"Cavs 24th, Miss Cut for Final Round"

Walsh finished 24th, missing the cut for the final round of the NAIA National Championships, being held at the Meadowbrook Municipal Golf Course in Rapid City, South Dakota. The Cavs shot 355 today. The final round starts Friday morning. Nikka Kulasa (Fr., Amherst, OH/Amherst Steele) paced the Cavs with a 86 today for a three-day total of 270, good for a tie for 116th (94-90-86/270).

Kim Smith (Fr., Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) shot an 88 today and is tied for 79th (82-84-88/254). Katy Collins (Fr., Youngstown, OH/Ursuline) shot a 91 and is tied for 99th (81-87-91/259), Mackenzie Smith (Fr., Magnolia, OH/Canton Central Catholic) is tied for 123th (88-89-90/277) and Abbey Kimar (Fr., Canton, OH/Jackson) is 136th (99-102-92/293).

"Cavs in 23rd Place at Two Rounds"

Walsh shot a second round 360 and stand 23rd (345-360/705) after the first 36 holes of the NAIA National Championships, being held at the Meadowbrook Municipal Golf Course in Rapid City, South Dakota. The third round begins at 7:30 am on Thursday. Kim Smith (Fr., Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) paced the Cavs with an 84 today and is tied for 55th (82-84/166).

Katy Collins (Fr., Youngstown, OH/Ursuline) shot an 87 and is tied for 68th (81-87/168). Nikki Kulasa (Fr., Amherst, OH/Amherst Steele) is 122nd (94-90/184), Mackenzie Smith (Fr., Magnolia, OH/Canton Central Catholic) is tied for 124th (88-89/187) and Abbey Kimar (Fr., Canton, OH/Jackson) is 139th (99-102/201).

Walsh shot 345, 57 over par , in the first round of the NAIA National Championships, being held at the Meadowbrook Municipal Golf Course in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Katy Collins (Fr., Youngstown, OH/Ursuline) paced the Cavs with an opening round 81, nine over par. Kim Smith (Fr., Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) finished ten over with an 82. Mackenzie Smith (Fr., Magnolia, OH/Canton Central Catholic) shot an 88, Nikki Kulasa (Fr., Amherst, OH/Amherst Steele) carded a 94 and Abbey Kimar (Fr., Canton, OH/Jackson) 99.

The second round will begin Wednesday morning.

"Cavs Tee-Off Early"

Abbey Kimar (Fr., Canton, OH/Jackson) was the first Cavalier to tee-off (7:30 am) at the NAIA National Championships, being held at the Meadowbrook Municipal Golf Course in Rapid City, South Dakota. She will be followed by Mackenzie Smith (Fr., Magnolia, OH/Canton Central Catholic), Nikki Kulasa (Fr., Amherst, OH/Amherst Steele), Katy Collins (Fr., Youngstown, OH/Ursuline) and AMC Medalist Kim Smith (Fr., Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) in ten-minute increments.

"Cavs Set for NAIA Nationals"

Cavs at NAIA Nationals

The American Mideast Conference Champion Cavs (53-27) are all set for play at the NAIA National Championships, being held May 12-15 in Rapid City, South Dakota (Meadowbrook Municipal Golf Course). Walsh will be making its third trip to nationals, and first under second year Head Coach Kevin Longanecker (AMC Coach of the Year). The Cavs also appeared at nationals in 2004 and 2005. Last year, Tammy Schumacher represented Walsh as the AMC Medalist.

Heading into championship play, AMC Medalist Kim Smith (Fr., Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) leads the Cavs with an 87.8 average. Smith recorded low rounds of 82 twice, at Ohio Northern University and at Ohio Dominican University.

Katy Collins (Fr., Youngstown, OH/Ursuline) is next at 88.4, Nikki Kulasa (Fr., Amherst, OH/Amherst Steele) at 89.3, Mackenzie Smith (Fr., Magnolia, OH/Canton Central Catholic) at 91.7 and Abbey Kimar (Fr., Canton, OH/Jackson) at 95.3.

