"Cavaliers Celebrate the 2007 Season"

The team members, staff, and family and friends of Walsh University Volleyball celebrated the 2007 season with the annual banquet today. President Jusseaume and Athletic Director, Dale Howard, were also in attendance.

"Walsh’s Hernandez Named NAIA National Libero of the Year; Barry and Hernandez NAIA All America Honorable Mention Honor”

Walsh University’s Heather Hernandez has been named the NAIA National Libero of the Year. This is the first time in Walsh’s history that a player has earned this honor.

Hernandez is a 5-9 senior from Oakdale, California and a four-year letter winner for the Cavaliers. She earned All-American Mideast Conference South Division First Team, All-Region IX First Team, and AMC/Region IX Libero of the Year honors for 2007. Hernandez also earned NAIA All-America Honorable Mention for her performance this season.

Hernandez helped Walsh to a 29-9 record and a final NAIA National Ranking of 23rd. She led the Cavaliers with 863 digs, with an average of 6.74 digs per game, while also added 41 service aces. Hernandez finished ranked 16th in the nation in digs per game. Heather’s 863 digs in 2007 ranks second in Walsh history for digs in a single season and second in Walsh history for digs per game in a single season (6.74). Hernandez finished her career ranked third in total digs with 2085 and 10th in service aces with 148. Hernandez finished her career with an overall record of 111-37 as a Cavalier.

Head Coach, Krista Singleton, states about Hernandez, “For Heather to receive this honor is such a tremendous accomplishment. This is the highest honor a libero can be awarded, and for coaches to recognize her for her talent is nothing short of amazing. Heather has worked extremely hard for four years at Walsh and I am very proud of her. She definitely deserves this honor. To watch Heather progress into the best player she could become is something that a coach only dreams of. She became a tremendous leader for our team and was a key part to the great success of our program.”

Co-Captain Jill Barry (5-5, Sr., Salem, OH/HS) was also named NAIA All America Honorable Mention. Barry led the Cavalier offense with 1815 assists, for an average of 14.2 assists per game. Her 1815 assists in a single season ranks sixth in Walsh history and her 14.2 assists per game tops her 14.13 assists per game in 2006, which ranks her first in Cavalier history. Barry finished her career with 6730 assists (second in Walsh history), 1098 digs, and 158 service aces (seventh in Walsh history). Barry also earned All-AMC South Division First Team, Region IX First Team, and AMC/Region IX Setter of the Year awards for this season.

"MVNU Ends Cavs' Season"

(Mount Vernon, OH) Mount Vernon Nazarene (38-2) earned a berth in the AMC/NAIA Region IX Tournament championship match for the third time in school history as the Lady Cougars defeated Walsh (29-9) in four games today (22-30, 27-30, 30-27, 26-30).  Shena Beheler led the way for MVNU with 23 kills, four blocks, and 20 digs.  Audrey Hickinbotham and Courtney Springer pounded 14 and 13 kills respectively with Springer adding 15 digs and a career-high nine blocks.  Jackie Albrecht registered nine kills, 10 blocks, and 16 digs, while Tiffany Milburn posted 24 digs.  Kaylin Austen also handed out 53 assists.  Walsh (29-9) was led by Erica Parker (6-0, Jr., Concord, OH/Mentor) and Megan McDonald (5-10, Jr., Kirkland, IL/Rockford Lutheran) with 16 kills apiece, while Megan Kelly (5-10, Fr., Brook Park, OH/Holy Name) smashed 12 kills.  Heather Hernandez (5-9, Sr., Oakdale, CA/HS) and Ashley Yuhas (5-9, Fr., Elyria, OH/HS) tallied 32 and 27 digs respectively, and Jillian Barry (5-6, Sr., Salem, OH/HS) handed out 62 assists.

"Cavs Split, Advance to AMC/NAIA Region IX Semifinals"

Walsh (29-8) kept its dream alive of advancing to the NAIA National Tournament alive, by splitting their two pool matches today and advancing to the semfinals on Saturday.  After falling to Cedarville University (24-11) in five games (24-30, 25-30, 30-25, 30-22, 10-15), Walsh kept its season alive with a three-game sweep (30-20, 30-15, 30-19) of Notre Dame College (21-14).  The Cavs meet host Mount Vernon Nazarene (37-2) at 11 am on Saturday, with the winner meeting the winner of the Cedarville (24-11)/Malone (22-17) match at 6:30 pm for the NAIA National Tournament berth.  Cedarville and Malone are scheduled for a 1 pm start.

Megan McDonald (5-10, Jr., Kirkland, IL/Rockford Lutheran) led the Cavs with 26 kills in the Cedarville match.  Jill Barry (5-6, Sr., Salem, OH/HS) had 71 assists, Heather Hernandez (5-9, Sr., Oakdale, CA/HS) 36 digs and three aces and Erica Parker (6-0, Jr., Concord, OH/Mentor) 4.5 blocks.  In the win over Notre Dame, Parker had 18 kills and 3.0 blocks, Barry handed out 51 assists and Hernandez had 19 digs.  Walsh and Mount Vernon split two matches during the regular season, with each team winning on their home floor.

"Walsh Earns Five on All-AMC South Teams; Setter and Libero of the Year"

Walsh has placed five players on the All-AMC South Team. Jill Barry (5-6, Sr., Salem, OH/HS) (pictured above) and Heather Hernandez (5-9, Sr., Oakdale, CA/HS) (pictured above) have both been named to the All-AMC South Division First Team. Barry has also been named the AMC South Setter of the Year. This is the second consecutive year for the honor for Barry. Hernandez has also been named the AMC South Libero of the Year.

