"Boyne Earns NAIA Honor"

Walsh University senior, Julianne Boyne (Strongsville, OH/Padua Franciscan) (Pictured top right) has been selected to the NAIA Daktronics Scholar-Athlete team for the second straight year. Boyne, who majors in early childhood education, carries a 3.92 grade point average.

"Cavs Place Five on All-AMC Women's Soccer Team"

Walsh University placed five players on the American Mideast Conference South Division Team. The Cavs finished 7-10 this past season and 3-5 in the AMC South.  The Cavs placed two players on the second team and three on the honorable mention team.

Senior Meghan Patton (M, Parma, OH/Holy Name) (Pictured top right) and junior Abby Swope (Wadsworth, OH/HS) (Pictured bottom right) were each selected second team.  Patton was honorable mention last season, while Swope was a first-team choice last year.  Patton led the Cavs in assists with five and was third in total points with seven.  She finishes as Walsh's all-time leader in career assists with 24. Swope led the Cavs in scoring with eight goals and 17 points.

The Cavs placed three freshmen on the honorable mention team; goalkeeper Rachel Burcher (Fr., Wadsworth, OH/HS), midfielder Shayna McDermitt (Green, OH/HS) and defender Michelle Kenski (Lodi, OH/Cloverleaf).  Burcher stopped 100 shots in 17 games and 1,239 minutes, with a 1.53 goals against average.  McDermitt scored three goals and totaled seven points, while Kenski played in all 17 games on the defensive side.

"Cavs Lose Finale, Miss Post Season"

Walsh (7-10, 3-5 AMC S) fell 5-1 to American Mideast Conference South co-champion Mount Vernon Nazarene University 5-1, and failed to qualify for the AMC Qualifying Tournament.  The Cavs finished tied for fifth in the AMC South with Urbana. 

 

Mount Vernon built a 3-0 halftime lead, scoring at the 16, 42 and 43-minute marks of the first half.  Walsh only tally came at the 52-minute mark, when Haley Rogers (So., Green, OH/HS) scored on a corner to trim the lead to 3-1.  Amanda Waltz (Jr., North Canton, OH/Hoover) assisted on the goal.  The Cougars then iced the game, with goals at the 52 and 76-minute marks.  Mt. Vernon out shot the Cavs 23-6 and had four corner kicks to the Cavs three.  Rachel Burcher (Fr., Wadsworth, OH/HS) had seven saves in goal for the Cavs.

 

Haley Rogers led the Cavs in scoring with eight goals and 17 points.  Abby Swope (Jr., Wadsworth, OH/HS) finished second in scoring with five goals and 13 points.  Meghan Patton (Sr., Parma, OH/Holy Name) led the team with five assists and became the all-time leader with 24.  Cavs' keeper, Rachel Burcher, finished a fine freshman season with three shutouts and a 1.53 goals against average.

"Cavs Lose Season Finale, 5-1 at Mount Vernon Nazarene"

(Mt. Vernon, OH) Mount Vernon Nazaerne (10-6-1, 7-1-0 AMC S) clinched a share of the American Mideast Conference South title, with a 5-1 victory over the Cavs today.  Walsh finishes the season 7-10 overall and 3-5 in the AMC South.  Mount Vernon built a 3-0 halftime lead, scoring at the 16, 42 and 43-minute marks of the first half.  Walsh only tally came at the 52-minute mark, when Haley Rogers (So., Green, OH/HS) scored on a corner to trim the lead to 3-1.  Amanda Waltz (Jr., North Canton, OH/Hoover) assisted on the goal.  The Cougars then iced the game, with goals at the 52 and 76-minute marks.  Mt. "Cavs Split AMC Games, Keep Post Season Hopes Alive"

Walsh (7-9, 3-4 AMC S) split a pair of non-conference games last week, to keep their post season hopes alive. The Cavs lost 2-0 to Cedarville University, but rebounded to edge arch-rival Malone College 2-1, in two American Mideast Conference South Division games. Yesterday, they were blanked 2-0 by Seton Hill in a non-conference game.  The Cavs are in fifth place in the AMC South and close the regular season at Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Wednesday (3 pm).  Mount Vernon is tied for the AMC South lead with Ohio Dominican.  Walsh must win over the Cougars and need a Cedarville win over Malone, on Tuesday, to garner the fourth and final playoff spot in the South.