"Cavs 2nd at Ohio Cup"

Walsh finished fifth with 24 points at the 5th Annual Ohio Cup, held at Sanctuary Golf Course today. Ohio Dominican University won the event with 28 points, Malone University finished third (18 pts.) and the University of Northwestern Ohio fourth (14 pts.).

Kim Smith (Fr., Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) and Courtney Klemens (Fr., Mentor, OH/HS) won the scramble competition at three over par. Klemens was the only Cavalier to win her match play event with a score of three-up. Nikki Kulasa (Fr., Amherst, OH/Amherst Steele) and Mackenzie Smith (Fr., Magnolia, OH/Canton Central Catholic) won the alternate shot competition at even par. Katy Collins (Fr., Youngstown, OH/Ursuline) and Abbey Kimar (Fr., Canton, OH/Jackson) placed second in the best ball competition a three-plus.

"Winston Commits to Cavalier Golf"

Ashley Winston has made a commitment to continuer her athletic and academic career at Walsh University in the fall of 2009. Winston is a 5-7 senior from Twinsburg High School. Ashley is a four year letter winner, earning MVP, All-Conference First Team, Most Improved Golfer, and is a Northern Ohio Conference First Place Medalist.

Ashley is the daughter of David and Lori Winston and plans to major in Middle School Education while at Walsh University.

"Walsh Wins AMC Golf Championship/Smith Medalist"

Walsh rallied from five strokes back to capture the American Mideast Conference Championship and qualify for the NAIA National Championships, May 12-15 in Rapid City, South Dakota (Meadowbrook Municipal Golf Course).

Walsh entered the final round five strokes back of Malone University (379), after shooting 384 on Monday. Today, led by medalist Kim Smith (Fr., Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional), the Cavs shot 378, besting second place Ohio Dominican University by 13 strokes. Walsh finished at 762, Ohio Dominican 775, Malone 782, Northwestern Ohio 794 and Ursuline College 872.

Smith shot the only round under 90 in the 36-hole championships, with an 89 today, to finish at 181. Katy Collins (Fr., Youngstown, OH/Ursuline) finished tied for fourth at 188 (92+96), Nikki Kulasa (Fr., Amherst, OH/Amherst Steele) finished 12th at 198 (104+94), Mackenzie Smith (Fr., Magnolia, OH/Canton Central Catholic) was 14th at 201 (96+105) and Abbey Kimar (Fr., Canton, OH/Jackson) 19th (108+99=207).

Smith and Collins were each named first-team All-AMC. Smith is the second straight Cavalier to capture medalist honors, as Tammy Schumacher finished first last year.

Walsh Head Coach Kevin Longanecker was named AMC Coach of the Year.

"Cavs Five Strokes Back After 1st of AMC Championships"

(Lima, OH) Walsh is currently five strokes back at 379, after the first round of the American Mideast Conference Championships, hosted by the University of Northwest Ohio at Colonial Hills Golf Club in Harrod, Ohio. The final 18 holes will begin at 9 am (weather permitting) on Tuesday.

Malone University leads the pack with a 379, followed by Walsh (384), Ohio Dominican University (390), Northwestern Ohio (401), Ursuline College (458) and Notre Dame College (524). Wilberforce University as disqualified.

Walsh's Kim Smith (Fr., Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) and Katy Collins (Fr., Youngstown, OH/Ursuline) and Malone's Elena Duncan, are all tied for the lead after all three carded 92.

Walsh's Mackenzie Smith (Fr., Magnolia, OH/Canton Central Catholic) shot 96, Nikki Kulasa (Fr., Amherst, OH/Amherst Steele) 104 and Abbey Kimar (Fr., Canton, OH/Jackson) 108.