"Cavs Sweep Player of Week Honors"

Walsh teammates Megan Kelly, Jillian Barry, and Heather Hernandez are the AMC Players of the Week in women’s volleyball for matches played on Oct. 29 through Nov. 4. The trio helped the NAIA No. 24 Cavaliers to a 3-0 week

Kelly, a 5-foot-10 freshman outside hitter from Brook Park, Ohio, is the AMC Player of the Week. In nine games played, she averaged 5.44 kills and 1.22 digs to go along with a .473 attack percentage.

Kelly opened the week with 20 kills in a three-game sweep over NAIA No. 13 Mount Vernon Nazarene which ended the Cougars’ 23-match winning streak. She added 16 kills against Shawnee State and 13 more versus Rio Grande. Both matches were AMC South Division sweeps that secured second place in the division for Walsh, 28-7 overall and 10-2 AMC.

Barry, a 5-foot-5 senior from Salem, Ohio, is the AMC Setter of the Week for the third consecutive time and the sixth overall. She averaged 14.44 assists and 3.33 digs per game in nine games played.

Barry tallied 42 assists and 11 digs against Mount Vernon Nazarene. She set up 47 assists with eight digs versus Shawnee State and 41 assists with 11 digs in the win over Rio Grande.

Hernandez, a 5-foot-9 senior from Oakdale, Calif., picked up the AMC Libero of the Week award for the fifth time. In nine games played, she averaged 7.22 digs per game, handled 50 passes without an error, and served up five aces.

Hernandez totaled 18 digs against Mount Vernon Nazarene and 22 more versus Shawnee State. She came through with 25 digs in the Rio Grande match which also featured the 2,000th dig of her career.

"Cavs Face Cedarville in AMC/Region IX Tournament Opener on Friday"

NAIA No. 24 Walsh (28-7, 10-2 AMC S) closed the regular season with three straight AMC South wins, and now prepare for the AMC/Region IX Volleyball Tournament at Mount Vernon Nazarene this weekend. Walsh earned the number two seed in "Pool B". Notre Dame College (OH) is the top seed and Cedarville University is the number three seed. Walsh opens pool play on Friday at 1:15 pm against Cedarville, then plays Notre Dame at 3:30 pm. Walsh split with Cedarville in the regular season and won at Notre Dame in five games. On Saturday, matches are scheduled for 11 am., 1 pm and the championship match at 6:30 pm.

Walsh swept American Mideast Conference South leader, and NAIA No. 13 Mount Vernon Nazarene at home last Thursday, by the scores of 30-28, 30-25 and 30-16. Jill Barry (5-6, Sr., Salem, OH/HS) led the Cavs with 42 assists and 11 digs. Heather Hernandez (5-9, Sr., Oakdale, CA/HS) had a team-high 19 digs and Megan Kelly (5-10, Fr., Brook Park, OH/Holy Name) led with 20 kills on a .461 hitting percentage. Erica Parker (6-0, Jr., Concord, OH/Mentor) had a team-high 1.5 blocks, with two service aces and seven kills. Sophomore defensive specialist, Amy Police (5-5, So., Perry, OH/HS) added 12 digs and Megan McDonald (5-10, Jr., Kirkland, IL/Rockford Lutheran) had 10.

Walsh swept Shawnee State University (30-21, 30-21, 30-21) and University of Rio Grande (30-8, 30-11, 30-12) on Saturday to end the regular season. Walsh was led by Jill Barry's 47 assists in the Shawnee State win. Heather Hernandez led with 23 digs, and Megan Kelly with 16 kills. Amy Police had a team-high four aces, and Erica Parker and Caitlin Whealy (6-2, Jr., Avon Lake, OH/HS) each added 2.5 blocks. Barry led with 41 assists and Hernandez had 28 digs in the Rio Grande win. Kelly led again with 13 kills, and Whealy had a team-high 2.5 blocks. Parker, Police, and Hernandez each had three aces.

Jill Barry leads the AMC and is second in the NAIA in assists, averaging 14.1 per game. Erica Parker leads the AMC, and is eighth in the NAIA in hitting percentage (.420). Heather Hernandez is second in the AMC, and tied for 14th in the NAIA in digs per game at 6.7.

"Cavs End Regular Season with Two Wins at Home"

No. 24 Walsh (28-7, 10-2) swept Shawnee State University and University of Rio Grande today to end the regular season. The scores against Shawnee State were 30-21, 30-21, and 30-21. Walsh was led by Jill Barry (5-5, Sr., Salem, OH/HS) with 47 assists. Heather Hernandez (5-9, Sr., Oakdale, CA/HS) led with 23 digs and Megan Kelly (5-10, Fr., Brook Park, OH/Holy Name) led with 16 kills. Amy Police (5-5, So., Perry, OH/HS) had a team-high 4 aces. Erica Parker (6-0, Jr., Concord, OH/Mentor) and Caitlin Whealy (6-2, Jr., Avon Lake, OH/HS) each added 2.5 blocks against the Bears.

In the second match of the day, Walsh swept the University of Rio Grande by the scores of 30-8, 30-11, and 30-12. Barry led with 41 assists and Hernandez had 28 digs. Kelly led again in kills with 13 and Whealy had a team-high 2.5 blocks for the match. Parker, Police, and Hernandez each had 3 aces against the Redwomen.

The Cavaliers are idle until this Friday, when they travel to Mount Vernon for the AMC/Region IX Tournament. They will play Cedarville University at 1:15pm and Notre Dame College at 3:30pm. Semifinals and finals of the tournament are set for Saturday. The winner of the tournament will represent Region IX in the NAIA National Tournament in Columbia, MO from November 28-December 1.

"Walsh Sweeps NAIA No. 13 Mount Vernon Nazarene"

No. 24 Walsh swept No. 13 Mount Vernon Nazarene tonight by the scores of 30-28, 30-25, and 30-16. The Cavaliers were led by Jill Barry's (5-6, Sr., Salem, OH/HS) 42 assists and 11 digs. Heather Hernandez (5-9, Sr., Oakdale, CA/HS) had a team-high 19 digs and Megan Kelly (5-10, Fr., Brook Park, OH/Holy Name) led with 20 kills on a .461 hitting percentage. "Cavs Back in NAIA Top 25"

After impressive wins at the Madonna University Crusader Classic last weekend, Walsh (25-7, 7-2 AMC S) moved back into the NAIA Top 25, with a 24th place ranking.  The Cavs knocked off defending national champion, and fifth ranked National American on Saturday, and powerful Madonna University.

