"Seven Cavs Earn All-AMC Honors; Kelly Named to AMC Rawlings Gold Glove Team"

Seven Walsh University players were selected to the All-American Mideast Conference, with one being named to the All-AMC Rawlings Gold Glove Team. The Cavs placed four players on the second team, with three earning honorable mention recognition. Junior outfielder Mark Kelly (Norton, OH/HS) received the Rawlings Gold Glove for his outstanding defensive work in left field. Kelly made just one error in 72 chances for a .986 fielding percentage. Kelly also earned honorable mention recognition, after hitting .318. Kelly was second-team choice last year and honorable mention as a redshirt-freshman.

Dustin Lancy (So., Cuyahoga Falls, OH/HS), Tyler Maag (Sr., North Canton, OH/GlenOak) Mike Suliks (Jr., Norton, OH/HS) and Duston Walter (Jr., Malvern, OH/HS) were named second-team, with Kelly, Jeff Kotlar (Fr., Euclid, OH/HS) and Steve Weirich (Jr., Minerva, OH/HS) named honorable mention.

Lancy, the Cavs designated hitter, batted .348 with nine doubles, two triples, three homeruns and 29 RBI and a team-leading .507 slugging percentage. Maag, who transferred from Southern Arkansas, played centerfield in his only year in a Walsh uniform and hit .355 with ten doubles, four homeruns and 21 RBI. He also led the team with nine stolen bases and three outfield assists. Suliks, the Cavs shortstop, led the team with a .371 average, tied for the team lead in doubles (10). triples (2), hit two homeruns and drove in 28 runs. Suliks was first-team last year and second-team his freshman year. This season he made the switch from second base to shortstop. Walter, the Cavs durable catcher, hit .304 with seven doubles and a team-leading five homeruns and 32 RBI. Walter was a first-team selection last year.

Freshman Jeff Kotlar worked as a starter and relief pitcher for the Cavs and finished with a 5-3 mark and 4.03 ERA. His five wins led the team. His three complete games also tied for the team lead, and he led the team with three saves and 16 appearances. Steve Weirich led the team with a 3.93 ERA and in innings pitched (52.2). Weirich was 4-4 and tied Kotlar and two others with three complete games.

"Cavs Add Two More to 2009 Recruiting Class"

Walsh University Baseball has added two more to the recruiting class of 2009. Ray Downs and Matt Spillman have signed a NAIA National Letter of Intent to continue their academic and athletic careers at Walsh University in the fall of 2009.

Ray Downs is a 6-3 first baseman from Chippewa High School in Doylestown, Ohio. Downs is a four year letter winner that earned Offensive Player of the Year and Conference First Team his junior and senior campaigns. Downs was also inducted into the Wayne Count Hall of Fame. Ray is the son of Bill and Shawn Downs and plans to major in education.

Matt Spillman is a shortstop/second baseman from Winston Churchill High School in Weland, Ontario, Canada. Spillman was named MVP and also given the Bulldog Award, both in baseball and basketball. Matt is the son of Neville and Sandra Spillman and plans to major in business.

"Cavs Fall Twice at Rio"

Walsh (20-26, 14-18) closed the season with at double header loss at the University of Rio Grande (34-19, 19-11) today, by the scores of 3-2 and 12-2 (6).

Tyler Maag (Sr., North Canton, OH/GlenOak) led off game one with a homerun. Walsh also added a solo homer from Rob Rose (Jr., Hudson, OH/HS) in the third to take a 2-1 lead. The Cavs and starter Steve Weirich (Jr., Malvern, OH/HS) held the 2-1 until the bottom of the seventh, when the Red Storm scored twice to win the game 3-2.

Walsh trailed 3-2 in the fifth inning of the nightcap, when the Red Storm exploded for seven runs to put the game out of reach.

"Cavs Split at Rio Grande"

Walsh (20-24, 14-16) split an American Mideast Conference double header at the University of Rio Grande (32-19, 17-11) today. The Cavs captured game one 10-6, but fell 12-2 (5) in the nightcap. The same two teams meet at Rio at 1 pm on Wednesday.