 

Cedarville University's Abby Price scored a goal in each half, in their 2-0 win over the Cavs last Tuesday.  The loss halted Walsh's two game win streak. Price gave the Yellow Jackets a 1-0 lead at the 13:45 mark of the first half, and then added an insurance goal, on a penalty kick, at the 68:35 mark.  Walsh out shot Cedarville 18-6 and led in corner kicks 7-1.

 

Walsh downed Malone 2-1 on Homecoming Saturday.  Shayna McDermitt (Fr., Green, OH/HS) broke a scoreless tie with a goal at the 51-minute mark, then assisted on what proved to be Amanda Waltz's (Jr., North Canton, OH/Hoover) game winning goal at the 66:50 mark.  Malone cut the lead to 2-1 at the 69-minute mark on a goal from Julie Herbst.  Malone out shot the Cavs 11-8.  Cavs keeper Rachel Burcher (Fr., Wadsworth, OH/HS) had six saves.

"Seton Hill Blanks Cavs"

Walsh (7-9) fell 2-0 today, to Seton Hill University in a non-league game.  The Griffins posted two first half goals, and then kept the Cavs out of the net.  Walsh out shot Seton Hill 10-7, and led in corner kicks 7-2.  The Cavs play their regular season finale at Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Wednesday.

"Cavs Edge Malone 2-1"

Walsh (7-8, 3-4 AMC S) kept its playoff hopes alive, with a 2-1 American Mideast Conference South win over visiting Malone College today.  Shayna McDermitt (Fr., Green, OH/HS) broke a scoreless tie with a goal at the 51-minute mark, then assisted on what proved to be Amanda Waltz's (Jr., North Canton, OH/Hoover) game winning goal at the 66:50 mark.  Malone cut the lead to 2-1 at the 69-minute mark on a goal from Julie Herbst.  Malone out shot the Cavs 11-8.  Cavs keeper Rachel Burcher (Fr., Wadsworth, OH/HS) had six saves. 

The Cavs are home to Seton Hill University tomorrow at 2 pm in a non-league contest.

"Cavs Blanked 2-0 by Cedarville"

"Cavs Rachel Burcher Selected AMC Defensive Player of the Week"

Walsh goalkeeper Rachel Burcher (Fr., Wadsworth, OH/HS) (Pictured to right) has been selected as the American Mideast Conference Defensive Player of the Week. Burcher stopped all 12 shots she face in back-to-back shutouts. She recorded seven saves in a 3-0 win against Geneva and had five saves in a 1-0 overtime victory at Siena Heights.  She lowered her goals against average to 1.21.

"Cavs Win Twice, Swope Has Big Week, Cavs Host Malone on Homecoming Saturday"

Walsh (6-7, 2-3 AMC S) won a pair of non-conference games last week, and is within a game of evening their record.  The Cavs have won three of their last four games. This week, the Cavs play two American Mideast Conference South games, they host Cedarville University (6-7-2, 1-2-2, 8th AMC S) on Tuesday (7 pm), and Malone College (7-5-2, 3-2-1, 4th AMC S) on Homecoming Saturday (3 pm).  Walsh also plays on Sunday, when the host Seton Hill University (10-4-2), game time is 2 pm.  The Cavs are sixth in the AMC South.