Tomorrow night the Cavs face AMC South leader, and 13th ranked Mount Vernon Nazarene at home at 7 pm.

"Jill Barry AMC Setter of Week, Again"

For the second straight week, and fifth time this season, Walsh's Jill Barry (Sr., 5-5, Salem, OH/HS) has been named American Mideast Conference Setter of the Week. In 17 games played last week, she averaged 13.76 assists and 3.47 digs per game.

Barry handed out 38 assists as Walsh swept NAIA No. 5 National American at the Madonna Classic. She had a high of 71 assists against the host Crusaders and added 50 in a win over AMC South foe Ohio Dominican. The Cavaliers, 25-7 overall and 7-2 AMC, went 3-2 on the week which included a loss to No. 4 Biola.

Walsh is home to AMC leader, Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Thursday at 7 pm in a South Division match-up.

"Cavs Play Well at Madonna, Stun Defending National Champs/Host Mount Vernon Next"

Walsh (25-7, 7-2 AMC S) finished a big week with three wins in five matches, as they prepare for a showdown with American Mideast Conference South leader Mount Vernon Nazarene (34-1, 10-1 AMC S), at home on Thursday (7 pm).  The Cavs downed Ohio Dominican University in a conference match, and then went to the Madonna University Crusader Classic over the weekend, where they split four matches.  The Cavs played extremely well against highly ranked competition over the weekend and upset defending national champion National American on Saturday.

Walsh swept (30-20, 30-16, 30-19) Ohio Dominican University last Tuesday night.  The Cavaliers were led by Jill Barry (5-6, Sr., Salem, OH/HS) with 54 assists and Heather Hernandez (5-9, Sr., Oakdale, CA/HS) with 21 digs. Erica Parker (6-0, Jr., Concord, OH/Mentor) led the offense with 17 kills and a .600 hitting percentage. Parker also added 15 digs on the night.  Amy Police (5-5, So., Perry, OH/HS) chipped in a team-high two aces and 17 digs. Hilary Dattilo (5-10, Jr., Mason, OH/HS) led with 3.5 blocks and added 14 kills, with a .636 hitting percentage for the night. Megan McDonald (5-10, Jr., Kirkland, IL/Rockford Lutheran) and Caitlin Whealy (6-2, Jr., Avon Lake, OH) each added 10 kills and Megan Kelly (5-10, Fr., Brook Park, OH/Holy Name) contributed 11 kills.

Walsh fell to a pair of ranked foes at the Madonna University Crusader Classic on Friday.  Walsh lost in five games (24-30, 27-30, 30-27, 30-20, 15-17) to 27th ranked Madonna in their first match.  In their second match, the Cavs were swept by NAIA No. 4 Biola University by the scores of 22-30, 27-30 and 24-30.  Megan Kelly, the AMC Player of the Week, paced the Cavs with 29 kills in the Madonna match.  Jill Barry, the AMC Setter of the Week, handed out 77 assists, Heather Hernandez, the AMC Defensive Player of the Week, had 23 digs and Hilary Dattilo (5-10, Jr., Mason, OH/HS) 5.5 blocks.  In the Biola match, Megan McDonald led with 10 kills, Barry dished out 37 assists and Hernandez had 29 digs.

Saturday was a much better day for the Cavs at Madonna.  Not only did they stop a modest two-game losing streak, but they defeated NAIA No. 5, and defending national champion National American University in their second match of the day.  In the Cavs opening match, they swept University of Michigan-Dearborn.

Megan Kelly and Megan McDonald each had 11 kills in the UMD sweep (30-13, 30-21, 30-17).  Jill Barry handed 38 assists and Heather Hernandez had 30 digs.  Walsh then swept the defending champs by the scores of 30-24, 30-28 and 30-27.  Kelly, who made the all-tournament team, paced the Cavs with 16 kills.  Barry dished out 38 assists and Hernandez had 26 digs and five aces.

Jill Barry leads the AMC and the NAIA in assists, averaging 14.2 per game.  Erica Parker leads the AMC, and is sixth in the NAIA in hitting percentage (.436).  Heather Hernandez is second in the AMC, and 16th in the NAIA in digs per game at 6.6.

"Cavs Sweep UMD, Stun Defending National Champs in Three"

It was a good day for the Walsh University Volleyball team.  Not only did they stop a modest two-game losing streak, but they defeated NAIA No. 5, and defending national champion National American University in their second match of the day.  In the Cavs opening match, they swept University of Michigan-Dearborn.

AMC Player of the Week Megan Kelly (5-10, Fr., Brook Park, OH/Holy Name) and Megan McDonald (5-10, Jr., Kirkland, IL/Rockford Lutheran) each had 11 kills in the UMD sweep (30-13, 30-21, 30-17).  AMC Setter of the Week Jill Barry (5-6, Sr., Salem, OH/HS) handed out 38 assists and AMC Defensive Player of the Week Heather Hernandez (5-9, Sr., Oakdale, CA/HS) had 30 digs. 

Walsh then swept the defending champs by the scores of 30-24, 30-28 and 30-27.  Kelly, who made the all-tournament team, paced the Cavs with 16 kills.  Barry dished out 38 assists and Hernandez had 26 digs and five aces.

The Cavs host Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Thursday for an AMC South match at 7 pm. It is Costume Night against the Cougars. Best costume wins $50 cash.

