"Mead Announces Soccer Recruiting Class"
 
Walsh University Soccer Head Coach Tim Mead has announced his 2007-2008 recruiting class.  Mead has added six recruits for the upcoming academic year.  Walsh finished this past season 11-6-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the South Division of the American Mideast Conference.  Walsh is a member of the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics).

Matt Charek (defender, 5-11, 170) lettered three times at Green High School.  He was named Team Captain his senior year, and achieved second team All-Suburban League honors.  He scored three goals with five assists his senior year.  Charek is undecided on a major.

Ben Latimer (center/left midfielder, 5-10, 151) lettered twice at Big Walnut High School in Delaware, Ohio.  Latimer was a Scholar Athlete and Golden Eagle Award winner.  He tallied five goals as a senior.  He will major in business.

Clint Merck (center midfielder/forward, 6-0, 162) earned four letters for St. Thomas Aquinas High School.  He was the leading scorer for the Knights, tallying 25 goals and dishing out nine assists his senior year.  Merck was named Team MVP as well as first team All-Tri-County Soccer League, leading his team to their first regional appearance in school history.  He will major in business.

Alex Morgart (center midfielder, 5-9, 150) earned four letters at Waterloo High School.  He was Portage Trail Conference Player of the Year his senior year, first team All-PTC, and All-District.  Morgart scored 12 goals and notched 13 assists for the 2006 season.  He will be a government and foreign affairs major.

Kyle Reese (forward/midfielder, 6-1, 165) is from Canfield High School, where he earned three letters.  Reese was named Northeast District Player of the Year, first team All-State, 2006 NSCAA/Adidas High School Boys All-Region IV, and Team MVP his junior and senior year.  He scored 17 goals, with 11 assists, while helping his team to a 14-3 finish his senior year.  Reese  will be a liberal arts major.

Rick VanDorsten (defender, 5-10, 165) lettered three times for the GlenOak Golden Eagles.  He earned first team All-County, All-Federal League and All-District honors.  VanDorsten tallied three goals and six assists his junior.  He will major in business.

"Cavaliers Earn NAIA Honors"

Four men's soccer players have been honored by the NAIA.  Walsh University goalkeeper Ben Pflum (So., Napoleon, OH/HS) and defender Tim Eddy (Sr., Canal Fulton, OH/Northwest) have been selected NAIA honorable mention All-American, while Greg Keller (Sr., Napoleon, OH/HS) and Martin Wejcman (Sr., Buenos Aires, ARG/ORT) were selected as Daktronics Scholar Athletes. 

Pflum recorded eight shutouts, with a 1.00 goals against average.  He stopped 94 shots in 18 games, in 1,619 minutes.  Tim played in all 18 games, and was instrumental in Walsh's defensive efforts.  The Cavs allowed 0.99 goals per game.  He also had one goal and one assist.  Pflum and Eddy also earned first-team All-American Mideast Conference South Division and NAIA Region IX.

Keller, who majors in finance, carries a 3.50 grade point average, while Wejcman majored in finance and is seeking is master's degree in business administration and carries a 3.68 grade point average.

"Cavs Place Six on All-AMC Men's Soccer Team/Eddy & Pflum 1st Team"

Walsh University placed seven players on the American Mideast Conference South Division team.  The Cavs finished this past season 11-6 overall, 4-3-1 in the AMC South and qualified for the post season.  Walsh placed two players on the first team; two on the second team and two players honorable mention.

Goalkeeper Ben Pflum (So., Napoleon, OH/HS) (Pictured top right) and defender Tim Eddy (Sr., Canal Fulton, OH/Northwest) (Pictured bottom right) were named to the first-team.  Pflum recorded eight shutouts, with a goals against average of 1.00.  He stopped 94 shots in 18 games, in 1,619 minutes. Eddy earned the honor on the defensive side for the Cavs. Tim played in all 18 games, and was instrumental in Walsh's defensive efforts.  The Cavs allowed 0.99 goals per game.  He also had one goal and one assist. Ryan Inama (Sr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) and Casey Eck (So., North Canton, OH/Hoover) were each named second-team.  Inama was second in scoring for the Cavs with 19 points.  The midfielder led the team with seven assists and was third with six goals.  Eck, also a midfielder, led the Cavs with 10 goals and 23 points.  Leon O'Neill (F, Sr., Blackburn, England/Nordan) and Martin Wejcman (D, Sr., Buenos Aires, Argentina/Ort) were each selected honorable mention.  O'Neill was third in scoring with 18 points, on seven goals and four assists. Wejcman played in 16 games and had one assist.

