"Groholy Honored as 2008 Daktronics-NAIA Men's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete"

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced 151 men's cross country runners have been named 2008 Daktronics-NAIA Men's Cross Country Scholar-Athletes. Walsh's Mike Groholy (Sr., Parma, OH/Valley Forge) was selected for the second consecutive year. Groholy is an education major.

A total of 80 schools were represented this season, led by Concordia (Neb.) with six selections.

Nominated by each institution's head coach, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and have achieved junior academic status to qualify.

"Cavs 5th at AMC Championships/McKee, Groholy Fail to Qualify"

Walsh (54-27) finished fifth at the American Mideast Conference Championships today at Ursuline College. Malone University won, with Cedarville University finishing second. Both teams will receive bids to the NAIA National Meet in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Brendan McKee (Sr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) paced the Cavs with a 26th place finish in a time of 28:26.8. Mike Groholy (Sr., Parma, OH/Valley Forge) was next, placing 29th (28:31.3). David Leary (Fr., Northwest, OH/Canal Fulton) finished 33rd (28:47.5), Matt Long (Jr., Mogadore, OH/Field) 39th (29:29.3), Phil Kress (Fr., Canton, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) 41st (29:42.0), Dan Opeka (Fr., Louisville, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) 42nd (29:49.4) and Jordan Johnson (So., Louisville, OH/HS) 45th (30:03.7).

"Cavs at AMC Championships on Saturday"

Walsh (46-23) is set to compete in the American Mideast Conference Championships this Saturday at Ursuline College. The championship race begins at 11 am. Walsh finished fourth last year, with Brendan McKee (Sr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) and Mike Groholy (Sr., Parma, OH/Valley Forge) placed 14th (19:54) each earning first-team honors and qualifying for the NAIA National Meet. Walsh's last team appearance at the national meet came in 1995.

"Cavs 3rd at USATF Meet at Malone"

Walsh (46-23) finished third (95) at the USATA Regional Meet held at Malone University today. Malone (18), the NAIA's number one team, won the event. NAIA ninth ranked Huntington finished second (58). Marion, 26th ranked in the NAIA placed fourth (107) and Ashland University (155) fifth. The Cavs are idle next week, in preparation for the American Mideast Conference Championship meet on November 8.

Brendan McKee (Sr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) paced the Cavs with a 10th place finish in a time of 19:44. Mike Groholy (Sr., Parma, OH/Valley Forge) placed 14th (19:54), David Leary (Fr., Northwest, OH/Canal Fulton) 25th (20:21), Jordan Johnson (So., Louisville, OH/HS) 30th (20:56), Phil Kress (Fr., Canton, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) 33rd (21:04), Matt Long (Jr., Mogadore, OH/Field) 34th (21:10) and Dan Opeka (Fr., Louisville, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) 39th (21:26).

"Cavs Capture Home Invitational/Groholy Wins"

Walsh (44-21) and Mike Groholy (Sr., Parma, OH/Valley Forge) came out winners at the six-team Walsh Invitational today. The Cavs (22 pts.) bested the field, while Groholy won the race in a time of 25:25. Walsh captured seven of the top ten places, to win the race going away. Thiel finished 2nd (61), Geneva third (72), West Liberty 4th (117), Lake Erie 5th (126) and Point Park 6th (149).

Groholy's top finish was followed by Brendan McKee's (Sr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) second place finish in a time of 25:39. David Leary (Fr., Northwest, OH/Canal Fulton) finished fourth (26:35), Jordan Johnson (So., Louisville, OH/HS) 7th (27:00), Dan Opeka (Fr., Louisville, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) 8th (27:04), Phil Kress (Fr., Canton, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) 9th (27:10) and Matt Long (Jr., Mogadore, OH/Field) 10th (27:15).

"Cavs 10th at UW-Parkside Lucian Rosa Invitational"

Walsh (39-21) finished a strong 10th at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside Lucian Rosa Invitational, held today in Kenosha, WI at the Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course. Indiana Tech (36) won the Invitational.

Walsh's (320) Mike Groholy (Sr., Parma, OH/Valley Forge) provided the best Cavalier finish (26:30), placing 18th. David Leary (Fr., Northwest, OH/Canal Fulton) finished 62nd (27:49), Brendan McKee (Sr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) 70th (27:57), Dan Opeka (Fr., Louisville, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) 82nd (28:12) and Jordan Johnson (So., Louisville, OH/HS) 88th (28:17).

Next week, the Cavs host the Walsh University Invitational at 11 am.

"Cavs, McKee Win at Rio"

Brendan McKee (Sr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) placed first (26:23.51) and Walsh (21-12) bested host Rio Grande to win the Red Storms' two-team invitational.

Mike Groholy (Sr., Parma, OH/Valley Forge) finished second (26:47.96), David Leary (Fr., Northwest, OH/Canal Fulton) sixth (27:52.47), Phil Kress (Fr., Canton, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) eighth (28:11.53), Dan Opeka (Fr., Louisville, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) ninth (28:13.67) and Matt Long (Jr., Mogadore, OH/Field) tenth (28:38.93).