 

Abby Swope (Jr., Wadsworth, OH/HS) had a goal and an assist in the Cavs 3-0 non-league win over Geneva College (4-10).  Haley Rogers (So., Green, OH/HS) gave the Cavs the early lead with an unassisted goal in the first half, as the Cavs carried a 1-0 lead into halftime.  Swope then gave the Cavs a 2-0 lead five minutes into the second half on a penalty kick.  Then, with a little more than 30 seconds to play, Swope fed Meghan Patton (Sr., Parma, OH/Holy Name) on a breakaway, who then scored to close the scoring.  Walsh out shot Geneva 15-9 and led in corner kicks 5-2.  Rachel Burcher (Fr., Wadsworth, OH/HS) started in goal for the Cavs, but had to leave the game due to an injury in the second half and was replaced by Kathy Stuck (Jr., Uniontown, OH/Lake). 

 

Swope provided the only offense in the Cave overtime win at Siena Heights on Saturday, scoring on a penalty kick at the 97:46 mark in overtime.  Walsh keeper Rachel Burcher had five saves in recording the shutout.

 

Abby Swope is second in scoring to Haley Rogers.  Rogers has seven goals and 15 points, while Swope has five goals and 13 points.  Rachel Burcher lowered her goals against average to 1.21 and is ninth in the AMC.

"Swope's OT Goal Lifts Cavs over Siena Heights"

(Siena Heights, MI) Walsh's (6-7) Abby Swope (Jr., Wadsworth, OH/HS) scored in the first overtime, on a penalty kick, to lift the Cavs to a 1-0 non-conference road win today.  The winning goal came at the 97:46 mark.  The win was the third in the last four games for the Cavs.  Shots on goal, and corner kicks, were even at seven.  Walsh keeper Rachel Burcher (Fr., Wadsworth, OH/HS) had five saves in recording the shutout.

Walsh is home to Cedarville University on Tuesday night at 7 pm, for an American Mideast Conference South game.

"Swope Has Goal & Assist in 3-0 Win over Geneva"

"Cavs Split AMC Games"

Walsh (4-7, 2-3) split a pair of American Mideast Conference South games last week, and is in tied for fifth in the division with Malone College.  The Cavs blanked Urbana University 2-0, and then fell 5-0 at Tiffin University on Saturday.  This week the Cavs play two non-league games.  On Tuesday, Walsh will host Geneva College at 7 pm, and then travel to Siena Heights College (MI) on Saturday for a 1 pm start.

 

Shayna McDermitt (Fr., Green, OH/HS) scored both goals in Walsh's 2-0 win over Urbana University on Tuesday.  The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Cavs.  McDermitt gave the Cavs the lead with her first goal at the 11:30 mark of the first half and then scored an insurance goal with 20 seconds to play.  The first goal was assisted by Abby Swope (Jr., Wadsworth, OH/HS) and the second by Starrzanne Stipes (Sr., Coshocton, OH/River View).  Walsh keeper Rachel Burcher (Fr., Wadsworth, OH/HS) had eight saves in recording the shutout.  Walsh out shot the Blue Knights 24-7 and led in corner kicks 6-3. 

 

Tiffin University shutout the Cavs 5-0 on Saturday.  The Dragons led 1-0, before exploding for four second half goals.  Tiffin led 2-0 late in the second half, before scoring three goals in the final 11:25.  Walsh was out shot 18-6.

 

Haley Rogers (So., Green, OH/HS) leads the team in scoring with six goals and 13 points.  Meghan Patton (Sr., Parma, OH/Holy Name) is now the all-time assist leader with 24 career assists.  She has dished out a team-leading five this season. Goalie Rachel Burcher has 1.45 goals against average.

"Cavs Shutout at Tiffin"

(Tiffin, OH) Walsh (4-7, 2-3 AMC S) was shutout 5-0 at Tiffin University (10-2-1, 4-0-1 AMC S) in an American Mideast Conference South Division game today.  The Dragons led 1-0, before exploding for four second half goals.  Walsh was out shot 18-6.