"Early Second Half Blitz Ends Cavs' Season at Rio"

(Rio Grande, OH) The University of Rio Grande (15-2) scored three goals in a six-minute span early in the second half, and went on to blank the Cavs (11-6-1) 3-0, in an American Mideast Conference Qualifying Tournament game today.  After a scoreless first half, Rio's Conar Dawson scored the first of his back-to-back goals at the 52-minute mark, to give the Redmen the lead.  Dawson scored again at the 57-minute, then assisted on Guy Heywood's goal one-minute later to complete the scoring.  Rio out shot the Cavs 17-3 and led in corner kicks 5-1. Rio will host a semifinal game next week.

"Cavs Clinch Playoff Berth, Head to Rio Grande"

Walsh (11-5-1, 4-3-1) clinched a berth in the American Mideast Conference Qualifying Tournament, by defeating Malone College (2-1 OT) and playing Tiffin University to a double overtime 0-0 tie last week.  The Cavs earned the final spot in the South with 13 points, edging out Mount Vernon Nazarene (12 pts.).  The Cavs will travel to the University of Rio Grande on Saturday (6 pm), for the second straight year, for their playoff opener.  Rio edged the Cavs 3-1 last year in the post season, and narrowly escaped with a 2-1 regular season win over the Cavs on September 24.  The Cavs have won four of their last five games and are unbeaten in their last five games.

 

Walsh kept its post season hopes alive, with a thrilling overtime win against Malone under the lights on Wednesday.  Ryan Inama (Sr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) opened the scoring at the 10-minute mark, which gave the Cavs a 1-0 lead at the half.  Malone's Alex Fernandez (Sr., Elche, Spain) tied the game at 1-1, at the 55-minute mark.  Casey Eck (So., North Canton, OH/Hoover) then scored the overtime winner for the Cavs on a header, four minutes into sudden death on an assist from Inama.  Cavs' keeper Ben Pflum (So., Napoleon, OH/HS) had six saves.  Walsh out shot Malone 12-8 and led in corner kicks 3-1.

 

The weather provided the offense in Walsh's 0-0, double overtime tie against Tiffin on Saturday.  High winds and rain kept both teams from mounting any offense.  Tiffin out shot the Cavs 15-8 and led in corner kicks 12-4.  Walsh keeper Ben Pflum had 11 saves in recording the shutout, his eighth of the season. Eck lowered his goals against average to 0.88.

 

Casey Eck leads the Cavs in scoring with 10 goals and 23 points.  Ryan Inama leads the team with seven assists and is second with 19 points.

"Double Overtime Tie Lifts Cavs to Post Season"

Walsh (11-5-1, 4-3-1 AMC S) has qualified for the post season, and the American Mideast Conference Qualifying Tournament, by virtue of their double overtime scoreless tie with Tiffin University (11-6-1, 5-2-1 AMC S)tonight.  The Cavs grabbed the fourth and final spot in the South by one-point over Mount Vernon Nazarene.  Nazarene, who lost 1-0 to Rio Grande earlier in the day, finishes with 12 points, while the Cavs have 13.  Walsh will be on the road next Saturday, against an opponent to be announced.  Tiffin out shot the Cavs 15-8 and led in corner kicks 12-4.  Walsh keeper Ben Pflum (So., Napoleon, OH/HS) had 11 saves in recording the shutout.

"Cavs Keep Playoff Hopes Alive With 2-1 Overtime Win over Malone"

Walsh (11-5, 4-3 AMC S) kept its post season hopes alive, with a 2-1 win in overtime against Malone College (6-7-2, 0-6-1) in an American Mideast Conference South game tonight.  The Cavs must now win on Saturday against Tiffin University (10-5, 4-2 AMC S) to clinch a playoff berth.  The Cavs host the Dragons at 7 pm.

American Mideast Conference Players of the Week
Tim Eddy, Walsh (defense)

CEDARVILLE, Ohio - The American Mideast Conference men's soccer Players of the Week are Tiffin University forward Tony Iyayi ( (Lagos, Nigeria) and Walsh defender Tim Eddy (Sr., Canal Fulton, OH/Northwest). This is the second time this season that Eddy has been selected.

