"Walsh University Signs Lexington's Stephen Webster"

Walsh University Head Men's Tennis Coach Sherry Bossart has announced the signing of Stephen Webster, who will enroll at the University for the 2004 fall semester to continue his education and participate in intercollegiate athletics for the Cavaliers.

Webster played at Lexington High School, where he won four letters playing singles and doubles. Webster fashioned a 28-4 mark at second singles as a senior and 25-3 mark as a junior. Lexington won the state championship this past season.

"Aaron Violand Named Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athlete/Chris Pleska, Lanny Rubin and Dan Schuler Named First Team All-AMC South"

Walsh's Aaron Violand (Sr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) has been selected to the Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athlete team. Violand, a business major, sported a 3.63 grade point average this past spring and has a 3.78 overall GPA.

The Cavs placed three players on the American Mideast Conference's All-South Division team. Chris Pleska (Jr., Wooster, OH/HS), Lanny Rubin (Fr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) and Dan Schuler (Sr., Navarre, OH/Perry) were named first team singles. Rubin and Schuler were also named to the doubles team. Pleska finished 14-9 playing third and fourth singles. Rubin finished 13-8 overall and 8-2 at first singles. Schuler led the Cavs with 16 wins at second singles and finished the season 16-6. The two-some compiled a 13-3 doubles mark at second doubles.

"Cavs Fall 8-1 To Oklahoma Christian at National Tournament"

Walsh (8-14) fell 8-1 to Oklahoma Christian (12-4) in the first round of the NAIA National Tournament. The loss eliminates the Cavs. Aaron Violand (Sr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) and Felix Vargas (Jr., Caracas, VZ/Iea) posted the Cavs only win (8-6) at third doubles.

Cavs Meet Oklahoma Christian in NAIA Tourney Opener

Walsh (8-13) meets the NAIA 8th ranked Oklahoma Christian University Eagles (11-4) at 1 p.m., on Monday, at the NAIA National Tournament in Mobile, Alabama. The Eagles received an at-large berth after finishing second in Region VI. They were defeated 7-0 by NAIA 6th ranked College of Sante Fe (N.M.) in the Region VI title match. Walsh reached the national tournament after winning their 8th straight regional championship last week.

The Cavs lost to Vanguard University 6-2 in the opening round last year. Walsh takes a seven-match win streak to nationals.

Cavs Alabama Bound

The Walsh University Men's Tennis Team (8-13) is Alabama bound after sweeping through the NAIA Regional Tournament last week. The Cavs defeated Seton Hill (9-0), Roberts Wesleyan (9-0) and Cedarville (8-1) to win their eighth straight regional title. Walsh will make its eighth straight NAIA Championship appearance in Mobile, Alabama, May 17-21. The Cavs lost to Vanguard 6-2 in the opening round last year. They will take a seven-match win streak to nationals. Walsh has only lost one set during the win streak.

Lanny Rubin (Fr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) is 7-0 at first singles since taking over for Joel Carney, who was declared ineligible. He carries a seven-match win into nationals and is 13-7 overall and 8-1 at first singles. Dan Schuler (Sr., Navarre, OH/Perry) leads the team with 16 wins and is 16-5 on the season. Schuler plays second singles. Aaron Violand (Sr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) and Chris Pleska (Jr., Wooster, OH/HS) will handle the third and fourth singles posistion. Violand is 6-1 and Pleska is 14-8 and has won his last eight matches. Martin Echague (So., Buenos Aires, Argentina/Eccleston) is 12-9 at fifth singles and has won his last seven matches. Felix Vargas (Jr., Caracas, VZ/Iea) is 10-8 at sixth singles and has a four-match win streak. Echague and Pleska will play number one doubles. They are 6-1, with their only loss coming to Cedarville in the regional championship. Rubin and Schuler will play number two doubles and have a 13-2 record and have won nine straight matches. Violand and Vargas will play third singles. They have a 4-1 record.

