsh traveled to Mount Union College this past Saturday for the Stark County Championships, which included Mount Union, Malone, and Walsh. The Cavs scored 133 points to take first. Mount Union finished second (118) and Malone was third (101).
The Cavs turned in eight first place finishes. Senior standout, George Theodoris (Fort Meyers, FL/HS) won five separate events. He was tops in both the 200m (22.38), 400m (50.61) and was also an integral member of the 4x100m relay team that finished in 43:32. Other members of the relay team included Steve Moore (Fr., Massillon, OH/Jackson), TJ McMichael (Sr., Cleveland Hts., OH/VASJ), and Sean Miner (Sr., Cres, OH/Norwayne). Theodoris also won both the triple jump (22') and the long jump (46'7"). Sophomore Jeremy Roush (Massillon, OH/Jackson) won the 400 hurdles (57.97). Kevin Surnear (Sr., Navarre, OH/Fairless) won the hammer throw (166'6") and Gary Robinson (Jr., Tallmadge, OH/HS) won the high jump (46'7").
The Cavs travel to the Mount Union Invitational this Saturday. Meet time is scheduled for 10 a.m.

"Cavs Finish Second at Wooster Invite/Surnear Breaks School Record and Qualifies for NAIA National Meet"
Walsh traveled to the College of Wooster Invite this past weekend where they finished second out of 13 teams with a team score of 92. Ashland won the event with a score of 150.5. This Saturday Walsh travels to Mount Union College for tri-meet with Mount Union and Malone College.
NAIA Indoor National Shot Put champion, Kevin Surnear (Sr., Navarre, OH/Fairless) won the hammer throw with a heave of 177'11". The distance broke the school record of 173'4" set by Ron Milligan in 1994. In addition to his record breaking performance, Surnear also qualified for a return trip to the NAIA National Outdoor Track & Field Championships which will be held May 22-24 in Olathe, Kansas.
The Cavs also turned in three other first place finishes. Derek Besgrove (Jr., Oregon, OH/Clay) won both the 100m (11.16) dash and the 200m dash (22.43). Walsh's 4x100m relay team also took first place. TJ McMichael (Sr., Cleveland, OH/VASJ), Gary Robinson (Jr., Tallmadge, OH/HS), George Theodoris (Sr., Fort Meyers, FL/HS) and Besgrove finished in 42.76.

"Cavs Open Outdoor Season"
The men's track team traveled to the Muskingum College Invitational this past weekend. The men excelled in the first meet of the outdoor season. Both the 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams paved the way for the Cavs. The 4x100m team consisting of George Theodoris (Sr., Fort Meyers, FL/HS), Derek Besgrove (Jr., Oregon, OH/Clay), TJ McMichael (Sr., Cleveland Hts., OH/VASJ), and Gary Robinson (Jr., Tallmadge, OH/HS) won the relay in 43.06. The 4x400m team of Theodoris, Besgrove, Robinson, and Kirt Lyon (Tippecanoe, OH/Indian Valley) also finished first (3:22.42). Individually, Theodoris won the 200m in 22.62 while McMichael took second in the event (23.25). Robinson cleared 20'11.25" to take second place in the long jump and Kevin Surnear (Sr., Navarre, OH/Fairless) finished second in the shot put with a heave of 49'6.50".
The Cavs travel to the College of Wooster this Saturday for the Wooster Invitational.

"Cavs Earn All-American Honors at NAIA Indoor Track Championships/Kevin Surnear National Shot Put Champion"
Walsh University track and field athletes competed in the NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships this past Thursday through Saturday, in Johnson City, Tennessee. Walsh's men's team finished tied for 18th with Westmont College, while the women's team tied for 40th with Sioux Falls. Senior Kevin Surnear (Sr., Navarre, OH/Fairless) (TOP RIGHT) entered the national tournament ranked first in the nation in the shot put. He proved his ranking by winning the national title in the event along with earning All-American honors and setting a new school record with a heave of 54'3.25". He is the first individual national champion in school history. This was Surnear's fourth trip to the NAIA Indoor Championships. He also finished 15th in the weight throw.
Juniors Gary Robinson (Tallmadge, OH/HS) (BOTTOM RIGHT) also earned All-American honors. Robinson won the last two events of the men's pentathlon to take fourth place and earn All-American honors for the first time in his career. He finished the event just two points shy (3440) of the third place finisher, Dickinson State's Aaron Johansen (3442). Robinson also finished tied for ninth in the high jump (6'4.75").
Other Cavalier qualifiers included Steve Moore (Fr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) in the men's 55m hurdles, George Theodoris (Sr., Fort Meyers, FL/HS) in the 4x400m relay, 200m, and triple jump, Derek Besgrove (Jr., Oregon, OH/Clay) in the men's 200m and 4x400m relay, Kirt Lyon (So., Indian Valley, OH/Tippecanoe) in the 4x400m relay, and Steve Mackle (Fr., Malvern, OH/HS) in the 4x400m relay. Theodoris finished 10th in the men's triple jump after clearing 45'7.75".