Walsh snapped a 3-3 tie with seven runs in the sixth inning in the opener. The big blow was a two-run single by Mike Suliks (Jr., Norton, OH/HS), aided by an RBI double by Dustin Lancy (So., Cuyahoga Falls, OH/HS). Suliks was one of five Cavs to have two hits, he also drove in three runs. Jeff Kotlar (Fr., Euclid, OH/HS) worked 5.2 innings to record his fifth (5-3) win of the season. Mike Muenster (So., Gates Mills, OH/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) worked the final 1.1 innings to earn his first save of the season. Rio Grande used a 10-run third inning to mercy the Cavs 12-2 in five innings in game two.

"Walsh University Baseball Adds Seven for 2009-10"

Head coach, Tim Mead, has announced the signing of eight student-athletes for the class of 2009-10. Marcus Carroll, Cameron Collum, Cody Gilliam, David Roper, Trevor Smith, Eric Stamets, and Tim Stinson are all continuing their athletic and academic careers at Walsh University in the fall of 2009.

Marcus Carroll is a 6-3 pitcher fro Lexington High School in Lexington, Ohio. Carroll earned two letters in baseball and one letter in football from Lexington. Marcus is the son of Randy and Joan Carroll and plans to major in Marketing.

Cameron Collum is a shortstop/centerfielder from North Union High School in Marysville, Ohio. Collum earned four letters and was named First Team All-Conference for two seasons. He was also the runner-up for Conference Player of the Year. Collum earned two letters in football and was named First Team All-Conference, Second Team All-Ohio, and First Team All-District. Cameron is the son of Mel and Ronda Collum and plans to major in physical therapy.

Cody Gilliam is a 6-2 utility player from Upper Sandusky High School in Upper Sandusky, Ohio. Gilliam earned three letters in baseball and three letters in basketball. He was named All-Conference Honorable Mention in basketball. Cody is the son of Don and Melissa Gilliam and is undecided on a major at this time.

David Roper is a three year letter winner from Princeton High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. Roper is a 6-2 pitcher and also earned one letter in basketball. David is the son of Emmett and Patricia Roper and plans to major in political science.

Trevor Smith is a shortstop from Holy Name High School. This 5-9 Parma, Ohio native earned two letters while at Holy Name and was named First Team All-Conference in 2008. Holy Name also earned Conference and District Champs in 2007. Trevor is the son of Donald and Kathleen Smith and is undecided on a major at this time.

Eric Stamets is a shortstop from Dublin Scioto High School in Dublin, Ohio. Stamets is also playing football at Walsh University. He earned Second Team All-Conference and Honorable mention All-District in football at Dublin Scioto. Eric is the son of Jim and Beth Stamets and plans to major in business.

Tim Stinson is a 5-10 shortstop from Marlington High School in Alliance, Ohio. Stinson is a four year letter winner at Marlington and earned Second Team All-Conference and was also named captain. He also earned two letters in football and was named Second Team All-Conference, Second Team All-County, Second Team All-District, and Honorable Mention NE Ohio. Tim is the son of Tim and Kathy Stinson and plans to major in education.

"Suliks Named AMC Player of Week"

CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Walsh shortstop Mike Suliks was named AMC Player of the Week Week for games played on April 13-19.

Suliks, a 5-foot-10 junior from Norton, Ohio/HS, batted .615 as the Cavaliers won five out of eight AMC contests. He hit safely in the last seven games including four three-hit performances.

In eight games played, Suliks was 16-for-26 at the plate with one double, two homers, and 10 runs batted in. He scored 11 runs to go along with four walks and a stolen base for Walsh.

"Cavs Fall Twice in Columbus"

Walsh (19-23, 13-15) lost both ends of an American Mideast Conference double header at Ohio Dominican University (22-14, 14-8) today, by the scores of 11-4 and 7-2. Yesterday, the Cavs won a pair from ODU at Walsh.

In game one, the Panthers erupted for five runs in the home half of the third inning to break open a close game and take an 8-2 lead. After the Cavs scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, the Panthers tallied three runs in the sixth to settle the issue. Mike Suliks (Jr., Norton, OH/HS) was 3-3 for the Cavs, and Marc Miller (So., Hudson, OH/HS) was 2-3 with a homerun. Steve Weirich (Jr., Malvern, OH/HS) started for the Cavs and suffered the loss (4-3).

In the nightcap, the Panthers erased a 2-1 Walsh lead in the bottom of the fourth inning with a six-run outburst. Suliks doubled and went 3-4 with an RBI. Chris Sunderman (Fr., Cincinnati, OH/Glen Este) started and was tagged with the loss.