Cavs Win NAIA Region IX Men's Tennis Championship With 8-1 Win Over Cedarville University

Walsh (8-13) defeated Cedarville University (18-4) 8-1 to win the NAIA Region IX championship at the Hall of Fame Courts today. Walsh will now make its eighth consecutive NAIA National Tournament appearance, when they head to Mobile, Alabama, May 17-21. The Cavs will take a seven-match win streak to Mobile.

Cavs Advance to Finals After Blanking Roberts Wesleyan

Walsh (7-13) defeated Roberts Wesleyan College 9-0 today to advance to the NAIA Region IX championship match. Walsh plays the winner of the Malone/Cedarville match at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Harvard Courts. The winner advances to the NAIA National Championships in Mobile, Alabama May 17-21.

Cavs Blank Seton Hill 9-0 in NAIA Playoff Opener

Walsh (6-13) defeated Seton Hill College 9-0 in their NAIA Region IX playoff off opener at Stadium Courts in Canton, OH. The win was the fifth straight for the Cavs. Walsh, the second seed in the American Mideast Conference South Division, will play Roberts Wesleyan College (7-4) at 1 p.m. at Stadium Courts tomorrow. Roberts Wesleyan is the top seed in the AMC North.

Cavs (5-13, 2-2) Take Four Match Win Streak into Tournament

Walsh (5-13, 2-2) takes a four-match win streak into this week's NAIA Region lX Tournament. The defending champion Cavs are the second seed in the American Mideast Conference South second seed and will play AMC North third seed Seton Hill at Stadium Park Courts on Wednesday at 1 p.m. The winner meets AMC North to seed Roberts Wesleyan at 1 p.m. on Stadium Courts on Thursday. The championship match is at Stadium Courts on Friday at 1 p.m.

Last week, Walsh forfeited six matches after the NAIA ruled that Joel Carney (Sr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) was ineligible. Walsh forfeited matches to Mount Union College, Slippery Rock, Ohio Dominican University, College of Wooster, Case Western Reserve University and Cedarville University.

Walsh defeated Malone, Saint Vincent and Penn State Behrend by identical 9-0 scores last week.

Cavs Forfeit Six Matches, Carney Declared Ineligible

Walsh (4-13, 2-2) has been forced to forfeit six matches after the NAIA ruled that Joel Carney (Sr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) was ineligible. Walsh has forfeited matches to Mount Union College, Slippery Rock, Ohio Dominican University, College of Wooster, Case Western Reserve University and Cedarville University.

Walsh won 9-0 today at Saint Vincent College.

Walsh (9-7, 4-0) blanked Malone 9-0 yesterday. Lanny Rubin (Fr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) won 6-2, 6-3 at first singles. Cavs (8-7, 3-0) Blank Tiffin/Meet Malone on Monday

Walsh (8-7, 3-0) blanked Tiffin 9-0 in its only match last week. The Cavs host Malone on Monday and play at the Mercyhurst Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.

Cavs (7-7, 1-0) Down Cedarville

Walsh went 2-1 on the court last week. The Cavs defeated Case Western Resevre University 4-3 and downed Cedarville Universitiy 6-3 in their first American Mideast Conference match. Walsh lost 4-3 at Cleveland State University on Sunday. The Cavs play at Tiffin (AMC) on Sunday (25th).

In Walsh's AMC win over Cedarville (6-3), the Cavs dominated singles play. Joel Carney (Sr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) won at first singles, Lanny Rubin (Fr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) at second singles and Dan Schuler (Sr., Navarre, OH/Perry) at third singles. Martin Echague (So., Buenos Aires, Argentina/Eccleston) and Felix Vargas (Jr., Caracas, VZ/Iea) also posted singles wins. Carney and Chris Pleska (Jr., Wooster, OH/HS) won at first doubles.