"Cavs Fall to Ranked Foes at Madonna"

Walsh (23-7) fell to a pair of ranked foes at the Madonna University Crusader Classic today.  Walsh lost in five games (24-30, 27-30, 30-27, 30-20, 15-17) to 27th ranked Madonna in their first match.  In their second match, the Cavs were swept by NAIA No. 4 Biola University by the scores of 22-30, 27-30 and 24-30.  Tomorrow, the Cavs tangle with the University of Michigan-Dearborn (12:45 pm) and NAIA No. 5 National American University (3 pm).

"Cavs Trio Sweep AMC Player of Week Honors"

Walsh teammates Megan Kelly (5-10, Fr., Brook Park, OH/Holy Name), Jill Barry (5-6, Sr., Salem, OH/HS), and Heather Hernandez (5-9, Sr., Oakdale, CA/HS) are the AMC women’s volleyball Players of the Week for matches played on Oct. 15-21. They guided the Cavaliers, 22-5 overall and 6-2 AMC South, to a pair of victories.

Kelly is the AMC Player of the Week. In 10 games played, she averaged 4.60 kills per game with a .310 attack percentage. She also contributed 22 digs, three blocks, and one service ace.

Kelly hammered a career-high 25 kills in a five-game win versus Cedarville to avenge a loss earlier in the season to the Yellow Jackets. The outcome keeps Walsh in the AMC South Division title chase. She also totaled 21 kills with a career-high 17 digs in a five-game victory at AMC North Division leader Notre Dame.

Barry is the AMC Setter of the Week for the fourth time this season. She swept the award during the first three weeks this fall.

Barry averaged 14.70 assists and 2.60 digs in 10 games played. Her performance included 77 assists in the win over Notre Dame which matched her career high. She added 70 assists in the victory against Cedarville.

Hernandez has been selected the AMC Libero of the Week for the fourth time. She averaged 6.90 digs in 10 games played.

Hernandez tallied 36 digs against Cedarville and 33 more versus Notre Dame. She handled 69 of 73 passes for a .945 accuracy

"Cavs Sweep Panthers At Home"

The Cavaliers were led by Jill Barry (5-6, Sr., Salem, OH/HS) with 54 assists and Heather Hernandez (5-9, Sr., Oakdale, CA/HS) with 21 digs. Erica Parker (6-0, Jr., Concord, OH/Mentor) led the offense with 17 kills and a .600 hitting percentage. Parker also added 15 digs on the night. Amy Police (5-5, So., Perry, OH/HS) chipped in a team-high 2 aces and 17 digs. Hilary Dattilo (5-10, Jr., Mason, OH/HS) led with 3.5 blocks and also added 14 kills on a .636 hitting percentage for the night. Megan McDonald (5-10, Jr., Kirkland, IL/Rockford Lutheran) and Caitlin Whealy (6-2, Jr., Avon Lake, OH) each added 10 kills and Megan Kelly (5-10, Fr., Brook Park, OH/Holy Name) contributed 11 kills.

Walsh travels to Madonna University this weekend where they will face No. 4 Biola University, No. 6 National American, University of Michigan-Dearborn, and Madonna University. Friday's matches will be played at UM-Dearborn and Saturday's matches will be played at a local high school, due to facility issues at Madonna University.

"Cavs Rally to Defeat Notre Dame in Five Games"

(South Euclid, OH) Walsh (22-5) rallied to defeat Notre Dame College in five games tonight.   The Cavs lost game one 32-30, won game two 30-25, but then lost the third game 26-30.  Walsh then came from behind to win the match by winning game four 30-24 and game five 15-7.

Erica Parker (6-0, Jr., Concord, OH/Mentor) led the Cavs with 26 kills and 3.5 blocks. Jill Barry (5-5, Sr., Salem, OH/HS) dished out 77 assists and Heather Hernandez (5-9, Sr., Oakdale, CA/HS) had 33 digs.

The Cavs are idle this weekend.

"Walsh Defeats Cedarville in Five"

Walsh (21-5, 6-2) defeated Cedarville in five tonight in the Bump, Set, Spike Out Cancer match (see picture above). The scores against the Yellow Jackets were 30-25, 25-30, 30-25, 25-30, and 15-10. The Cavaliers were led by Jill Barry (5-5, Sr., Salem, OH/HS) (pictured above) with 70 assists and she also added 14 digs. Heather Hernandez (5-9, Sr., Oakdale, CA/HS) led the defense with 36 digs and Megan Kelly (5-10, Fr., Brook Park, OH/Holy Name) (pictured above) had a career-high 25 kills. Megan McDonald (5-10, Jr., Kirkland, IL/Rockford Lutheran) added 20 kills and 2.5 blocks. Erica Parker (6-0, Jr., Concord, OH/Mentor) had 2.5 blocks, 11 digs and 10 kills on the night. Caitlin Doon (5-6, Sr., Columbus, OH/DeSales) had 22 digs, Ashley Yuhas (5-9, Fr., Elyria, OH/HS) added 18, and Amy Police (5-5, So., Perry, OH/HS) chipped in 13. Yuhas also had a team-high 2 service aces.

The win ties Walsh with Cedarville for second place in the AMC South Division. The Cavaliers are back in action tomorrow night in a non-conference match at Notre Dame College.

"Cavaliers Win Two"

Walsh (20-5, 5-2) swept Urbana University and Indiana Tech University today in a tri-match. Walsh beat Urbana by the scores of 30-13, 30-16, and 30-15 in an AMC South match. Walsh was led by Jill Barry (5-5, Sr., Salem, OH/HS) with 44 assists and three aces. Heather Hernandez (5-9, Sr., Oakdale, CA/HS) led the defense with 18 digs and Megan Kelly (5-10, Fr., Brook Park, OH/Holy Name) led with 17 kills. Hilary Dattilo (5-10, Jr., Mason, OH/HS) and Erica Parker (6-0, Jr., Concord, OH/Mentor) also added 10 kills each. Dattilo also had a team-high 2.5 blocks against the Blue Knights. Defensive specialist, Amy Pollice (5-5, So., Perry, OH/HS) also added 3 service aces.