"Cavs Sweep AMC Twin Bill From ODU"

Walsh (19-21, 13-13) pulled even in the American Mideast Conference with a sweep of Ohio Dominican University (20-14, 12-8) today, by the scores of 9-3 and 13-5. The same two teams meet in Columbus tomorrow for an AMC double header at 1 pm.

Jeff Kotlar (Fr., Euclid, OH/HS) pitched a complete game in the opener to improve to 4-3. Dustin Lancy (So., Cuyahoga Falls, OH/HS) hit a two out, two-run homer in the first inning to give the Cavs a 2-0 lead. After Ohio Dominican scored twice in the second to tie the game, Walsh came back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 5-2 lead. Lancy doubled in the go ahead run, another run scored on an error, and Tim Hromada (So., North Royalton, OH/Padua Franciscan) singled in the fifth run. Walsh would added two more runs in the sixth on a Mike Suliks (Jr., Norton, OH/HS) sacrifice fly and passed ball.

The Cavs used big hits and big innings to complete the sweep. Hromada's three-run double keyed a five-run third inning and put the Cavs ahead to stay at 5-4. Duston Walter (Jr., Malvern, OH/HS) then clubbed a grand slam homerun in the fourth to give the Cavs a 9-4 lead. Walter drove in five runs and Hromada four. Eric Shimko (So., Canton, OH/McKinley) started and pitched five innings to pick-up the win and improve to 2-0.

"Cavs Take Pair at Notre Dame"

(South Euclid, OH) Walsh 17-21, 11-13) swept an American Mideast Conference double header at Notre Dame College (6-32, 3-21) today by the scores of 3-1 and 12-2 (6). The Cavs are back in action tomorrow, as they host Ohio Dominican University in an AMC twin bill at 1 pm.

Mike Shaeffer (So., Waynesburg, OH/Sandy Valley) pitched a complete game five-hitter to win the opener and improve to 2-4. Shaeffer fanned six and walked only three. Rob Rose (Jr., Hudson, OH/HS) drove in the Cavs first run with a single in the second inning, and drove in an insurance run in the sixth. Mike Suliks (Jr., Norton, OH/HS) snapped a 1-1 tie in the fifth, as the singled to drive in Tyler Maag (Sr., North Canton, OH/GlenOak) who doubled.

Walsh scored four runs in the second and fourth innings, while adding two runs in the fifth and sixth. Mike Suliks hit a grand slam in the fourth. Tyler Maag went 3-4 and Marc Miller (So., Hudson, OH/HS) and Tyler Jones (Fr., Mansfield, OH/Madison) each drove in two runs.

"Cavs Again Split with Cedarville"

For the second time in three days, Walsh (15-21, 9-13) split an American Mideast Conference double header with Cedarville University (23-18, 7-11). Walsh fell 8-3 in game one, but came back to win the nightcap 5-3. Tomorrow's AMC twin bill at Notre Dame College has been postponed until Wednesday at 2 pm.

Two first inning walks came back to haunt first game starter, and loser Billy Gura (Fr., Sagamore Hills, OH/St. Peter Chanel). After Gura walked two of the first three batters, David Convertini hit a three-run homer to right field to give the Yellow Jackets a lead they would never relinquish. Walsh scored twice in the second on a two-run single by Tim Hromada (So., North Royalton, OH/Padua Franciscan), but would not score again until the bottom of the sixth. The Yellow Jackets put the game away with four runs in the fifth and one in the sixth. Gura lasted 4.1 innings and suffered the loss to fall to 3-3.

Mike Suliks (Jr., Norton, OH/HS) fifth inning single snapped a 3-3 tie in the Cavs two-run fifth in game two. Duston Walter (Jr., Malvern, OH/HS) then followed with a single for an insurance run. Walter was 3-3 with two RBI. Mark Kelly (Jr., Norton, OH/HS) also had two hits and scored twice. Steve Weirich (Jr., Malvern, OH/HS) scattered five hits and went the distance to improve to 4-2. He fanned three and did not walk a batter.

"Cavs Split With Cedarville"

Walsh (14-20, 8-12) split an American Mideast Conference double header today with Cedarville University (22-17, 6-10). The Cavs lost game one 11-5, before taking the nightcap 6-2.