Eddy, a 5-9 senior, led Walsh's defense in two victories. He had an assist in Walsh's 2-0 win over Mount Vernon Nazarene, and sparked the defense in the Cavs 2-0 shutout of Houghton College.

"Cavs Even AMC South Mark to Stay in Post Season Hunt/Face Malone Under the Lights on Wednesday"

Walsh (10-5, 3-3 AMC S) won twice last week, to stay in the hunt for a post season berth.  The Cavs blanked Mount Vernon Nazarene University 2-0, in a must-win situation last Wednesday, then edged Houghton College 2-1 in a non-league game on Homecoming Saturday.  The Cavs are currently fifth in the American Mideast Conference South Division, with their final two games this week.  The Cavs host Malone College (6-6-2, 0-5-1 AMC S) on Wednesday at 7 pm, and Tiffin University (10-5, 4-2 AMC S) on Saturday at 7 pm.

 

Ryan Inama (Sr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) had a goal and an assist in the shutout win over Mount Vernon Nazarene.  Inama opened the scoring at the 10:00 mark of the first half on an assist from Tim Eddy (Sr., Canal Fulton, OH/Northwest), then assisted on Josh Cook's (So., Perrysdale, OH/Hillsdale) goal at the 66-minute mark to close the scoring.  Keeper Ben Pflum (So., Napoleon, OH/HS) stopped five shots in recording the shutout.  Walsh out shot the Cougars 13-7, while Mount Vernon had six corner kicks to Walsh's four.

 

Walsh won for the fourth time in the last five games, with its win over Houghton College 2-1. Casey Eck's (So., North Canton, OH/Hoover) goal at the 27-minute mark snapped a 1-1 tie.  Houghton opened the scoring at the four-minute mark, before Walsh rebounded to tie the game on a goal from Alex Birtcher (So., Napoleon, OH/HS) four minutes later.  Jason Lindensmith (So., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) assisted on the Birtcher goal.  Eck then scored the game winner on an assist from Leon O'Neill (Sr., Blackburn, ENG/Nordan).  Walsh out shot Houghton 9-4 and led in corner kicks 5-3.

"Cavs Edge Houghton 2-1"

Walsh (10-5) won for the fourth time in the last five games, by defeating Houghton College 2-1 in a non-league game tonight. Casey Eck's (So., North Canton, OH/Hoover) goal at the 27-minute mark snapped a 1-1 tie.  Houghton opened the scoring at the four-minute mark, before Walsh rebounded to tie the game on a goal from Alex Birtcher (So., Napoleon, OH/HS) four minutes later.  Jason Lindensmith (So., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) assisted on the Birtcher goal.  Eck then scored the game winner on an assist from Leon O'Neill (Sr., Blackburn, ENG/Nordan).  Walsh out shot Houghton 9-4 and led in corner kicks 5-3.

The Cavs are idle until Wednesday night, when they host Malone College in an American Mideast Conference South game at 7 pm.

"Cavs Blank Mount Vernon Nazarene 2-0"

Behind a goal and an assist from Ryan Inama (Sr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary), Walsh blanked Mount Vernon Nazarene 2-0 in an American Mideast Conference South Division game.  The win improves Walsh's AMC South mark to 3-3 and their overall record to 9-5.  With the loss, the Cougars fall to 3-2 in the AMC South and to 6-8-1 overall.  Inama opened the scoring at the 10:00 mark of the first half, on an assist from Tim Eddy (Sr., Canal Fulton, OH/Northwest).  Inama then assisted on Josh Cook's (So., Perrysdale, OH/Hillsdale) goal at the 66-minute mark to close the scoring.  Keeper Ben Pflum (So., Napoleon, OH/HS) stopped five shots in recording the shutout.  Walsh out shot the Cougars 13-7, while Mount Vernon had six corner kicks to Walsh's four.