Cavs (5-6) Split Matches, Carney Suffers First Singles Loss

Walsh split matches last week and stand 5-6 on the season. The Cavs downed Wooster, but were defeated by Indiana Wesleyan. The scheduled match at Carnegie-Mellon was cancelled. This week, Walsh is at Case Western Reserve on Wednesday, home to Cedarville University at Canton City Courts on Friday and at Cleveland State University on Sunday.

The Cavs captured four singles and two doubles wins in the 6-3 win against Wooster. Joel Carney (Sr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) top right won for the eighth time without a loss at first singles, posting a 6-1, 6-1 triumph. Lanny Rubin (Fr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) won 6-0, 6-2 at second singles, Dan Schuler (Sr., Navarre, OH/Perry) won 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 at third singles and Chris Pleska (Jr., Wooster, OH/HS) bottom right won 6-0, 6-4 at fourth singles. Carney and Pleska won 8-6 at first doubles and Schuler and Rubin won 8-2 at second doubles.

Joel Carney and Chris Pleska posted the Cavs only win in their 1-8 loss at the hands of Indiana Wesleyan. The twosome won 9-7 at first doubles. Carney suffered his first singles loss (2-6, 4-6) to fall to 8-1.

Cavs Win Third Straight, Down Wooster 6-3

Walsh won its third straight match, defeating the College of Wooster 6-3 yesterday. The victory evened the Cavs record at 5-5. Walsh's match at Carnegie-Mellon for today has been postponed. Walsh will host Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday at 12 p.m. If their is rain, the match will be moved to the Hall of Fame Courts.

The Cavs captured four singles and two doubles wins against the Scots. Joel Carney (Sr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) won for the eighth time without a loss at first singles, posting a 6-1, 6-1 trimuph. Lanny Rubin (Fr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) won 6-0, 6-2 at second singles to improve to 5-5. Dan Schuler (Sr., Navarre, OH/Perry) top right won 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 at third singles to improve to 6-3 and Chris Pleska (Jr., Wooster, OH/HS) bottom right won 6-0, 6-4 at fourth singles to improve to 6-4. Carney and Pleska won 8-6 at first doubles and Schuler and Rubin won 8-2 at second doubles.

Cavs (4-5) Blank Slippery Rock and Ohio Dominican

Walsh improved to 4-5 on the season, after winning matches against Slippery Rock and Ohio Dominican last week. The Cavs won both matches by 9-0 counts and stand 1-0 in the American Mideast Conference after the Ohio Dominican win. This week, the Cavs host Wooster on Wednesday and play at Carnegie-Mellon on Thursday.

Walsh opened the week by blanking Slippery Rock University 9-0 on Monday. Joel Carney (Sr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) top right, Lanny Rubin (Fr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) bottom right and Dan Schuler (Sr., Navarre, OH/Perry) all won by 6-0, 6-0 scores. Carney and Chris Pleska (Jr., Wooster, OH/HS) won 8-5 at first doubles. Pleska also won 6-0, 6-1 at fourth singles. Martin Echague (So., Buenos Aires, Argentina/Eccleston) won 6-4, 6-0 at fifth singles and Kevin Clinesmith (Sr., Wooster, OH/HS) posted a 6-0, 6-1 win at sixth singles. Cavs Blank Ohio Dominican

Walsh improved to 4-5 overall and to 1-0 in the American Mideast Conference, after shutting out Ohio Dominican University 9-0 today. The win was the third straight for the Cavs.

Joel Carney (Sr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) won 6-0, 6-0 first singles, as the Cavs did not lose a game in singles play. Lanny Rubin (Fr.,Canton, OH/Central Catholic), Dan Schuler (Sr., Navarre, OH/Perry), Chris Pleska (Jr., Wooster, OH/HS), Felix Vargas (Jr., Caracas, VZ/Iea) and Martin Echague (So., Buenos Aires, Argentina/Eccleston) all won by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores. Walsh improved to 3-5 on the season, after blanking Slippery Rock University 9-0 yesterday. Carney and Chris Pleska (Jr., Wooster, OH/HS) won 8-5 at first doubles. Pleska also won 6-0, 6-1 at fourth singles. Martin Echague (So., Buenos Aires, Argentina/Eccleston) won 6-4, 6-0 at fifth singles and Kevin Clinesmith (Sr., Wooster, OH/HS) posted a 6-0, 6-1 win at sixth singles. Cavs Matches Cancelled Last Week, Resume Play Today