Cedarville chased Walsh starter Mike Dougherty (Sr., Canton, OH/McKinley) with seven runs in the first inning, on their way to an 11-5 win. Marc Miller (So., Hudson, OH/HS) hit a two-run homer for the Cavs. In game two, Walsh used a six-run second inning to win 6-2. Mike Suliks (Jr., Norton, OH/HS) was 3-3 with two RBI. Tyler Maag (Sr., North Canton, OH/GlenOak), Duston Walter (Jr., Malvern, OH/HS) an Mark Kelly (Jr., Norton, OH/HS) each had two hits and Dustin Lancy (So., Cuyahoga Falls, OH/HS) had two RBI.

Jeff Kotlar (Fr., Euclid, OH/HS) pitched a complete game to improve to 3-3.

"Cavs Sweep"

Walsh (13-19, 7-11) took game two 4-3 from Notre Dame College (6-26, 3-15) to sweep the American Mideast Conference double header today. The Cavs are back in action on Friday, when they host Cedarville University in an AMC double header at 1 pm. The two teams also meet on Saturday (1 pm) at Walsh for another AMC twin bill.

With the Cavs trailing 2-0 in the fourth inning, Duston Walter (Jr., Malvern, OH/HS) and Duston Lancy (So., Cuyahoga Falls, OH/HS) hit back-to-back homeruns to tie the game. Tim Hromada (So., North Royalton, OH/Padua Franciscan) then drove in the final two runs with a sacrifice fly and single. Steve Weirich (Jr., Minerva, OH/HS) started and picked-up the win to improve to 3-2. Jeff Kotlar (Fr., Euclid, OH/HS) came on in the seventh inning with bases loaded and shut the door to earn his third save.

"Maag 5-5 With Six RBI in Game One Win"

Tyler Maag (Sr., North Canton, OH/GlenOak) went 5-5, with six RBI, as the Cavs (12-19, 6-11) beat Notre Dame College (6-25, 3-14) 15-5 in game one of an American Mideast Conference double header. Maag doubled and hit a three-run homer in the rout, while also scoring three times. Walsh snapped a 2-2 with four runs in the fourth inning, and then added three in the fifth and six in the sixth.

Dustin Lancy (So., Cuyahoga Falls, OH/HS) went 3-5, with a double, triple and three RBI, Duston Walter (Jr., Malvern, OH/HS) was 3-4 with two RBI and Rob Rose (Jr., Hudson, OH/HS) was 3-3 with three runs scored and two RBI. Marc Miller (So., Hudson, OH/HS) also drove in two runs. In all, the Cavs banged out 19 hits.

Billy Gura (Fr., Sagamore Hills, OH/St. Peter Chanel) pitched a complete game to earn his third win (3-2) of the season. Gura fanned five and did not walk a batter.

"Cavs Snap Skid at Mount Union"

(Alliance, OH) Walsh (11-19) snapped a three-game losing streak with a 9-6 come-from-behind win at Mount Union College today. The Cavs are back in action, at home on Tuesday, with an American Mideast Conference double header against Notre Dame College at 1 pm.

After Walsh took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, Mount Union answered with three runs in the first and two in the second to take a 5-2 lead. Walsh would trim the lead to 5-4 in the sixth and then erupt for four runs in the seventh. Duston Walter (Jr., Malvern, OH/HS) was hit by a pitch and moved up on a single by Dustin Lancy (So., Cuyahoga Falls, OH/HS). Mark Miller (So., Hudson, OH/HS) then singled to load the bases. Walsh then grabbed the lead at 6-5 when Tim Hromada (So., North Royalton, OH/Padua Franciscan) doubled home Walter and Lancy. Rob Rose (Jr., Hudson, OH/HS) then singled home Hromada, and Tyler Jablonski (Fr., Franklin, OH/HS) singled to score Rose to give the Cavs a 8-5 lead. Hromada singled home an insurance run in the eighth. Lefty Eric Shimko (So., Canton, OH/McKinley) worked seven strong innings in relief to pick-up the win. He allowed only an unearned run, while scattering four hits and fanning three.

"Cavs Drop AMC Twin Bill at Mt. Vernon"

(Mt. Vernon, OH) Walsh (10-19, 5-11) dropped both ends of an American Mideast Conference double header at Mount Vernon Nazarene University (21-8, 11-3) today, by the scores of 7-2 and 10-4.