"Cavs Third at ONU Polar Bear Invitational/Smith Second"

Walsh (48-27) finished third in the six-team Ohio Northern University Polar Bear Invitational today. The Cavs shot 361 to finish ten strokes back of the host Polar Bears (351) and three strokes behind second place Wittenberg University (358). Kim Smith (Fr., Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) finished second and carded an 84 (42-42).

Other finishes: Katy Collins (Fr., Youngstown, OH/Ursuline) T-6, 88 (44-44), Nikki Kulasa (Fr., Amherst, OH/Amherst Steele) T-20, 94 (47-47), Mackenzie Smith (Fr., Magnolia, OH/Canton Central Catholic) 95 (48-47), Abbey Kimar (Fr., Canton, OH/Jackson) T-30, 97 (44-53).

"Cavs Win ODU Ice Breaker, Kulasa Medalist, Four on All-Tourney Team"

Walsh (45-25) shot a final round 338, to win the six-team Ohio Dominican University Ice Breaker by 64 strokes over second place Ohio Dominican University (739). The Cavs carded a two-day total of 675 (337-338). The University of Northwestern Ohio was third (744), Urbana University fourth (753), Capital University fifth (754) and Malone University sixth (774).

Nikki Kulasa (Fr., Amherst, OH/Amherst Steele) fired a final round 81 and was tourney medalist, with a two-day total of (84-81) 165. Kulasa was one of four Cavs to be named to the all-tournament team. Kim Smith (Fr., Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) shot 82 for a total of 167 (85-82), Katy Collins (Fr., Youngstown, OH/Ursuline) came in at 171 (83-88) and Abbey Kimar (Fr., Canton, OH/Jackson) 175 (88-87), as they joined Kulasa on the all-tourney team. Mackenzie Smith (Fr., Magnolia, OH/Canton Central Catholic) finished at 179 (85-94).

"Cavs Take 29-Stroke Lead Into Final Round at ODU"

Walsh (40-25) will take a 29-stroke into tomorrow's final round of the Ohio Dominican University Ice Breaker at the Cumberland Trail Golf Course. Tee time is scheduled for 8:30 am on Tuesday. The Cavs posted their best round of the season, by shooting 337 today. Ohio Dominican University is second (366), the University of Northwestern Ohio third (376), Capital University fourth (379), Urbana University fifth (381) and Malone University sixth (395).

Katy Collins (Fr., Youngstown, OH/Ursuline) shot an opening round 83 to lead the Cavs. Nikki Kulasa (Fr., Amherst, OH/Amherst Steele) was next at 84, Kim Smith (Fr., Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) and Mackenzie Smith (Fr., Magnolia, OH/Canton Central Catholic) each shot 85 and Abbey Kimar (Fr., Canton, OH/Jackson) 88.

"Cavs Sign Two for 2009"

Walsh University has signed two golfers for the 2009 recruiting class. Katherine Kohut and Nikki Barr have signed NAIA National Letter of Intents to attend Walsh University in the fall of 2009.

Katherine (Katie) Kohut (pictured above) is a two year letter winner from Walsh Jesuit High School. Katie was an Ashland Invitational Medalist in 2008 and was also a member of the State Championship team in 2007. Walsh Jesuit was also State Runner-Up in 2008. Katie is a member of the National Honors Society and the daughter of Joseph and Susan Kohut.

Nicole (Nikki) Barr (pictured above) is a three year varsity letter winner from Canton South High School Boy's Golf Team. Nikki took fifth in the Girls' Sectionals, was named All-Northeast Ohio Honorable Mention, and Boy's NBC Honorable Mention. Nikki is a National Honors Society member and is the daughter of John and Shondora McGrew.

"Cavs 10th at SCAD Invitational"

(Savannah, GA) Walsh (40-25) finished tenth out of a 15-team field, at the Savannah College Art & Design Invitational, played at Wilmington Island Club in Savannah, Georgia. The Cavs shot 389 today and finished with a two-day total of 755. Berry College (642) won by four strokes over Embry Riddle (646).