"Cavs Place 8th at National Catholic Invitational"

(South Bend, IN) Walsh (19-12) finished eighth (267) in the college division at the 2008 National Catholic Cross Country Invitational, held at the University of Notre Dame today. Bellarmine University (67) placed first in the 23 team field.

Brendan McKee (Sr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) paced Walsh with 18th place finish in a time of 27:03. David Leary (Fr., Northwest, OH/Canal Fulton) was next for the Cavs, finishing 35th (27:39). Jordan Johnson (So., Louisville, OH/HS) finished 65th (28:27), Bob Fay (So., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) 73rd (28:36), Matt Long (Jr., Mogadore, OH/Field) 76th (28:39), Jon Winnyk (Sr., Strongsville, OH/Holy Name) 81st (28:48) and Dan Opeka (Fr., Louisville, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) 100th (29:39).

"Groholy Wins, Cavs 2nd in Ric Sayre Invitational"

Walsh (4-5) finished second (30) in the first-ever Ric Sayre Invitational today. John Carroll University (27) won the four-team race, which was ran in heavy rain. The College of Wooster finished third (84) and Ohio Dominican University fourth (111).

Mike Groholy (Sr., Parma, OH/Valley Forge) paced the Cavs, and won the race in a time of 26:20. Brendan McKee (Sr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) finished fourth (26:46), David Leary (Fr., Northwest, OH/Canal Fulton) sixth (27:27), Bob Fay (So., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) eighth (27:54) and Dan Opeka (Fr., Louisville, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) 11th (28:10).

"Cavs Host First Annual Ric Sayre Invitational on Saturday"

After racing in last Saturday's Alumni Run, the Cavs (2-6) return to action this Saturday in the first annual five-team Ric Sayre Invitational. Sayre earned NAIA All-American status for Walsh in 1979 and 1980 and was a US National Champion in the marathon after leaving Walsh. The race begins at 10:45 am.

"Cavs 6th at Bill Sudeck Invitational at Case Western Reserve"

Walsh (2-6) finished sixth, at the eight-team Bill Sudeck Invitational at Case Western Reserve University today. Mike Groholy (Sr., Parma, OH/Valley Forge) paced the Cavs with a 26th place finish (28:22). Brendan McKee (Sr., Akron, OH/St. Vincent-St. Mary) placed 42nd (29:07), Phil Kress (Fr., Canton, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) 43rd (29:10), Bob Fay (So., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) 55th (29:41) and Andrew Marchand (Fr., North Canton, OH/Jackson) 66th (30:04). Dan Opeka (Fr., Louisville, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) finished 73rd (30:17) and Luke Immel (So., Sugarcreek, OH/Garaway) 81st (30:50).

"Walsh University Signs Local Cross Country/Track Standouts"

Walsh University Head Men's Cross Country and Track Coach Dan McCallion has announced the signings of ten local student-athletes to continue their education at Walsh and participate in intercollegiate athletics. Walsh is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and competes in the American Mideast Conference.

Dan Bauman comes from Saint Thomas Aquinas High School, where he lettered three times in cross country and three times in track for Matt Reneker on the Knights two state championship teams. Dan was a two-time cross country regional qualifier and posted top times of 16:36 (Sr.) and 16:55 (Jr.). He also qualified for state in the 1600m and 4x800m relay in track.

Dan Bove comes from GlenOak High School, where he lettered in cross country, track, swimming and water polo.

James Gibson comes from East Canton High School, where he was fourth in the Division III State Cross Country Championships in 2007 (15:56), earning All-Ohio status. In track, he qualified for state as part of the 3200m relay team.

Cody Horner comes from Canton McKinley High School, where he lettered three times in cross country and four times in track. He was honorable mention All-Stark Country in track, while posting a top time of 2:02 in the 800m.

Jordan Johnson comes from Louisville High School and is a transfer from Kent State-Stark. He will be a sophomore. Jordan did not participate at Louisville, but ran a 15:40 5K road race.

Phil Kress comes from Saint Thomas Aquinas High School, where he lettered four times in cross country and four times in track for Matt Reneker on the Knights two state championship teams. Kress also qualified for the state meet in cross country and posted a personal best of 16:55 as a senior. In track, he posted pr's of 2:03 in the 800m as a junior and 4:42 in the mile as a senior.

David Leary comes from Northwest High School, where he placed 16th in the Division II State Cross Country Championships in 2007 (16:12), earning All-Ohio status. He was 11th at the regional meet (16:52) and was also a regional qualifier in the mile (4:26) and two-mile (9:52).

Andrew Marchand comes from Jackson High School, where he lettered twice in each cross country and track. He posted a personal best of 16:21 in cross country as a senior and 4:32 in the 1600m.

Dan Opeka comes from Saint Thomas Aquinas High School, where he lettered four times in cross country and three times in track for Matt Reneker on the Knights two state championship teams. Dan posted a personal best of 16:33 his senior year in cross country and 4:41 in the mile.

Matt Welch comes from Perry High School, where he earned four cross country letters and three track letters for Rob Mizicko. He finished second on the team on the Panthers' team that finished 7th in the state. He earned first team All-Country and second team All-Federal League honors in cross country. Matt posted a personal best of 16:40 his senior year in cross country.