In game one, Mount Vernon snapped a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning with five runs. Mike Dougherty (Sr., Canton, OH/McKinley) started and was tagged with the loss (1-3) in game one. Duston Walter (Jr., Malvern, OH/HS) and Dustin Lancy (So., Cuyahoga Falls, OH/HS) each had two hits. In game two, the Cougars scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 7-0 lead, and then held on to win 10-4 to complete the sweep. Jeff Kotlar (Fr., Euclid, OH/HS) was the starter and loser for Cavs, falling to 2-4. He was charged with six runs, four earned, on seven hits in four innings.

"Cavs and Cougars Split"

Walsh (10-17, 5-9) split an American Mideast Conference double header with Mount Vernon Nazarene University (19-8, 9-3) today. The Cavs snapped a five-game losing streak with a 2-1 win in the opener, before falling 11-1 in the nightcap. The same two teams play at Mount Vernon Nazarene on Saturday in a twinbill at 1 pm.

Billy Gura (Fr., Sagamore Hills, OH/St. Peter Chanel) pitched a complete game, six-hitter, to notch his second win (2-2) of the season in the opener. After MVNU scored a run to take a 1-0 in the top of the first, Walsh tied the game on a Duston Walter (Jr., Malvern, OH/HS) double in the bottom of the inning. Walsh snapped the tie with the games' final run in the home half of the third. Mike Suliks (Jr., Norton, OH/HS) drew a one out walk, advanced to second on a Walter single, and scored the winning run on a single by Mark Miller (So., Hudson, OH/HS). Miller also turned in the defensive play of the game, when he cut down the tying run at the plate from right field in the sixth. Miller threw out Michael Hendren, who was trying to score from second on a single by Jeff Estep.

Mount Vernon scored three unearned in the top of the first inning in game two, and went on to score in each of the odd innings in gaining the split. The big blow was a two-out, two-run homerun by Matt Parks, off of starter and loser Steve Weirich (Jr., Malvern, OH/HS) (2-2) in the first. Tyler Maag (Sr., North Canton, OH/GlenOak) was 3-4 with a solo homer.

"Malone Takes Two From Cavs"

Malone (21-4, 8-0) took two from the Cavs (9-16, 4-8) by identical 2-0 scores today, in an American Mideast Conference twin bill at Thurman Munson Stadium. The Cavs are home to Mount Vernon Nazarene in an AMC twin bill on Thursday at 1 pm.

Tyler Maag (Sr., North Canton, OH/GlenOak) produced Walsh's only hit in game one, when he led of the contest with a bunt single. The Cavs would not have another base runner until a walk in the seventh. Mike Dougherty (Sr., Canton, OH/McKinley) was touched for two runs in the third, in being tagged with the complete game loss.

In the nightcap, Malone scored two runs in the first inning off of Walsh starter Jeff Kotlar (Fr., Euclid, OH/HS). The Cavs managed just three singles in the loss.

"Cavs Lose 7-5 to B-W"

Walsh fell to 9-14, after losing 7-5 to Baldwin-Wallace College in a non-conference game today. The same two teams meet at B-W on Sunday in a single game.

Walsh led 2-0, when the Yellow Jackets scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning. Walsh answered with two runs in the home half of the sixth, but the Yellow Jackets matched the two-spot in the ninth.

Tyler Maag (Sr., North Canton, OH/GlenOak) had three hits for the Cavs and Mike Suliks (Jr., Norton, OH/HS) and Dustin Lancy (So., Cuyahoga Falls, OH/HS) each had two hits. Walsh used eight pitchers, with Mike Shaeffer (So., Waynesburg, OH/Sandy Valley) taking the loss in relief (1-4).

"Duston Walter AMC Player of the Week"

Walsh University catcher Duston Walter has been selected the AMC Position Player of the Week for his performance in games played on March 16-22.

Walter, a six-foot junior from Malvern, Ohio, paced Walsh to a 5-0 week by hitting .538 with a 1.385 slugging percentage. He was 7-for-13 at the plate with two doubles, three homers, and nine RBI's. Walter walked six times and scored five runs.

Walsh finished the week with a four-game AMC series sweep over Point Park.

The Cavs are home to Baldwin-Wallace College for a single game 4 pm tomorrow.

"Malone Completes Sweep"

Malone (15-4, 2-0) completed an AMC sweep of Walsh (9-13, 4-6), winning game two 8-6. AMC Player of Week Duston Walter (Jr., Malvern, OH/HS) gave Walsh a 1-0 lead with a single in the first. Malone would then score four runs in the second to take a 4-1 lead. With Malone leading 6-1 in the fourth, Walsh would score three times to cut the lead to 6-4. Each team would then score single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, for the 8-6 final. Justin Shiflett (So., Chillicothe, OH/Zane Trace) was 3-5, with a double and two RBI for Malone, and Alex Schmid (Jr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) was 2-4 with two RBI. Tyler Maag (Sr., North Canton, OH/GlenOak) and Mike Suliks (Jr., Norton, OH/HS) each had two hits for Walsh and Duston Walter drove in two runs.