The Cavs (2-5) matches against Indiana Wesleyan University and West Liberty State College were cancelled last week. They resume play today at Slippery Rock University. Match time is set for 2:30 p.m. This Saturday they open American Mideast Conference play when they host Ohio Dominican University at 11 a.m.

Cavs (2-5) Split Matches, Carney Back

Walsh snapped a three match losing streak after defeating the University of Findlay last Wednesday. Walsh then fell to 2-5, after losing to Aquinas College on Friday at the Hall of Fame Courts. Walsh travels to West Liberty State College this Wednesday for a 3 p.m. match and will host Indiana Wesleyan University on Friday at the Hall of Fame Courts at 7 p.m.

The Cavs blanked Findlay 9-0 on the Oiler's home courts and did so without the services of their top singles player, Joel Carney (Sr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic), who was nursing a back injury. Freshman Lanny Rubin (Canton, OH/Central Catholic) stepped up into first singles to win by identical 6-2 scores. Dan Schuler (Sr., Navarre, OH/Perry) posted a 6-2, 6-1 win at second singles. At third singles, Chris Pleska (Jr., Wooster, OH/HS) blanked his opponent 6-0, 6-0. Martin Echague (So., Buenos Aires, Argentina/Eccleston) won 6-0, 6-4 at fourth singles, while Felix Vargas (Jr., Caracas, Venezuela/Iea) won 6-1, 6-0 at fifth singles and Kevin Clinesmith (Sr., Wooster, OH/HS) won 6-1, 6-1 at the sixth singles position. Rubin teamed with Aaron Violand (Sr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) to defeat the Oiler?s top doubles team 8-0 at first doubles. Schuler and Vargas posted an 8-6 win at second doubles and Andy Coutts (Fr., New Philadelphia, OH/HS) and Nick Graham (Fr., Canton, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) won 8-4 at third doubles.

The Cavs could only squeak out two wins in their 2-7 loss to Aquinas. Carney made his return to first singles and won his fifth straight match defeating Jason Winegar 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. He is undefeated (5-0) at first singles. The Cavs other win came from Carney and Chris Pleska at first doubles. The duo won 8-4 in their first match of the season together.

Cavs Halt Skid, Blank Findlay 9-0

Walsh snapped a three match losing streak, with a 9-0 win at the University of Findlay yesterday. The win improves the Cavs to 2-4. The Cavs halted their skid without the services of number one singles player Joel Carney (Sr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) top right, who is nursing a back injury. Freshman Lanny Rubin (Canton, OH/Central Catholic) bottom right won 6-2, 6-2 at first singles to improve to 2-4. Rubin combined with Aaron Violand (Sr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) to win 8-0 at first doubles. Dan Schuler (Sr., Navarre, OH/Perry) posted a 6-2, 6-1 at second singles. Cavs (1-4) Lose Fourth Straight Match

Walsh traveled to Oberlin College last Saturday to play a non-conference match with the Yeomen and were defeated 3-6. They have lost their last four matches. This week, the Cavs are at Findlay on March 17th and home to Aquinas College (Hall of Fame Courts) on March 19th at 7 p.m.

The day started off well with two wins in doubles action at Oberlin. Joel Carney (Sr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) and Lanny Rubin (Fr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) teamed up to win 8-2 at first doubles to stand at 3-2 on the year. Chris Pleska (Jr., Wooster, OH/HS) and Aaron Violand (Sr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) recorded their first win together at second doubles. They won 8-4 and are 1-0 overall. The Cavs were a bit shaky in singles play due to Joel Carney?s back injury in his doubles match. Carney, who plays first singles, is the only Cavalier to have not yet lost a match (4-0). Due to his injury, the line-up was rearranged at the last minute. Chris Pleska pulled out the Cavs only singles win, winning 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 at third singles.