In the second match of the day for the Cavaliers, Walsh swept Indiana Tech by the scores of 30-26, 30-22, and 30-27. Barry led with 45 assists and 3 service aces. Megan McDonald (5-10, Jr., Kirkland, IL/Rockford Lutheran) had a team-high 12 kills with Kelly right behind with 11. Parker also added 10 kills and 3.5 blocks. Caitlin Whealy (6-2, Jr., Avon Lake, OH/HS) had 3.5 blocks.

Walsh is idle until Wednesday, when they host Cedarville University for a conference match at 7pm. Walsh is raising money for the Breast Cancer Foundation. Fans are encouraged to support the foundation and fundraiser with the Cavaliers by purchasing the pink "Bump, Set, Spike Out Cancer" shirts that will be sold at the game. "Cavs Fall in Three at Mount Vernon"

(Mount Vernon, OH) Walsh (18-5, 4-2 AMC S) lost in three straight games to NAIA No. 23 Mount Vernon Nazarene University (20-2, 7-0 AMC S) tonight.  The AMC South leading Cougars bested the Cavs 30-24, 30-21 and 30-26. 

Erica Parker (6-0, Jr., Concord, OH/Mentor), Megan Kelly (5-10, Fr., Brook Park, OH/Holy Name) and Caitlin Whealy (6-2, Jr., Avon Lake, OH/HS) led the Cavs with 10 kills each.  Jill Barry (5-6, Sr., Salem, OH/HS) dished out 38 assists and had two aces.  Heather Hernandez (5-9, Sr., Oakdale, CA/HS) had 21 digs and Megan McDonald (5-10, Jr., Kirkland, IL/Rockford Lutheran) had 1.5 blocks.

On Saturday, Walsh will Indiana Tech (11 am) and Urbana University (10-10, 3-3 AMC S) on Saturday (3 pm) in a tri-match.

"Cavs Wins 2/3, Singleton Wins 100th Career Match"

NAIA No. 19 Walsh (18-4, 4-1 AMC S) won two out of three matches this past week. They swept arch-rival Malone College in a non-conference match on Tuesday, bested Ohio Dominican University in five games in an American Mideast Conference South match on Thursday, but then lost their first AMC South match, in four games at Cedarville University on Saturday.  This week, the Cavs face AMC South leader Mount Vernon Nazarene University (20-1, 6-0 AMC S) on the road on Thursday, then host Indiana Tech (11 am) and Urbana University (10-10, 3-3 AMC S) on Saturday (3 pm) in a tri-match.

Walsh swept rival Malone College 30-27, 30-26, and 30-12, at home on Tuesday night.  Walsh was led by Jill Barry's (5-6, Sr., Salem, OH/HS) 36 assists and 11 digs.  Heather Hernandez (5-9, Sr., Oakdale, CA/HS), had a team-high 20 digs and two service aces. Megan McDonald (5-10, Jr., Kirkland, IL/Rockford Lutheran) and Hilary Dattilo (5-10, Jr., Mason, OH/HS) led the offensive attack with 11 kills each. Junior middle blocker, Erica Parker (6-0, Jr., Concord, OH/Mentor) had a team-high two blocks and two service aces, while Caitlin Doon (5-6, Sr., Columbus, OH/DeSales) also added two service aces and 10 digs.

Walsh won its eighth straight match, defeating Ohio Dominican University in five games in an AMC South Division road contest on Thursday.  The win was also career win number 100 for Head Coach Krista Singleton.  After winning games one and two, 30-24 and 30-28, Ohio Dominican evened the match with wins in games three (30-18) and four (30-26).  Walsh then won then 15-6 in the deciding game.  Erica Parker and Megan McDonald led the Cavs with 21 kills each, with Hilary Dattilo adding 18 kills.  AMC assist leader, Jill Barry dished out a career-high 77 assists and Heather Hernandez had 33 digs.  Parker and Caitlin Whealy (6-2, Jr., Avon Lake, OH/HS) each had two blocks.

"Cavs Win 8th Straight/Career Win No. 100 For Singleton"

(Columbus, OH) NAIA No. 19 Walsh (18-3, 4-0) won its eighth straight match, defeating Ohio Dominican University in five games in an American Mideast Conference South Division contest tonight.  The win was also career win number 100 for Head Coach Krista Singleton.

After winning games one and two, 30-24 and 30-28, Ohio Dominican evened the match with wins in games three (30-18) and four (30-26).  Walsh then won then 15-6 in the fifth and deciding game.  Walsh, who is tied for the AMC South lead with Mount Vernon Nazarene, was paced by Erica Parker (6-0, Jr., Concord, OH/Mentor) and Megan McDonald (5-10, Jr., Kirkland, IL/Rockford Lutheran), who each had 21 kills.  Hilary Dattilo (5-10, Jr., Mason, OH/HS) added 18 kills.  AMC assist leader, Jill Barry (5-6, Sr., Salem, OH/HS), dished out a career-high 77 assists and Heather Hernandez (5-9, Sr., Oakdale, CA) had 33 digs.  Parker and Caitlin Whealy (6-2, Jr., Avon Lake, OH/HS) both led with two blocks.

"Walsh Moves Up One Spot in National Rankings"

Walsh (17-3, 3-0) has moved up one spot this week in the NAIA National Poll. The Cavaliers move to No. 19 in the rankings.  The Cavs received 94 votes. 

Walsh takes a seven-game win streak to Ohio Dominican University tomorrow for an AMC South Divivsion match at 7pm. Head coach, Krista Singleton, and seniors, Heather Hernandez, Jill Barry, and Caitlin Doon, look to win their 100th match as a Cavalier against the Panthers.