Mackenzie Smith (Fr., Magnolia, OH/Canton Central Catholic) tied for 49th, with a two-day total of 182 (89-93). Katy Collins (Fr., Youngstown, OH/Ursuline) tied for 56th (94-93=187), Nikki Kulasa (Fr., Amherst, OH/Amherst Steele) finished 59th (93-96=189), Kim Smith (Fr., Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) tied for 67th (90-107+197), Abbey Kimar (Fr., Canton, OH/Jackson) 76th (111-120=231) and Courtney Klemens (Fr., Mentor, OH/HS) 77th (114-122=236).

(Savannah, GA) Walsh is tenth (366) out of the 15-team field, after the first round of the SCAD Invitational in Savannah, Georgia today. Berry College leads the field with a team score of 316. Mackenzie Smith (Fr., Magnolia, OH/Canton Central Catholic) paced the Cavs with a 89. Kim Smith (Fr., Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) was next with a 90. Nikki Kulasa (Fr., Amherst, OH/Amherst Steele) fired a 93, Katy Collins (Fr., Youngstown, OH/Ursuline) 94, Abbey Kimar (Fr., Canton, OH/Jackson) 111 and Courtney Klemens (Fr., Mentor, OH/HS) 114.

"Improving Cavs Receives Votes in NAIA Poll"

Walsh's (35-16) hard work this past fall golf season has paid off, as they received votes (46) in the NAIA's Fall Rating. The 46 votes placed the Cavs 28th out of 34 teams ranked.

"Cavs 6th at Pat Clouse Invitational Invitational"

(Springfield, OH) Walsh (35-16) finished sixth at the Pat Clouse Invitational, held at the Windy Knoll Golf Course on Saturday and Sunday in Springfield, OH. Walsh finished with a 36-hole score of 691. DePauw University won with a score of 644.

Kim Smith (Fr., Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) and Katy Collins (Fr., Youngstown, OH/Ursuline) tied for 16th place, with a 168. Smith shot a couple of 84's, while Collins shot an 89 on Saturday, before bouncing back with a 79 on Sunday. Nikki Kulasa (Fr., Amherst, OH/Amherst Steele) finished tied for 34th with a 175 (86-89), Mackenzie Smith (Fr., Magnolia, OH/Canton Central Catholic) tied for 47th with a 182 (94-88) and Abbey Kimar (Fr., Canton, OH/Jackson) finished 52nd with a 185 (98-87).

"Cavs 5th at Allegheny Invitational"

(Meadville, PA) Walsh (30-11) finished fifth at the Allegheny Invitational with a score of 349. Allegheny won with a 325. The Cavs are back in action on Saturday and Sunday in Springfield, OH at the Wittenburg University Pat Clouse Invitational at Windy Knoll Golf Course.

Nikki Kulasa (Fr., Amherst, OH/Amherst Steele) finished tied for fourth with an 82 (40-42). Kim Smith (Fr., Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) tied for 13th with an 87 (44-43), Katy Collins (Fr., Youngstown, OH/Ursuline) tied for 18th with an 88 (44-44), Mackenzie Smith (Fr., Magnolia, OH/Canton Central Catholic) tied for 29th with a 92 (47-45) and Abbey Kimar (Fr., Canton, OH/Jackson) tied for 38th with a 96 (46-50). Courtney Klemens (Fr., Mentor, OH/HS) finished 44th with a 104 (54-50).

"Cavs Finish Third at ODU's Kiser Classic, Collins on All-Tourney Team"

(Pataskala, OH) Walsh (25-7) shot a two-day total of 688, and finished third at the Ohio Dominican University Kiser Classic. Wittenberg University won the tournament with a two-day total of 676, with the host Panthers finishing second (680). Walsh was six strokes back, and tied for second with ODU after the first round on Friday.