"Cavs Fall to Cedarville, Host Mount Vernon in Big Game on Wednesday"

Walsh (8-5, 2-3 AMC S) lost its only game last week, 2-0 to Cedarville University.  The loss dropped the Cavs into sixth place in the American Mideast Conference South.  This week, the Cavs host Mount Vernon Nazarene University (6-7-1, 3-1, T-3rd AMC S) on Wednesday (7 pm) in an AMC South game, and Houghton College (4-7-2) in a non-conference game on Homecoming Saturday (6 pm).

 

The Cavs' Tim Eddy (Sr., Canal Fulton, OH/Northwest) was selected as the AMC Defensive Player of the Week, for the week of October 2-8.  Walsh went 2-0 during the week.

 

Cedarville scored twice in the first 16 minutes on Saturday night.  Leon O'Neill (Sr., Blackburn, ENG/Nordan) scored Walsh's only goal at the 22-minute mark on a penalty kick.

 

Casey Eck (So., North Canton, OH/Hoover) in seventh in the AMC in goals per game (0.67) and in points per game (1.58).  Keeper Ben Pflum (So., Napoleon, OH/HS) is fourth in goals against average (1.02).

"Early Goals Lift Cedarville over Cavs"

On the strength of two first half goals, Cedarville University (5-8-1, 3-3 AMC S) downed the Cavs (8-5, 2-3 AMC S) 2-1 in an American Mideast Conference South game tonight.  The Yellow Jackets scored their first goal, just two minutes into the contest, then added their second goal at the 16-minute mark.  Walsh cut the lead to 2-1, at the 22-minute mark, as Leon O'Neill (Sr., Blackburn, ENG/Nordan) scored on a penalty kick.  Walsh out shot the Jackets 10-8.

The Cavs are back in action on Wednesday, when they host Mount Vernon Nazarene in an AMC South at 7 pm.  On Saturday, they host Houghton College in a non-conference game at 6 pm.

CEDARVILLE, Ohio - The American Mideast Conference men's soccer Players of the Week are Rio Grande forward Guy Heywood (Preston, England) and Walsh defender Tim Eddy (Sr., Canal Fulton, OH/Northwest).

Eddy, a 5-9 senior, led Walsh's defense in two victories. The Cavs defeated AMC South Division foe Shawnee State, 7-1, and Eddy was not on the field when they surrendered the lone goal. Walsh also blanked Geneva, 2-0.

"Cavs Even AMC South Mark"

Walsh (8-4, 2-2 AMC S) won twice last week and evened their American Mideast Conference South record at 2-2.  The Cavs won an AMC South contest at Shawnee State University, and then won a non-league match-up at Geneva College.  The Cavs are in fifth place in the AMC South and play only once this week, at home against Cedarville University (3-7-1, 1-2 AMC S) on Saturday (7 pm).

 

Casey Eck (So., North Canton, OH/Hoover) turned the "Hat Trick" in the Cavs 7-1 win over Shawnee State University on Wednesday. Walsh exploded for six second half goals, after leading 1-0 at the half.   Josh Cook (So., Perrysdale, OH/Hillsdale), Jeremy Hess (Jr., Damascus, MD/St. Johns), and Leon O'Neill (Sr., Blackburn, ENG/Nordan) each scored a goal and had an assist.  Ryan Inama (Sr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) had the Cavs other tally.  Greg Keller (Sr., Napoleon, OH/HS) had two assists.  Walsh out shot Shawnee State 31-2 and had seven corner kicks to Shawnee's one.

 

Alex Birtcher (So., Napoleon, OH/HS) had a goal and an assist, in the Cavs 2-0 win at Geneva on Friday.  After a scoreless first half, Birtcher scored on an assist from Casey Eck at the 50-minute mark to give the Cavs a 1-0 lead.  Jeremy Hess then added an insurance goal at the 67-minute mark, on an assist from Birtcher. Cavs keeper Ben Pflum (So., Napoleon, OH/HS) had six saves in recording his sixth shutout of the season.  Pflum lowered his goals against average to 0.93.  Walsh was out shot by the Golden Tornadoes 10-9, but led in corner kicks 2-1.  

 

Casey Eck leads the Cavs in scoring with eight goals and 19 points.  Leon O'Neill has six goals and 15 points and Ryan Inama has four goals and a team leading five assists for 13 points.  Alex Birtcher has three goals and four assists for ten points.