"Cavs Sweep Malone"

"Third Commitment for Cavaliers"

The Cavaliers and head coach, Krista Singleton, have received their third commitment for the recruiting class of 2008. Kristen Rohlfs, a 5-8 defensive specialist, from CIncinnati, Ohio, has made a verbal commitment to continue her athletic and academic career at Walsh University in the fall of 2008. Rohlfs currently attends Mount Notre Dame and is a member of the nationally-ranked volleyball team. Mount Notre Dame also won the State Championship in 2006.

Rohlfs will sign a NAIA National Letter of Intent in the future.

"Cavaliers Receive Second Commitment for 2008 Class"

Walsh University and the Cavaliers received their second commitment for the 2008 class. Jamie Kapferer has made a verbal commitment to attend Walsh University in the fall of 2008. Kapferer is a 5-11 middleblocker from Jefferson, Ohio and currently attends Sts. John and Paul High School in Ashtabula.

Kapferer will sign a NAIA National Letter of Intent in the near future.

NAIA No. 20 Walsh (16-3, 3-0 AMC S) won its sixth straight match, sweeping the University of Rio Grande in three straight games today, in an American Mideast Conference South Division match.  Walsh won 30-19, 30-20 and 30-20.  Walsh is home to rival Malone College, in an AMC South match on Tuesday night at 7 pm.

"Cavs Remain Unbeaten in AMC South"

(Portsmouth, OH) NAIA No. 20 Walsh remained unbeaten in American Mideast Conference South Division play, by blanking Shawnee State University 30-27, 30-20 and 30-23 tonight.  The Cavs are 15-3 overall, and 2-0 in the AMC South.  The Cavs will play at the University of Rio Grande at 11 am on Saturday.

"Cavaliers Move Up One Spot in National Rankings"

The Cavaliers (14-3, 1-0) have moved up one spot in the NAIA National Rankings this week. Walsh has moved up to No. 20 and received 99 votes for the week of September 24.

Walsh travels to Shawnee State University this Friday for a conference match at 7pm against the Bears. The Cavs then take on Rio Grande at 11am on Saturday in Rio Grande, Ohio.

"Heather Hernandez Named AMC Libero of the Week"

Walsh’s Heather Hernandez has been named the AMC Libero of the Week in women’s volleyball for matches played on Sept. 17-23.  This is the third time that Hernandez has been selected.

Hernandez, a 5-foot-9 senior from Oakdale, Calif., earned the honor for the third time this season. She was named MVP of the Indiana Tech Tournament upon leading the NAIA No. 21 Cavaliers to a 4-0 showing and the tournament title.

In 14 games played, Hernandez averaged 6.64 digs per game with three service aces. She also handled 79-of-84 passes for a .940 accuracy.

Hernandez totaled a career-high 40 digs in a five-game win versus host Indiana Tech. Walsh, 14-3 overall and 1-0 AMC, also posted three-game sweeps over Taylor, Michigan-Dearborn, and Saint Xavier.

"Cavaliers Win Indiana Tech Tournament; Parker All-Tournament Team and Hernandez Earns MVP"

No. 21 Walsh (14-3, 1-0) won four straight matches this weekend to win the Indiana Tech Tournament. The Cavaliers defeated (RV) Taylor University and University of Michigan-Dearborn on Friday. The Cavaliers defeated the Taylor Lady Trojans by the scores of 30-21, 30-18, and 30-26. Walsh was led by Jill Barry (5-5, Sr., Salem, OH/HS) with 41 assists. Heather Hernandez (5-9, Sr., Oakdale, CA) led the defense with a team-high 20 digs while Erica Parker had a team-high 10 kills, 4 service aces, and 2.5 blocks. Hilary Dattilo (5-10, Jr., Mason, OH/HS) also added 9 kills on a .600 hitting percentage.

Against Michigan-Dearborn, Barry dished out 42 assists and added 13 digs. Hernandez led the defense with 18 digs. The duo outside hitters of Megan Kelly (5-10, Fr., Brook Park, OH/Holy Name) and Megan McDonald (5-10, Jr., Kirkland, IL/Rockford Lutheran) led the offense with 14 kills apiece. Defensive specialist, Caitlin Doon (5-7, Sr., Columbus, OH/DeSales) added 10 digs. The Cavaliers defeated UMD by the scores of 30-21, 30-23, 30-28.

On Saturday, Walsh defeated Indiana Tech in a marathon match by the scores of 30-23, 21-30, 30-23, 27-30, and 15-13. Barry had 55 assists and a career-high 24 digs. Hernandez also had a career match with 40 digs. The offense was led by Erica Parker (6-0, Jr., Concord, OH/Mentor) with 11 kills, Caitlin Whealy (6-2, Jr., Avon Lake, OH/HS) with 10, McDonald with 14, and Dattilo had a team-high 17 kills. Sophomore defensive specialist, Amy Police (5-5, So., Perry, OH/HS) added 17 digs while Parker also added 4 service aces and 5 blocks.

In the last match of the weekend, Walsh defeated Saint Xavier University by the scores of 30-26, 30-19, and 30-21. Barry had 33 assists, 10 digs, and 3 service aces. Hernandez had a team-high 17 digs and McDonald contributed a team-high 12 kills.  Parker added 8 kills on a .500 hitting percentage, 13 digs and 2 blocks.

The Cavaliers travel to Shawnee State University on Friday, September 28 for their second conference match of the year. Walsh will then take on the Redwomen of Rio Grande on Saturday, September 29th.

"Barry Earns AMC Honor for Third Consecutive Week"

Jill Barry (5-6, Sr., Salem, OH/HS) (pictured top) earned AMC Setter of the Week for the week of September 10-16. This is the third consecutive week Barry has earned the honor. Barry dished out 167 assists for an average of 13.9 per game for four matches. She also added 13 kills, 7 service aces, and 37 digs on the week.