"Cavs Win Streak Snapped"

Walsh (3-6, 1-2 AMC S) had its modest two-game win streak snapped, with back-to-back road losses this week.  Walsh lost 1-0 at Otterbein College on Tuesday, then fell 2-0, at Ohio Dominican University in an AMC South tilt on Saturday.  The Cavs look to snap the two-game skid against Urbana University at home on Wednesday in an AMC South game, then play at Tiffin University in another AMC S game on Saturday (1 pm).

(Columbus, OH) Walsh (3-6, 1-2) was shutout 2-0 at Ohio Dominican University (3-6-1, 2-1) in an American Mideast Conference South Division game today.  The Panthers' Jen Burgei scored both goals in the first half, to provide the home team with all the offense they would need.  Burgei tallied the first goal at the the 14-minute mark and the second at the 20:52 mark.  The Cavs were blanked, despite out shooting ODU 14-11.  Cavs' keeper Rachel Burcher (Fr., Wadsworth, OH/HS) had 10 saves.

The Cavs host Urbana University in an AMC South game at 7 pm on Wednesday.

"Cavs Blanked 1-0 at Otterbein"

"Offense Comes to Life"

After a sluggish start offensively, Walsh exploded for 17 goals in wins over Myers University and the University of Rio Grande.  The wins pulled the Cavs even in the American Mideast Conference South at 1-1 and improved their overall mark to 3-4.  The Cavs are on their first two-game win streak of the season.  This week, they travel to Otterbein College for a non-conference game on Tuesday (4 pm) and to Ohio Dominican University for an AMC South match-up on Saturday (2 pm).

Walsh dominated Myers University with a 10-1 win on the road last Wednesday.  Amanda Patrick (Fr., Medina, OH/Cloverleaf) turned the "Hat Trick" with three goals.  Chelsea Saunders (Fr., Hinckley, OH/Highland) followed with two goals.  Teammates Leya Spence (So., Mansfield, OH/Madison), Abby Swope (Jr., Wadsworth, OH/HS), Haley Rogers (So., Green, OH/HS), Julianne Boyne (Sr., Strongsville, OH/Padua Franciscan), and Rachel Ehlert (Fr., Parma Heights, OH/Holy Name) all chipped in with one goal a piece.  

Walsh then evened its AMC South record (1-1) with a 7-0 shutout win over the University of Rio Grande (1-7, 0-2) on Saturday. It was Haley Rogers' turn to turn the "Hat Trick," when she tallied three goals, while Crissy Perna (So., Alliance, OH/Marlington) scored twice.  Leya Spence and Abby Swope each scored a goal and had an assist.  Walsh out-shot Rio 30-2.

"Cavs Even AMC Mark With Whitewash of Rio Grande"

Walsh evened its American Mideast Conference South record at 1-1, with a 7-0 shutout win over the University of Rio Grande (1-7, 0-2) today.  The win was the second straight for the Cavs and improved their overall record to 3-4.  Walsh has now scored 17 goals in their last two games.  Haley Rogers (So., Green, OH/HS) turned the "Hat Trick" for the Cavs with three goals, while Crissy Perna (So., Alliance, OH/Marlington) scored twice.  Leya Spence (So., Mansfield, OH/Madison) and Abby Swope (Jr., Wadsworth, OH/HS) each scored a goal and had an assist.  Walsh out shot Rio 30-2.

"Cavs Win Big Over Myers University"

Walsh dominated Myers University with a 10-1 defeat on the road.  Amanda Patrick (Fr., Medina, OH/Cloverleaf) lead the Cavs with three goals.  Chelsea Saunders (Fr., Hinckley, OH/Highland) followed with two goals.  Teamates Leya Spence (So., Mansfield, OH/Madison), Abby Swope (Jr., Wadsworth, OH/HS), Haley Rogers (So., Green, OH/HS), Julianne Boyne (Sr., Strongsville, OH/Padua Franciscan), and Rachel Ehlert (Fr., Parma Heights, OH/Holy Name) all chipped in with one goal a piece.  