"Alex Birtcher Has a Goal and Assist in 2-0 Win at Geneva"

(Beaver Falls, PA) Walsh's Alex Birtcher (So., Napoleon, OH/HS) had a goal and an assist, in the Cavs 2-0 win at Geneva College (0-8-3) tonight.  The win was the second straight for the Cavs and improved their record to 8-4.  After a scoreless first half, Birtcher scored on an assist from Casey Eck (So., North Canton, OH/HS) at the 50-minute mark to give the Cavs a 1-0 lead.  Jeremy Hess (Jr., Damascus, MD/St.Johns) then added an insurance goal at the 67-minute mark, on an assist from Birtcher. Cavs keeper Ben Pflum (So., Napoleon, OH/HS) had six saves in recording the shutout.  Walsh was out shot by the Golden Tornadoes 10-9, but led in corner kicks 2-1. 

The Cavs are home to Cedarville University, next Saturday, in an American Mideast Conference South game at 7 pm.

"Cavs Explode in Second Half in 7-1 Win at Shawnee State, Eck Has Hat-Trick"

"Cavs Split AMC Games, On Road Twice"

Walsh (6-4, 1-2 AMC S) split a pair of American Mideast Conference South games last week.  They began the week, with an exciting 1-0 win over Urbana University, but fell 2-0 at Ohio Dominican University on Saturday.  This week, they play at Shawnee State University on Wednesday (4 pm) in an AMC South game and travel to Geneva College for an non-league game on Friday night (7 pm).

Tim Eddy's (Sr., Canal Fulton, OH/Northwest) first half goal lifted Walsh over Urbana University on Tuesday night.  Eddy scored on an assist from Ryan Inama (Sr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) in the first half.  Walsh out-shot Urbana 15-3 and controlled play for a majority of the game.  Urbana had seven corner kicks to Walsh's six.  Cavs keeper Ben Pflum (So., Napoleon, OH/HS) had two saves in recording the shutout. 

Walsh was blanked 3-0 at Ohio Dominican University (8-3-1, 2-0 AMC S) on Saturday.  The Panthers led 1-0 at halftime, and then put the game away with second half goals at the 50th and 70th minute mark.  Walsh was out shot 14-7. Ben Pflum had 10 saves.

"Cavs Blanked at ODU"

(Columbus, OH) Walsh fell to 1-2 in the American Mideast South, after being blanked 3-0 at Ohio Dominican University (8-3-1, 2-0 AMC S) today.  The loss drops the Cavs to 6-4 overall.  The Panthers led 1-0 at halftime, then put the game away with second half goals at the 50th and 70th minute mark.  Walsh was out shot 14-7.  Cavs keeper Ben Pflum (So., Napoleon, OH/HS) had 10 saves.

Walsh is at Shawnee State for an AMC South game at 4 pm on Wednesday.

"Eddy's Goal Lifts Cavs Over Urbana"

Tim Eddy's (Sr., Canal Fulton, OH/Northwest) first half goal lifted Walsh (6-3, 1-1) to a 1-0 American Mideast Conference South win over Urbana University (8-2, 0-1) tonight.  Eddy scored on an assist from Ryan Inama (Sr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary).  Walsh out-shot Urbana 15-3 and controlled play for a majority of the game.  The Cavs had a second half goal taken off the board due to an offsides call.  Urbana had seven corner kicks to Walsh's six.  Cavs keeper Ben Pflum (So., Napoleon, OH/HS) had two saves in recording the shutout. 

Walsh is at Ohio Dominican University for an AMC South contest on Saturday at 4 pm.

"Cavs Rout Myers, Fall in AMC South Opener"

Walsh (5-3, 0-1 AMC S) routed Myers University and then had their American Mideast Conference South opener pushed back a day, due to heavy rains in Southern Ohio.  The Cavs and the University of Rio Grande were forced wait until Sunday to play their conference opener.  Walsh put up a valiant effort against the ranked Redmen, before falling 2-1.  The Cavs are home to Urbana University on Tuesday night (7 pm) and play at Ohio Dominican University on Saturday (4 pm).  Both are AMC South games.