"Walsh Has a Dozen Entered in NAIA National Indoor Track
While most of the Walsh University campus heads south for spring break the week of March 3rd, the Cavalier track team is sending its biggest contingent ever to East Tennessee University for the NAIA National Indoor Championships. The dozen athletes are entered in a variety of events and appear to be very competitive based upon the last NAIA national rankings.
For the men, Senior Kevin Surnear appears to be peaking at the right time. He leads the nation in the shot put heading into the national meet. He is also entered in the weight throw for the second year. Junior Gary Robinson is ranked in the top four in both the pentathlon and in the high jump. Senior George Theodoris in ranked in the top 10 in both the 200 meters and triple jump. All three finished in the top eight last year and are expected to move up at least several places.
Making their first trip to the national meet will be
freshman Steve Moore in the hurdles and junior Derrick Besgrove in
the 200-meter race. The men have also qualified in the 1600 meter
relay, but they will be running with some alternates do to injury
and Robinson's entry in the pentathlon. Running the relay for the
Cavs are Theodoris, Besgrove, sophomore Kirt Lyons, and freshman
Steve Mackle. TJ McMichael will serve as an alternate in the relay
even though he qualified provisionally in the 55-meter dash.
The women will be lead by Junior Cara Klein who is ranked in the top ten in the 800-meter race. Klein also qualified in the 600-meter race but will concentrate on the 800 only. Sophomores Athena Culverhouse in the 400-meter race and Sheila Greller in the weight throw complete the women's entries. Greller and Klein both have national meet experience.
Competition begins on Thursday March 6th and concludes Saturday March 8th.

Walsh was in action last weekend at Oberlin College. Leading the way for the men was Derek Besgrove who placed 1st in both the 55-meter dash (6.72) and the 200-meter dash (23.01). Veteran Gary Robinson helped lead the way as well placing 1st in both the high jump (6-06) and the long jump (20-05.25). Senior, George Theodoris also took 1st in the triple jump with a leap of 45-02.25. Freshmen, Steve Moore and sophomore, Jeremy Roush led the way in the 55-meter hurdles. Moore finished 1st in 8.03 and Roush placed 3rd in a time of 8.68.
In the throwing events, Kevin Surnear and Chris Calderon took 1st and 2nd in the shot put. Surnear threw 52-00.50 and Calderon had a toss of 45-10.75. Distance standout Paul Vincent placed 3rd in the 1500m with a time of 4:13.12. Both Walsh's 4x200m (1:32.70) and 4x400m ( 3:30.64) relay teams placed 1st. "Cavs Compete at Kent State Tune-up/School Records Shattered in Three Events"
Walsh traveled to the Kent State Tune-Up this past weekend. School records were broken in three separate events. George Theodoris (Sr., Fort Myers, FL/HS) broke the school record in the 200m (22.13) and was part of the 4x400m relay team that set a new record (3:23.64). Other relay members include Kirt Lyons (So., Indian Valley, OH/Tippecanoe), Derek Besgrove (Jr., Oregon, OH/Clay) and Gary Robinson (Jr., Tallmadge, OH/HS). Kevin Surnear (Sr., Navarre, OH/Fairless) also set a new record in the weight throw (53'4.5").

"Men's Track Moving Ahead Toward National Indoor Meet"
The Cavs were in action last Friday at an Open Invitational at Findlay University. The men faired well at the meet with Seniors George Theodoris and Kevin Surnear once again leading the way for the Cavs. Theodoris placed second in the 400m dash with a time of 51.11. Surnear placed second in the shot put with a heavy of 51-07.25 and took 6th in the 35lb weight throw with a toss of 50-09.50.
Junior, Gary Robinson, had a field day placing second in the high jump (6' 8".75), fifth in the long jump (21-07.50), and first in the pentathlon with yet another record-breaking tally of 3,508 points. Robinson's high jump is an automatic qualifying leap and he is currently ranked, 4th nationally in the event.
Kurt Lyon, Steve Mackle, and Paul Vincent were the top performers for the men's mid-distance and distance crew. Lyon placed fourth in the 600m dash with a time of 1:25.47 and Mackle placed sixth ion the 800m with a time of 2:02.83. Paul Vincent placed sixth in the mile with a time of 4:35.10.
The Cavs' next meet will be at Kent State University on Saturday, February 22nd.
Monday, February 3, 2003 - "Moore Hurdles His Way to National Meet, Robinson Breaks Records at Findlay"
The Cavaliers produced yet another indoor qualifier for the NAIA National Indoor Championships. Steve Moore qualified in the 60-meter high hurdles at the Slippery Rock Invitational on January 25th with a time of 8.23.
The Cavs were in action this past weekend at the Findlay University Alltel Classic where seniors George Theodoris and Kevin Surnear were the high men for the Cavs. Theodoris placed 3rd in the triple jump with a mark of 44'9" and Surnear took 2nd in the men's shot put with a heave of 51'.
Robinson sets records - Pentathlete, Gary Robinson (Jr.) broke two of Walsh's school records at the Alltel Classic in the high jump and Pentathlon. Robinson cleared 6 feet, 81/4 inches in the high jump which also automatically qualifies him for the NAIA National Championships. Finishing 7th overall in the Pentathlon, Robinson broke yet another school record scoring 3,425 points thus improving over his previous tally of 3,338. see men's complete results
The Cavs' next meet will be back at Findlay University on February 15th.
Tuesday, January 21, 2003 - "Theodoris Qualifies For Indoor National Meet, Greller Sets Mark in Weight Throw"
George Theodoris (Sr., Ft. Myers, FL) and Sheila Greller (So., Fairview Park, OH) were standouts for the Cavs at the Kent State University Gala in December. Theodoris qualified for the indoor NAIA National Championships in the triple jump (46-2) and is a provisional qualifier in the 200m (22.34). Greller is an indoor provisional qualifier in the weight throw and now owns the women's weight throw record with a heave of 46'1/2". She snapped the mark set by Tracey Grubb in 2000.
The Cavs' men also produced three other provisional qualifiers in Kevin Surnear (Jr., Fairless, OH/HS) in the 35 lb wt. (50'2"), Gary Robinson (Jr., Tallmadge, OH/HS) in the pentathlon (3,338 pts.) and high jump (6'63/4"), and T.J. McMichael (Sr., Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph) in the 60m (7.17).