Adam Boulder (Sr., Louisville, OH/HS) started for Malone and picked-up the win. Billy Gura (Fr., Sagamore Hills, OH/St. Peter Chanel) was the starter and loser (1-2) for Walsh.

Walsh is home on Thursday for a single game against Baldwin-Wallace at 4 pm.

"Malone Blanks Cavs in Game One"

Malone (14-4, 1-0) blanked Walsh (9-12, 4-5) 13-0 in the first game of an American Mideast Conference doubleheader today. The Pioneers took advantage of Walsh errors and walks to score seven unearned runs. The Pioneers scored three runs in the first and second innings, then added three in the fifth and four in the sixth.

Malone's Adam Heiderman was 3-4 with two RBI and Matt Anderson was 3-4 with an RBI. Malone starter Todd Liberatore scattered eight hits in five innings to pick-up the win. Walsh's Mike Shaeffer (So., Waynesburg, OH/Sandy Valley) suffered the loss (1-3).

"Cavs (9-11, 4-4) Even AMC Mark on Strength of Weekend Sweep"

After losing four straight American Mideast Conference games at Shawnee State University the previous weekend, the Cavs could ill afford a similar fate against Point Park University this past weekend. And they didn't. Walsh swept the AMC visitors to even the AMC mark at 4-4. The sweep also gave the Cavs five straight wins, after they out slugged Mount Union College 13-12 earlier in the week. This week, the Cavs host rival Malone University (13-4, 0-0) in an AMC twin bill on Tuesday (1 pm), then play single games with Baldwin-Wallace College at home on Thursday (4 pm) and in Berea, Ohio on Sunday ( 1 pm).


Mike Weibley (Jr., Mentor, OH/Lake Catholic) and Tyler Maag (Sr., North Canton, OH/GlenOak) combined to drive in seven runs in the wild affair with Mount Union. Weibley doubled, homered and drove in four runs, while Maag hit a three-run homer. Duston Walter (Jr., Malvern, OH/HS) went 4-5, with a double, homer and two RBI. Freshman Jeff Kotlar (Euclid, OH/HS) picked-up the win in relief.

In the first game of their AMC twin bill against Point Park, Walsh rallied with five runs in the fifth inning and three more in the sixth to claim a come-from-behind 10-3 win. Tyler Maag was 3-4, Marc Miller (So., Hudson, OH/HS) went 3-3 with a double and three RBI and Duston Walter drove in a pair of runs, as did Dustin Lancy (So., Cuyahoga Falls, OH/HS). Steve Weirich (Jr., Minerva, OH/HS) picked-up the win in relief. Walsh's Billy Gura (Fr., Sagamore Hills, OH/St. Peter Chanel) hooked up with Point Park ace Addison Scherich in game two. Each lasted eight innings, with Gura scattering six hits, allowing two runs and fanning five. Walsh tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with two runs and won the game in the ninth, when Point Park failed to turn a game ending double play. Kotlar (2-1) worked the ninth to earn the win.

Saturday pretty much belonged to Duston Walter, as the Cavs swept Point Park by scores of 7-2 and 15-5 (6 inn.). Walter homered and walked three times in the opener, as Mike Dougherty (Sr., Canton, OH/McKinley) picked-up his first win (1-1) of the season. Dougherty scattered five hits and walked only a batter in five innings. Mike Suliks (Jr., Norton, OH/HS) drove in two runs and Rob Rose (Jr., Hudson, OH/HS) had three hits. In game two, Walter hit a three-run homer and again walked three times as the Cavs completed the sweep. Dustin Lancy doubled and drove in four runs and Justin Miller (Fr., Berlin, OH/Hiland) had a pinch hit three-run double. Jared Roberts (So., Berea, OH/St. Ignatius) settled down after a four-run second to win his second (2-2) game of the season.