Everyone played in Walsh's 8-1 romp over Myers University on Tuesday.  The win was the second straight for the Cavs.  Seven different Cavaliers scored, with Casey Eck (So., North Canton, OH/Hoover) scoring twice and handing out an assist.  Walsh led 3-0 at the half and out shot the visitors 26-10.  Other goals were scored by Leon O'Neill (Sr., Blackburn, ENG/Nordan), Ryan Inama (Sr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary), Alex Moglinicki (Jr., Lakemore, OH/Springfield), Aaron Davis (Fr., Blackburn, ENG/Darwen Vale), Dan Sheppard (So., Tallmadge, OH/HS) and Gustavo Stille (So., Rio de Janeiro, BR/Ort).  Inama also had an assist and Alex Birtcher (So., Napoleon, OH/HS) handed out two. 

Walsh played extremely well in its AMC South Division opener, despite losing 2-1 at the University of Rio Grande (7-1, 1-0) on Sunday.  Aaron Davis (Fr., Blackburn, ENG/Darwen Vale) gave the Cavs a 1-0 lead in the first half, on an unassisted goal at the eight minute mark.  The third ranked Redmen then tied the game at the 37-minute mark, on the first of Jessie Massie's two goals.  Massie then scored the game winner, one minute into the second half.  Walsh had two great chances to tie the game in the second half, but were turned back by Redmen goalkeeper Derek Talcott.  Rio out shot the Cavs 17-8 and led in corner kicks six to four.  Cavs keeper Ben Pflum (So., Napoleon, OH/HS) had nine saves. 

Martin Wecjman (Sr., Buenos Aires, ARG/Ort) was named the AMC Defensive Player of the Week for the Cavs last week.

"Cavs Fall 2-1 to NAIA 3rd Ranked Rio Grande"

CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Tiffin forward Tony Iyayi (Lagos, Nigeria) and Walsh defender Martin Wejcman (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Ort) have been chosen the AMC Players of the Week in men's soccer.

Wejcman, a 5-6 senior, anchored the Walsh defense that posted a 2-0 victory at Roberts Wesleyan. He also assisted on the game-winning goal.

"Cavs Rout Myers 8-1"

Everyone played in Walsh's 8-1 romp over Myers University tonight.  The win was the second straight for the Cavs and improved their record to 5-2.  Seven different Cavaliers scored, with Casey Eck (So., North Canton, OH/Hoover) scoring twice and handing out an assist.  Walsh led 3-0 at the half and out shot the visitors 26-10.  Other goals were scored by Leon O'Neill (Sr., Blackburn, ENG/Nordan), Ryan Inama (Sr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary), Alex Moglinicki (Jr., Lakemore, OH/Springfield), Aaron Davis (Fr., Blackburn, ENG/Darwen Vale), Dan Sheppard (So., Tallmadge, OH/HS) and Gustavo Stille (So., Rio de Janeiro, BR/Ort).  Inama also had an assist and Alex Birtcher (So., Napoleon, OH/HS) handed out two. 

The Cavs open AMC South play at the University of Rio Grande on Saturday night (7 pm).

"Cavs Open AMC Slate on Saturday at Rio"

Walsh (4-2) split a pair of non-conference road games last week.  The Cavs lost a 1-0 heartbreaker at Saint Vincent College on Tuesday, but rebounded with a 2-0 win at Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday.  This week, Walsh plays host to Myers University on Tuesday (7 pm), then opens the American Mideast Conference South season at the University of Rio Grande on Saturday.  Rio Grande was ranked second in last week's NAIA Top 25.

Walsh had its three-game win streak snapped 1-0 at Saint Vincent College on Tuesday.  Jason Zielinski scored at the 74-minute mark for the games only tally.  Shots on goal were even at 10-10 and Walsh led in corner kicks 9-4. Cavs' goalkeeper and AMC Defense Player of the Week, Ben Pflum (So., Napoleon, OH/HS) had four saves.

CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Urbana forward Josh Baskin (Englewood, OH) and Walsh goalkeeper Ben Pflum (Napoleon, OH/HS) (Pictured top right) have been named the AMC men's soccer Players of the Week.

Pflum, a 6-1 sophomore, totaled nine saves in back-to-back shutouts. He had six saves in a 3-0 win versus Daemen and added three saves in a 5-0 decision against Saint Francis IN.

"Cavs Blanked 1-0 at Saint Vincent"

(LaTrobe, PA) Walsh (3-2) had its three-game win streak snapped 1-0 at Saint Vincent College today.  Jason Zielinski scored at the 74-minute mark for the games only tally.  Shots on goal were even at 10-10 and Walsh led in corner kicks 9-4. Cavs' goalkeeper Ben Pflum (So., Napoleon, OH/HS) had four saves.

