Athletics > 2007 Archive 2007 ArchiveMonday, June 4, 2007 "Mahase, Webster Named All-AMC/Bossart Coach of the Year" Walsh's Stephen Webster (Jr., Lexington, OH/HS) and Dexter Mahase (Jr., La-Romaine, Trinidad), were named to the American Mideast Conference team in singles and doubles, and Head Coach Sherry Bossart was named Coach of the Year. Webster, who played first singles, finished the season with a record of 14-5. Mahase played second singles and finished a team-best 16-3. The two played first doubles and finished 14-4. Webster is a three-time AMC selection, while Mahase earned honors for the first time. Bossart led Walsh to the 11th straight AMC crown. Walsh also won the NAIA Region IX championships and advanced to the NAIA National Championships. Bossart has been named Coach of the Year 11 straight times.
Friday, May 25, 2007 "Webster, Coutts Named NAIA Daktronics Scholar-Athletes" Walsh's Stephen Webster (Jr., Lexington, OH/HS) and Andy Coutts (Sr., New Philadelphia, OH/HS) have been named Men's Tennis Daktronics Scholar-Athletes by the NAIA. Coutts was selected last year. Webster is a biology major, while Coutts majors in accounting.
Monday, May 14, 2007 "Cavs Fall 7-2 to Lee University at NAIA Nationals" (Mobile, AL) Walsh (16-4) fell 7-2 to Lee University (TN) at the NAIA National Championships today. Lee now advances to the second round, and will meet Savannah Art and Design on Tuesday at 10 am (EST) on Tuesday. Stephen Webster (Jr., Lexington, OH/HS) and Dexter Mahase (Jr., La-Romaine, Trinidad) won 9-7 at first doubles for the Cavs. Mahase was the only Cavalier to win in singles play, winning 6-3, 7-5 at second singles. Monday, May 14, 2007 "Cavs (16-3, 6-0 AMC) Meet Lee (TN) in NAIA First Round Match NAIA No. 29 Walsh meets (16-3) 10th ranked Lee University (TN) (13-4) in the first round of the single elimination NAIA National Championships, being held in Mobile, Alabama at the Mobile Tennis Center. Lee won the NAIA Region XIII Championship. The match will start 9 am on Monday (5/14). The winner will play Savannah Art and Design on Tuesday at 9 am. Wednesday, May 9, 2007 "Bracket Set for NAIA National Tournament' The brackets have been set for the 56th annual NAIA National Tennis Championships, beginning Monday in Mobile, Alabama. Walsh (16-3) meets Lee University (TN) at 9 am on Monday morning. The winner meets seventh seeded Savannah Art and Design on Tuesday at 9 am. All matches will be played at the Mobile Tennis Center.
Monday, May 7, 2007 "Cavs (16-3, 6-0 AMC) Win NAIA Region IX Title, Head to Alabama" The quest is complete for the Cavs (16-3, 6-0 AMC). After falling in the NAIA Region Championship match to Cedarville University last spring, Walsh regained the title by defeating Tiffin University 5-4 on Friday. Walsh will now make its tenth appearance in the last eleven years at the national tournament, when they head to Mobile, Alabama (14-18) next week. The tournament bracket will be announced later this week. Walsh rolled over fourth seeded Malone College 9-0 in a semi final match on Thursday. Friday's title match was much closer, with Walsh prevailing 5-4. The Cavs won four of six singles matches and at first doubles to win the title. Number one singles player Stephen Webster (Jr., Lexington, OH/HS) enters the national tournament with 14-4 record. He is on a five-match win streak. Dexter Mahase (Jr., La-Romaine, Trinidad), who plays number two singles, is a team-best 15-3 and has also won his last five matches. The two make-up Walsh's top doubles team and have a record of 13-4. Sean Smith (Sr., Edgewater, NY/Bradenton Academy) is 14-4 at third singles. Freshman Justin Collins (Lexington, OH/HS) is 11-6 at mostly fourth singles, and Greg Kerschbaum (Jr., Elyria, OH/HS) is 14-4 at mostly fifth singles. Friday, May 4, 2007 "Cavs Edge Tiffin 5-4 to Win NAIA Region IX" (Cedarviille, OH) NAIA No. 29 Walsh (16-3) is headed back to the NAIA National Championships, after edging Tiffin University (13-9) 5-4 in the NAIA Region IX Championship match, played this morning at Cedarville University. The Cavs captured four wins in singles play to clinch a return to nationals. Walsh will make their tenth trip to nationals in the last 11 years. Their string of nine straight trips to nationals came to a halt last year, when they were upset 5-0 by Cedarville in the title match. Thursday, May 3, 2007 "Cavs Advance to Region Title Match with 9-0 Win Over Malone" (Cedarviille, OH) NAIA No. 29 Walsh (15-3) has advanced to the NAIA Region IX Championship match, after blanking Malone College (9-9) 9-0 today in a semifinal match. The Cavs will meet Tiffin University (13-8) at 9 am tomorrow for the regional championship, and trip to the NAIA National Championships, held in Mobile, AL (14-18). Wednesday, May 2, 2007 "Cavs 29th in Latest NAIA Poll" Walsh (14-3) is ranked 29th in the latest NAIA Men's Tennis Coaches Poll. The Cavs, the American Mideast Conference regular season champions, received four votes. The Cavs are the number one seed for the upcoming NAIA Region IX Tournament, which starts tomorrow at Cedarville. The Cavs meet fourth seeded Malone at 9 am. Monday, April 30, 2007 "Cavs (14-3, 6-0) Begin Trek to Re-Capture NAIA Region IX Title" After Walsh (14-3, 6-0 AMC) defeated Ohio Dominican University two weeks ago to win their 11th straight American Mideast Conference regular season championship, they had completed the first step in returning to the NAIA National Tournament. Now the Cavs enter the upcoming region tournament as the top seed, and play fourth seeded Malone College on Thursday at 9 am in a semifinal match. The regional tournament is being held at Cedarville University, where the host Yellow Jackets meet Tiffin University on Thursday, following the Walsh match. The winners meet on Friday at 9 am, for the regional title and NAIA National Tournament appearance in Mobile, Alabama, May 14-18.