Cavs (1-3) Drop Three of First Four Matches

The Cavs, who received votes in the first NAIA national ranking of the season, dropped their only two matches (Lee University, and Shorter College), while on spring break in Rome, GA last week. Walsh has now lost their last three matches. The Cavs are back in action on March 13, when they travel Oberlin College.

Walsh was defeated 8-1 by Lee, who also received votes in the latest NAIA rankings and 7-2 by NAIA ranked 11th, Shorter College. Joel Carney (Sr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) posted the lone win for Walsh against Lee. He won 6-2, 6-3 at first singles. It was again Carney giving the Cavs their only wins against Shorter. Cavs Lose Third Straight, 7-2 to Shorter College (GA)

Walsh dropped its third straight match, losing 7-2 at Shorter College yesterday. The defeat dropped the Cavs to 1-3 on the season. The Cavs number one doubles team of Joel Carney (Sr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) and Lanny Rubin (Fr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) posted the Cavs only win (8-4). Carney lost his first match of the season at first singles, to fall to 3-1 on the year. The Cavs next match is March 13 at Oberlin College.

Cavs Drop 8-1 Decision to Lee University

Walsh fell to 1-2 on the young season, after losing 8-1 to Lee University (TN) yesterday in Rome, Georgia. The Cavs continue their southern swing today, with a match against Berry College at 2 p.m. Number one singles player, Joel Carney (Sr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic), top right earned the Cavs only match win with 6-2, 6-3, triumph. Carney is 3-0 on the season.

Cavs Fall 6-3 to Kenyon

Walsh fell 6-3 to Kenyon College last night at Hall of Fame Courts to even its record at 1-1. Kenyon won two out of three doubles matches, after taking four out of six singles matches with the Cavs. Senior Joel Carney (Canton, OH/Central Catholic) top right improved to 2-0 at first singles, after downing Kenyon's Borko Tesic 6-2, 7-6. Lanny Rubin (Fr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) dropped his first match of the season losing 6-4, 6-1 at secpnd singles. Carney and Rubin were later defeated at first doubles 8-5. Walsh's Dan Schuler (Sr., Navarre, OH/Perry) improved to 2-0 at third singles with a 6-1, 6-2 win. Schuler and Chris Pleska (Jr., Wooster, OH/HS) won the Cavs only doubles match, winning 8-5 at second doubles.

Cavs Blank Mount Union 7-0 in Season Opener

Walsh won all nine matches to blank Mount Union (1-2) 7-0 in their season opener yesterday. The Cavs host Kenyon College at Hall of Fame Courts on Friday at 5:30 p.m. Senior Joel Carney (Canton, OH/Central Catholic) top right opened the season at number one singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win. Carney then combined with freshman Lanny Rubin (Fr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) bottom right to post an 8-2 first doubles victory. Rubin also won at second doubles 6-0, 6-0. Dan Schuler (Sr., Navarre, OH/Perry) won 6-2, 6-3 at third singles and combined with Chris Pleska (Jr., Wooster, OH/HS) to win 8-3 at second doubles. Pleska won 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 at fourth singles. Martin Echague (So., Buenos Aires, Argentina/Eccleston) won 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 at fifth singles and Felix Vargas (Sr., Caracas, Venezuela/Iea) won 6-0, 6-4 at sixth singles. Kevin Clinesmith (Sr., Wooster, OH/HS) and Aaron Violand (Sr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) won 8-2 at third doubles.

Cavs Open New Season

Walsh opens the season with matches against Mount Union College and Kenyon College this week. The Cavs meet the Purple Raiders at Mount Union at 6:30 on Wednesday and battle Kenyon at the Hall of Fame Courts at 5:30 on Friday night. Walsh finished 15-5 last season and qualified for the NAIA Championships.
