2009 Outlook

Walsh University Track and Field looks to the future for the 2009 season.  With eight returning national qualifiers: 4x800 meter relay team (school record 9:36) of Megan Case, Kristin Havens, Erin Koppel and Kristen LeFever, shot put (indoor, 40’9”) Danielle Cofojohn, shot put (outdoor, 41’5”) Holly Gospodinsky, 3000 meter walk Maria Mudd (17:00.00), and discus (outdoor, 143’4”)   Danielle Cofojohn, the Cavaliers have a strong base to build from.

FIELD EVENTS/THROWS
The throwing crew could be tough to beat in ’09 as they finished in the top eight in all AMC Throwing events last season. Holly Gospodinsky (So., Wadsworth, OH/HS) captured the AMC Shot Put crown with a heave of 41’5”. Just behind her was Danielle Cofojohn (Jr., Diamond, OH/Southeast) in second. In American Mideast Conference competition, the Cavs placed Natalie Borland (So., Kent, OH/Roosevelt) and Cara Bedard (So., Randolph, OH/Waterloo) in the discus, shot put and javelin, with Cofojohn and Gospodinsky leading the way. Others returning in their events are: Abbey Marshall (Sr., New Boston, OH/Glenwood), Abbie Sullivan (Sr., Canton, OH/GlenOak), and newcomers Melissa Overman (Fr., Amherst, OH/Steele), Staci Grace (Fr., Coshocton, OH/River View) and Jeruna Jackson (Fr., Euclid, OH/HS).

The jumps crew is solid with Borland returning as a conference place finisher in the high jump.  She will be pushed this year by freshman Catie Shears (Washington Court House, OH/HS).  Emma Heck (So., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) posted the team’s best performance last year in the pole vault and looks for school records this year. Hilary Datillo (Sr., Mason, OH/HS) also vaults and high jumps. Ashley Lewis (So., Louisville, OH/HS), Jessica Swihart (Sr., Canton, OH/GlenOak), and Chantelle Richards (So., Akron, OH/East) will look to place in the long jump and Shears and Borland will also compete in the triple jump.

HURDLES
The hurdle crew returns with two top eight conference finishers. Jackie Misiak (Sr., North Royalton, OH/HS), Swihart and Sullivan have all been among the top in the AMC in either the 100 hurdles or the 400 hurdles. Katelyn Paul (Jr., Garrettsville, OH/Garfield) adds depth in the hurdles. Newcomer Allie Simmons (Fr., Toledo, OH/ Central Catholic) will compete in the 100 hurdles and also the jumps.

Swihart is the lone returnee for the 4x100 relay. New this year to the foursome most likely will be Simmons, Lewis and Elizabeth Emanuel (Fr., Hubbard, OH/Youngstown Ursuline). Emanuel was a member of the state championship 4x100 unit in high school.

SPRINTS
Two 400 meter runners will be the center of competition in the mid-sprints, with possibilities of adding to the 400 meter relay and 1600 meter relay unit. Denise Sahli (So., East Canton, OH/HS) was a state qualifier in the 400 and shows sprint qualities in the 200. Richards will help add depth to the 400 unit and bolster chances in the 4x400 relay.

DISTANCE
The Cavalier Cross Country Team (5th this fall in the AMC) helps provide the strength for the mid-distance and distance crew. Andrea DiNinno (Jr., Greensburg, PA/Central Catholic) a national qualifier last fall for the cross country team, puts in the miles to be the top distance runner and 3000 meter steeplechase specialist. Kristen LeFever (Jr., Alliance, OH/Marlington) a former national qualifier in cross country, will specialize in the mid-distance events. The 4x800 meter relay team of Megan Case (So., Louisville, OH/HS), Kristin Havens (So., Wadsworth, OH/HS), Erin Koppel (Sr., McDonald, OH/HS), and Kristin LeFever (Jr., Alliance, OH/Marlington), a national qualifying unit, returns intact. Others adding depth in the distance events will be Katie Laughlin (Fr., Malvern, OH/Canton South), Jackie Delamater (So., Uniontown, OH/Hoover), Kim Swartz (Fr., Tiffin, OH/Calvert), Rachelle Miller (Fr., Uniontown, OH/Lake) and Ashley Smith (Fr., Norwalk, OH/St. Paul).

The indoor and outdoor NAIA National Championships, the AMC Conference Championships and several invitational competitions highlight the schedule.