"Cavs Split Final Two Matches at Olivet Nazarene/McDonald, Barry Named to All-Tourney Team"

NAIA No. 16 Walsh (10-3) split its final two matches at the Olivet Nazarene Homestead Classic today.  The Cavs downed Olivet Nazarene 30-27, 30-17 and 30-28, but were then defeated by Campbellsville 28-30, 28-30 and 22-30. 

Megan McDonald (5-10, Jr., Kirkland, IL/Rockford Lutheran) paced the Cavs with 14 kills in the win against Olivet.  AMC Setter of the Week Jill Barry (5-5, Sr., Salem, OH/HS) dished out 42 assists, with 11 digs and four aces, while AMC Libero of the Week Heather Hernandez (5-9, Sr., Oakdale, CA/HS), led the defense with 28 digs.  Erica Parker (6-0, Jr., Concord, OH/Mentor) and Megan Kelly (5-10, Fr., Brook Park, OH/Holy Name) each had 3.5 blocks and Hilary Dattilo (5-10, Jr., Mason, OH/HS) added 10 kills.

McDonald and Kelly paced the Cavs with 12 kills each in the loss to Campbellsville.  Barry dished out 34 assists, Parker added two blocks and two aces, while Hernandez had a team-high 24 digs.

Megan McDonald and Jill Barry were both named to the All-Tournament Team.

NAIA No. 16 Walsh improved to 9-2 after defeating Spring Arbor College at the Olivet Nazarene Homestead Classic today. "Barry, Hernandez AMC Volleyball Players of the Week"

Walsh setter Jillian Barry, and Walsh libero Heather Hernandez have been chosen the AMC Volleyball Players of the Week for matches played on Sept. 3-9.have been chosen the AMC Volleyball Players of the Week for matches played on Sept. 3-9.

Barry, a 5-6 senior from Salem, Ohio, earned AMC Setter of the Week honors for the second straight time. She averaged 14.40 assists and 4.07 digs per game in 15 games played. Barry added 10 kills, three services, and two blocks. The NAIA No. 14 ranked Cavaliers went 4-1 on the week and finished second at the Mount St. Joseph Tournament. Their lone setback was to NCAA Division III No. 8 Carthage.

Hernandez, a 5-9 senior from Oakdale, Calif., is a repeat selection as the AMC Libero of the Week. In 15 games played, she averaged 7.07 digs per game. Hernandez recorded a .923 passing percentage with 10 errors in 130 attempts and she totaled eight service aces.

"Cavs (7-2) Finish Second at College on Mount Saint Joseph Invitational"

NAIA No. 14 Walsh (7-2) won three out of four matches last week, and placed second at the College of Mount Saint Joseph Invitational. This week, the Cavs open defense of their American Mideast Conference South Division regular season championship, when they travel to Urbana University on Tuesday. On Friday and Saturday, the Cavs play at the Olivet Nazarene University Tournament.

Walsh University swept Mount Union College on Tuesday night by the scores of 30-25, 30-28, and 30-19. The Cavaliers were led by Caitlin Whealy (6-2, Jr., Avon Lake, OH/HS) with 10 kills and a .474 hitting percentage. Senior libero Heather Hernandez (5-9, Sr., Oakdale, CA/HS) led the defense with a career-high 32 digs and two service aces. Jill Barry (5-5, Sr., Salem, OH/HS) had 42 assists and 14 digs, while Erica Parker (6-0, Jr., Concord, OH/Mentor) added 2.5 blocks. Defensive specialist Amy Police (5-5, So., Perry, OH/HS) had a team-high four service aces and also contributed 10 digs.

Walsh improved to 6-1 after defeating Otterbein College and Mount Saint Joseph College, at the Mount Saint Joseph Tournament on Friday. The Cavs downed Otterbein's Cardinals 30-11, 35-33 and 30-19 and host MSJ 30-16, 30-25, and 30-22. Megan McDonald (5-10, Jr., Kirkland, IL/Rockford Lutheran) paced the Cavs with 16 kills, five blocks and three aces in the Otterbein win. Jill Barry dished out 38 assists and had 14 digs. Heather Hernandez led the defense 23 digs, Erica Parker had 5.5 blocks and 10 kills, while Megan Kelly (5-10, Fr., Brook Park, OH/Holy Name) added 10 kills. In the Mount Saint Joseph win, Caitlin Whealy paced the Cavs with 13 kills, with McDonald adding 12. Barry handed out 45 assists, Kelly and Parker had three aces, Amy Police had a team-high 12 digs, while Hilary Datillo (5-10, Jr., Mason, OH/HS) had 2.5 blocks.

Walsh swept Geneseo State on Saturday morning by the scores of 30-20, 30-22, and 30-10. The Cavaliers' offense was led by Jill Barry’s 44 assists. Barry also added 14 digs. Heather Hernandez had a team-high 29 digs and four service aces. Erica Parker hit .541 with 15 kills, while also adding 14 digs. Megan Kelly contributed 12 kills and 12 digs. Walsh then lost in three straight games to NCAA III No. 8 Carthage College in the championship match of the tournament. The Cavs were bested 28-30, 17-30 and 36-38. Megan McDonald paced the Cavs with 17 kills, Jill Barry dished out 47 assists, Heather Hernandez had a team-high 18 digs, Erica Parker had two blocks and Amy Police had two aces. "Cavs Fall in Three in Tourney Title Match; Kelly and McDonald Named to All-Tournament Team"

NAIA No. 14 Walsh (7-2) lost in three straight games to NCAA III No. 8 Carthage College in the championship match of the Mount Saint Joseph Tournament today.  The Cavs were bested 28-30, 17-30 and 36-38. 

Megan McDonald (5-10, Jr., Kirkland, IL/Rockford Lutheran) paced the Cavs with 17 kills, Jill Barry (5-5, Sr., Salem, OH/HS) dished out 47 assists, Heather Hernandez (5-9, Sr., Oakdale, CA/HS) had a team-high 18 digs, Erica Parker (6-0, Jr, Concord, OH/Mentor) had two blocks and Amy Police (5-5, So., Perry, OH/HS) had two aces.  Megan Kelly (Fr., 5-10, Brook Park, OH/Holy Name) also added 15 digs.