Marc Miller has hit safely in the last seven games and leads the Cavs in hitting (.358) and with 16 RBI. Mike Suliks is batting .348, Dustin Lancy .345 and Rob Rose .333. Duston Walter leads the Cavs with three homeruns, all hit last week. Steve Weirich is 2-1, with a 2.95 ERA and Billy Gura is 1-1, with a 3.54 ERA. Jeff Kotlar has been the staff workhorse with eight appearances. Kotlar is 2-1, with a 3.86 ERA. Walsh's five game win streak is the longest of the season.

"Cavs Even AMC Mark with 2nd Straight Sweep of Point Park'

Walsh evened its American Mideast Conference record at 4-4, with their second straight double header sweep of Point Park University (5-11, 2-6). The Cavs won game one 7-2 and game two 15-5 in six innings. The Cavs have won five straight games and stand 9-11 overall. They host Malone University on Tuesday at 1 pm, in an AMC double header.

Mike Dougherty (Sr., Canton, OH/McKinley) pitched five strong innings in the opener to earn the win and even his record at 1-1. Walsh scored three runs in the second to take a 3-0 lead, and then put the game away with three more in the fifth. Mike Suliks (Jr., Norton, OH/HS) singled in two runs in the second, and Rob Rose (Jr., Hudson, OH/HS) went 3-4 with an RBI. Duston Walter (Jr., Malvern, OH/HS) walked three times and hit a solo homer.

Point Park jumped to a 4-0 lead, with four runs in the top of the second off of game two starter Jared Roberts (So., Berea, OH/St. Ignatius). Walsh rallied with a run in the second, and two more in the third, before blowing the game open with six runs in the fourth. Walter delivered the big blow with a three-run homer in the fourth. For the day, Walter homered twice and drew six walks. Dustin Lancy (So., Cuyahoga Falls, OHHS) was 2-4 with a double and four RBI, and Justin Miller (Fr., Berlin, OH/Hiland) cleared the bases with a three-run pinch hit double in the sixth.

Roberts settled down to earn the win and even his record at 2-2. Eric Shimko (So., Canton, OH/McKinley) finished up for the Cavs.

"Cavs Sweep AMC Twinbill From Point Park"

Walsh (7-11, 2-4) swept an American Mideast Conference double header from Point Park University (5-9, 2-4) today. The Cavs won game one 10-3, and rallied to win the nightcap 3-2 in nine innings. The same two teams meet at 1 pm at Walsh tomorrow, for another AMC twinbill.

Mike Shaeffer (So., Waynesburg, OH/Sandy Valley) went 5.2 innings in the opener, but did not recieve a decision. Steve Weirich (Jr., Minerva, OH/HS) came on in relief to earn the win. The Cavs trailed 3-2 in the fifth, when they exploded for five runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 7-3 lead. They would add two insurance runs in the last of the sixth. Three Point Park errors led to the five-run inning. Tyler Maag (Sr., North Canton, OH/GlenOak) was 3-4, Marc Miller (So., Hudson, OH/HS) went 3-3 with a double and three RBI and Duston Walter (Jr., Malvern, OH/HS) drove in a pair of runs, as did Dustin Lancy (So., Cuyahoga Falls, OHHS).

Walsh's Billy Gura and Point Park's Addison Scherich hooked up in game two, and battled through eight innings. Point Park scored single runs in the first and fifth innings, and led 2-0 in the seventh when the Cavs scored twice to send the game to extra innings. Maag's two out single in the seventh tied the game. Walsh scored the winning run, when Point Park failed to turn a double play with the bases loaded and one out on a ground ball to short by Mark Kelly (Jr., Norton, OH/HS). Jeff Kotlar (Fr., Euclid, OH/HS) worked the ninth for Walsh to pick-up the win.

"Walsh Wins Slugfest over Mount Union"

Walsh (5-11) rallied from a 12-10 deficit to defeat Mount Union College (7-2) 13-12 today. The Cavs scored two runs in the eighth inning to tie the game, and won it in the ninth on a Mike Suliks (Jr., Norton, OH/HS) double to centerfield with two outs. Suliks was 3-6.

Duston Walter (Jr., Malvern, OH/HS) was 4-5, with a double, homerun and three RBI. Tyler Maag (Sr., North Canton, OH/GlenOak) hit a three-run homer in Walsh's six-run second inning. Mike Weibley (Jr., Mentor, OH/Lake Catholic) also homered and drove in four runs. The Cavs banged out 18 hits. Jeff Kotlar (Fr.,Euclid, OH/HS) picked-up the win in relief.