The Cavs are at Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday (1 pm).

"Cavs Record Third Straight Win and Consecutive Shutout"

Walsh blanked its third straight opponent and improved to 3-1, after blanking the University of Saint Francis (IN) 5-0 tonight.  Five different Cavaliers scored, as they out shot the Cougars 22-7.  Ryan Inama (Sr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) scored twice and dished out two assists and Greg Keller (Jr., Napoleon, OH/HS) and Leon O'Neil (Sr., Blackburn, England/Nordan) each scored and handed out an assist.  Casey Eck (So., North Canton, OH/Hoover) and Aaron Davis (Fr., Blackburn, ENG/Darwen Vale) had the Cavs other goals.  Walsh led 2-0 at half.

The Cavs are at Saint Vincent College on Tuesday.

"Cavs Blank Daemen 3-0"

Walsh (2-1) won its first home game under the lights, shutting out Daemen College 3-0 tonight.  The Cavs led 2-0 at the half, as Leon O'Neil (Sr., Blackburn, England/Nordan) scored on an assist from Aaron Davis (Fr., Blackburn, ENG/Darwen Vale) and Casey Eck (So., North Canton, OH/Hoover) on an assist from Greg Keller (Jr., Napoleon, OH/HS).  Alex Birtcher (So., Napoleon, OH) scored the lone goal of the second half on an assist from Alex Mogilnicki (Jr., Lakemor, OH/Springfield).  Goalkeeper Ben Pflum (So., Napoleon, OH/HS) recorded his second straight win, stopping six shots.  Walsh out shot Daemen 23-11.  The Cavs meet the University of Saint Francis (IN) at 7 pm tomorrow night.

"Cavs Even Mark With Road Win"

Walsh evened its record at 1-1, with a 2-0 road win at Seton Hill University (1-2) today.  The Cavs snapped a scoreless tie with two second half goals.  Casey Eck (So., North Canton, OH/Hoover) scored on a deflection two minutes into the second half to give Walsh a 1-0 lead.  Leon O'Neil (Sr., Blackburn, England/Nordan) then scored on an assist from Greg Keller (Jr., Napoleon, OH/HS) eight minutes later to close the scoring.  Goalkeeper Ben Pflum (So., Napoleon, OH/HS) made three outstanding saves in the second half and seven total.  Shots on goal were even at 11. 

Walsh plays its home opener next Friday night at 7 pm against Daemen College.

"Cavs Fall in Opener at Siena Heights"

Walsh (0-1) lost its season opener 3-1 at Siena Heights (MI) (2-0) on Sunday.  Ryan Inama (Sr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) scored the Cavs' lone goal at the 23-minute mark of the first half to tie the contest at 1-1.  Greg Keller (Jr., Napoleon, OH/HS) assisted on the Inama goal.  Siena Heights snapped the tie five minutes later and scored an insurance goal in the final minute.  Walsh out-shot Siena 8-7.

The Cavs are at Seton Hill University this Saturday at 3 pm.

"Cavs Drop Opener, 3-1, at Siena Heights"

Walsh (0-1) lost the season opener 3-1 at Siena Heights (MI) today.  Ryan Inama (Sr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) scored the Cavs' lone goal on an assist from Greg Keller (Jr., Napoleon, OH/HS).  The goal tied the game at 1-1 at the 23-minute mark of the first half.  Siena Heights snapped the tie five minutes later, then added an insurance goal at the 89-minute mark.

The Cavs are at Seton Hill University next Saturday.

"Cavs Open 36th Season at Siena Heights on Sunday"

Walsh opens its 36th season at Siena Heights, this Sunday at 2 pm.  Walsh's home opener, under the lights, is Friday, September against Daemen at 7 pm.

Veteran Head Coach Tim Mead (261-181-28) is at the helm for the 25th straight season. Walsh finished 11-6-2 overall last season and 4-3-1 (4th-tie) in the South Division of the American Mideast Conference.  The Cavs return 13 letter winners and three starters from last season. 

Walsh and Siena Heights are meeting for the fourth time, with the series tied at 1-1, with a tie.  Wwalsh won 3-0 last year.