The outside duo of Megan Kelly (pictured top righ) and Megan McDonald (pictured top right) were named to the Mount Saint Joseph All-Tournament Team. Kelly finished the weekend with 41 kills (3.4kills/game) and 49 digs. She had a hitting average of .277 and also added 6 service aces and 4 blocks. McDonald had a team-high 54 kills (4.5kills/game) on a .242 hitting percentage. Megan also added 3 service aces, 19 digs, and 7.5 blocks on the weekend.

"Walsh Sweeps Geneseo State"

NAIA No. 14 Walsh (7-1) swept Geneseo State this morning by the scores of 30-20, 30-22, 30-10. The Cavaliers' offense was led by Jill Barry (5-5, Sr., Salem, OH/HS) with 44 assists. Barry also added 14 digs. Heather Hernandez (5-9, Sr., Oakdale, CA/HS) had a team-high 29 digs and 4 service aces. Junior middleblocker, Erica Parker (6-0, Jr, Concord, OH/Mentor) hit .541 with 15 kills and also added 14 digs, while Megan Kelly (5-10, Fr., Brook Park, OH/Holy Name) contributed 12 kills and 12 digs.

The Cavaliers will play in the championship match at 4pm against Carthage College (IL).

Walsh University (3-1) are ranked No. 14 in the latest NAIA National Poll. The Cavaliers move down one spot from the preseason poll.

"Cavs Sweep AMC Player of Week Honors"

Walsh (3-1) has swept the American Mideast Conference Player of the Week honors for the first week of the season.   Jill Barry (5-5, Sr., Salem, OH/HS) was tabbed Setter of the Week, Megan McDonald (5-10, Jr., Kirkland, IL/Rockford Lutheran) Offensive Player of the Week and Heather Hernandez (5-9, Sr., Oakdale, CA/HS) Defensive Player of the Week. 

Barry handed out 166 assists, averaging 13.83 assists per game, 2.58 digs per game, while also adding .25 service aces per game at the Roberts Wesleyan Tournament, where she was named to the All-Tournament Team. McDonald hit .281 with 50 kills in the four matches, averaging 4.2 per game and also added 15 digs.  Hernandez recorded 74 digs, with an average of 6.17 per game and also contributed 6 service aces.

"Cavs Improve to 3-1 With Sweep, Barry Named to All-Tournament Team"

NAIA No. 13 Walsh (3-1) improved its win streak to three games, with wins over Roberts Wesleyan and the University of Saint Francis (IN) today.  The Cavs beat Roberts Wesleyan 30-12, 30-25, 30-12 and Saint Francis 33-31, 30-16, 30-22. 

Megan McDonald (5-10, Jr., Kirkland, IL/Rockford Lutheran) paced the Cavs with 13 kills, with Megan Kelly (Fr., 5-10, Brook Park, OH/Holy Name) adding 12.  Jill Barry (5-5, Sr., Salem, OH/HS) dished out 44 assists, Heather Hernandez (5-9, Sr., Oakdale, CA/HS) had 17 digs and Erica Parker (Jr., 6-0, Concord, OH/Mentor) had three blocks against Roberts Wesleyan.  In the three-game sweep of Saint Francis, McDonald paced the team with 17 kills, Barry handed out 45 assists, Hernandez had 17 digs and two aces and Parker had two blocks.

Jill Barry was named to the All-Tournament Team after handing out 166 assists, averaging 13.83 assists per game, 2.58 digs per game and also adding .25 service aces per game, for the weekend.

"Cavs Split at Roberts Wesleyan"

NAIA No. 13 Walsh (1-1) split their first two matches at the Roberts Wesleyan Tournament today.  The Cavs lost to NAIA No. 8 Azusa Pacific (27-30, 16-30, 25-30), then defeated Virginia Intermont in three games (30-14, 30-27, 30-20).

Freshman Megan Kelly (5-10, Brook Park, OH/Holy Name) paced the Cavs with 11 kills against Azusa, with Megan McDonald (5-10, Jr., Kirkland, IL/Rockford Lutheran) adding 10.  Senior setter Jill Barry (5-5, Salem, OH/HS) dished out 33 assists against Azusa and 44 against Intermont.  Heather Hernandez (5-9, Sr., Oakdale, CA/HS) led the Cavs with 20 digs against Azusa and 26 against Intermont.  Caitlin Whealy (6-2, Jr., Avon Lake, OH/HS) paced the Cavs with 12 kills in the Intermont win.

Cavs Open 30th Season on the Road

NAIA No. 13 Walsh opens its 30th season on the road this weekend, when they participate in the Roberts Wesleyan Invitational. Fourth year Head Coach Krista Singleton (82-28) returns 10 letter winners and five starters from Walsh's 35-3, American Mideast Conference regular season champion and tournament championship team.  Walsh is ranked 13th in the NAIA Preseason Poll.

Walsh opens against NAIA No. 8 Azusa Pacific (CA) at 4 pm on Friday.  Walsh then meets Virginia Intermont at 8 pm.  On Saturday, the Cavs meet host Roberts Wesleyan at 10 am, and play the University of Saint Francis (IN) at 12 pm.

"NAIA Preseason Rankings Out; Cavaliers at No.13"

The preseason rankings for the NAIA were released. The Cavaliers are ranked #13 in the NAIA Preseason Poll for 2007. Walsh University finished the 2006 season ranked #16 and a 35-3 record. They return five starters and the libero from the 2006 AMC Championship team.

The Cavaliers open the season on Friday, August 31 against (No.8) Azusa Pacific University at 4:00pm at the Roberts Wesleyan Tournament in Rochester, New York.