Katy Collins (Fr., Youngstown, OH/Ursuline) was named to the all-tournament team after carding a two-day score of 170 (87-83). Nikki Kulasa (Fr., Amherst, OH/Amherst Steele) also scored 170 (83-87), Abbey Kimar (Fr., Canton, OH/Jackson) (86-89) and Mackenzie Smith (Fr., Magnolia, OH/Canton Central Catholic) (87-88) each shot 175 and Kim Smith (Fr., Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) scored 178 (91-87).

"Cavs Third at Capital Invitational"

Walsh (20-5) finished third (340) at the eight-team Capital University Fall Invitational today. The University of Northwestern Ohio won in a playoff with Ohio Dominican University. UNOH and ODU each finished with a 338.

Freshman Kim Smith (Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) tied for fifth place with teammate Abbey Kimar (Fr., Canton, OH/Jackson), as each shot 84. Smith shot 41-43, with Kimar carding a 40 on the front nine and a 44 on the back nine. Katy Collins (Fr., Youngstown, OH/Ursuline) tied for ninth with an 85 (43-42), Nikki Kulasa (Fr., Amherst, OH/Amherst Steele) tied for 16th with an 87 (46-41) and Mackenzie Smith (Fr., Magnolia, OH/Canton Central Catholic) tied for 20th (41-47=88).

"Cavs Win Phipps Stark Country Memorial/Smith Medalist in Playoff"

Walsh (15-3) won the three-team Phipps Stark County Memorial, held today at Congress Lake Country Club in Hartville. The Cavs scored 370, besting Malone College and Mount Union College, who each shot 396.

Freshman Kim Smith (Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) finished as tournament medalist, after paring the second hole of a sudden death playoff. Smith shot 89, with a 43 on the back nine.

Mackenzie Smith (Fr., Magnolia, OH/Canton Central Catholic) and Abbey Kimar (Fr., Canton, OH/Jackson) each shot 93 and tied for fifth. Nikki Kulasa (Fr., Amherst, OH/Amherst Steele) finished 8th with a 95 and Katy Collins (Fr., Youngstown, OH/Ursuline) was 9th with a 96. Jera Dougherty (Fr., Louisville, OH/HS) and Courtney Klemens (Fr., Mentor, OH/HS) each shot 99 and tied for 11th.

The Cavs are at the Capital University Invitational this weekend (West Chester GC, Columbus, OH).

"Cavs Win Ohio Northern Tournament"

Walsh (13-3) set a tournament record with a team score of 338, in winning the 12-team Ohio Northern University Fall Invitational. Walsh won by five strokes over second place Ohio Northern (343).

Kim Smith (Fr., Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) paced the Cavs and tied for fourth with an 82. Katy Collins (Fr., Youngstown, OH/Ursuline) was right behind Smith, and tied for sixth with an 83. Nikki Kulasa (Fr., Amherst, OH/Amherst Steele) tied for 11th with an 86 and Abbey Kimar (Fr., Canton, OH/Jackson) tied for 13th with an 87.

The Cavs play in the Stark County Memorial Tournament on Monday.

"Cavs 4th at Weather Shortned YSU Invitational"

Walsh (2-3) finished fourth at the Youngstown State University Invitational. The Cavs played 18 holes on Sunday, with Monday's final round being cancelled due to the storms that rolled throught Ohio on Sunday evening. Walsh finished with an 18-hole score of 353. The host Penquins won the event, with a score of 313.

Nikki Kulasa (Fr., Amherst, OH/Amherst Steele) and Kim Smith (Fr., Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) each shot an 87 and tied for 20th. Mackenzie Smith (Fr., Magnolia, OH/Canton Central Catholic) fired an 88 and finished tied for 25th. Katy Collins (Fr., Youngstown, OH/Ursuline) shot 91 and finished 33rd. Abbey Kimar (Fr., Canton, OH/Jackson) tied for 39th with a 95 and Jera Dougherty (Fr., Louisville, OH/HS) shot 99 and finished 44th.