The Cavs will enter Saturday's game with a 2-4 record and will host the University of Rio Grande at 7pm.

Cavs Fall Twice, Lose AMC South Opener

Walsh fell to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the American Mideast Conference South, after dropping back-to-back games last week.  The Cavs lost road games at Saint Vincent College and their conference opener at Shawnee State University.  This week, the Cavs play at  Myers University on Wednesday (3 pm) and host the University of Rio Grande, in their second conference game, on Saturday at 7 pm.

Walsh lost 1-0 at Saint Vincent College on Tuesday.  The Bearcats scored the only goal of the game at the 7:53 mark of the first half.  Walsh out shot the Bearcats 14-8.  Rachel Burcher (Fr., Wadsworth, OH/HS) had seven saves in goal for the Cavs.

Despite out shooting Shawnee State 19-4, the Cavs lost its AMC South opener 1-0 at Shawnee State University on Saturday.  After a scoreless half, Shawnee State scored the only goal of the game at the 53:00 minute mark of the second half.  It appeared the Cavs tied the game five minutes later, but the goal was disallowed.  Walsh has been out scored 12-3 in their first five games.

"Cavs Lose AMC South Opener 1-0 at Shawnee State"

(Portsmouth, OH)  Walsh (1-4, 0-1) lost its American Mideast Conference South opener, 1-0 at Shawnee State University today.  After a scoreless half, Shawnee State scored the only goal of the game at the 53:00 minute mark of the second half.  It appeared the Cavs tied the game five minutes later, but the goal was disallowed.  Walsh out shot the Bears 19-4. 

Walsh is at Myers University next Wednesday.

"Cavs Fall 1-0 at Saint Vincent"

(LaTrobe, PA) Walsh (1-3) lost 1-0 at Saint Vincent College today.  The Bearcats scored the only goal of the game at the 7:53 mark of the first half.  Walsh out shot the Bearcats 14-8.  Rachel Burcher (Fr., Wadsworth, OH/HS) had seven saves in goal for the Cavs.

The Cavs are at Shawnee State for their American Mideast Conference South opener on Saturday (2 pm).

"Cavs Notch First Win"

Walsh (1-2) won its first game of the season, defeating the University of Sant Francis (IN) 2-1 tonight.  Haley Rogers (So., Green, OH/HS) scored both Walsh goals in the first half, at the 21:39 mark and again at the 31:40 mark, on a breakaway. Rachel Burcher (Fr., Wadsworth, OH/HS) turned a fine performance between the pipes, stopping ten shots.  USF out shot Walsh 18-10. Walsh is at Saint Vincent on Tuesday.

"Cavs Fall to 0-2"

Walsh fell to 0-2, after losing 4-1 to NAIA sixth ranked Houghton College today.  Houghton scored twice in the first six minutes to take a 2-0 lead.  Walsh's only goal came on a penalty kick by Abby Swope (Jr., Wadsworth, OH/HS). 

Walsh is home to Daemen College next Friday at 5 pm.

"Cavs Drop Opener 5-0"

Walsh (0-1) dropped its season opener 5-0 to Roberts Wesleyan tonight, in its first home game under the lights.   Wesleyan jumped to an early 3-0 lead, scoring at the three, four and eleven minute mark and led 4-0 at the half.  Walsh out shot the visitors 13-6.  The Cavs meet NAIA sixth ranked Houghton College at 3 pm tomorrow.  Houghton defeated Malone 1-0 today.

"Cavs Open Season at Home"

Walsh opens the new season on Friday, September 1, under the lights against Roberts Wesleyan.  It will be the first regular season night game in soccer history.  The Cavs finished 11-6-2 overall last season and 5-2-1 in the American Mideast Conference.  The Cavs return 17 letter winners and 10 starters.