Mount Union banged out 21 hits. Cory Slaybaugh was 4-5 with a homerun and three RBI and Dan Henderson was 4-5 with two RBI.

"Shawnee Sweeps Cavs Again"

(Portsmouth, OH) Walsh's (4-11, 0-4) bullpen failed to hold leads in both games of an American Mideast Conference doubleheader, as the Cavs lost twice to Shawnee State University today, giving the Bears a four-game weekend sweep. The Bears captured game one 8-7, and game two 10-9, winning both games in their final at-bat. The Cavs play a non-conference single game, at home, against Mount Union College on Tuesday at 4 pm.

Walsh led 7-3 in the seventh inning of game one, when the bullpen gave up five runs in the 8-7 defeat. Jeff Kotlar (Fr., Euclid, OH/HS) was charged with the loss. Mark Kelly (Jr., Norton, OH/HS) had three hits including a double. Mike Suliks (Jr., Norton, OH/HS) drove in two runs with a triple and two singles and Marc Miller (So., Hudson, OH/HS) doubled, singled and drove in three runs. Billy Gura (Fr., Sagamore Hills, OH/St. Peter Chanel) started for the Cavs, and left the game with the lead. In the nightcap, Mike Dougherty (Sr., Canton, OH/McKinley) started and left with the lead, but a again the bullpen failed to hold it. Shawnee snapped a 9-9 tie with a run in the bottom of the seventh to complete the sweep. Jared Roberts (So., Berea, OH/St. Ignatius) was charged with the loss. The sweep spoiled a big day for Mark Kelly, who had four hits in game two and drove in two runs. Dustin Lancy (So., Cuyahoga Falls, OH/HS) also singled in two runs.

"Cavs Drop Twinbill at Shawnee State"

(Portsmouth, OH) Walsh (4-9, 0-2) lost both ends of an American Mideast Conference doubleheader at Shawnee State University today. The Cavs lost game one 4-3, and game two 7-5. The same two teams meet at 12 pm on Saturday in another AMC twinbill.

Mike Schaffer (So., Waynesburg, OH/Sandy Valley) started and was tagged with the loss in the opener. In the nightcap, the Cavs were unable to hold a late lead, as the Bears scored fourth runs in the bottom of the fifth off of Mike Muenster (So., Gates Mills, OH/Notre Dame Cathedral Latin), who was charged with the loss. Steve Weirich (Jr., Minerva, OH/HS) started and pitched well. Mike Suliks (Jr., Norton, OH/HS) had three hits.

"Gura Pitches Well, But Cavs Fall to Warner Southern in Eight"

Despite a complete game from freshman right-hander Billy Gura (Fr., Sagamore Hills, OH/St. Peter Chanel), Walsh fell 3-2 to NAIA No. 22 Warner Southern today in their Florida finale. The Cavs come home with a 4-7 mark, and open American Mideast Conference play next Friday at Shawnee State University with a doubleheader.

Walsh trailed 2-0 in the sixth inning, when Dustin Lancy (So., Cuyahoga Falls, OH/HS) stroked a two-run triple to tie the game. The Cavs lone error would lead to Warner scoring the winning run in the eighth inning. After reaching base on an error, a Warner Southern double drove in the deciding run.

Gura allowed eight hits, fanned five and walked only a batter.

"Roberts Pitches Cavs to Win Over Siena Heights"

Jared Roberts (So., Berea, OH/St. Ignatius) picked-up his first win of the season, pitching 6.2 innings in a 9-4 win over Siena Heights College at the Warner Southern Tournament today. The win improves the Cavs record to 4-6, and salvages a split in their split double header today. Earlier in the day they were defeated 6-2 by NAIA No. 6 Bellevue University. The Cavs close their Florida trip at 12:30 tommorow, against an opponent yet to be determined.

Roberts fanned five and allowed only five hits, in evening his record at 1-1. Freshman Jeff Kotlar (Euclid, OH/HS) worked out of a bases loaded jam with two outs in the seventh to earn his third save of the spring. Cory Turkovich (So., Carrollton, OH/HS) homered, doubled and drove in three runs. Mark Kelly (Jr., Norton, OH/HS) tripled and drove in a run and Mike Weibley (Jr., Mentor, OH/Lake Catholic) drove in two runs.

"Cavs Fall 6-2 to NAIA No. 6 Bellevue"

NAIA No. 6 Bellevue University scored three runs in the sixth inning, on their way to a 6-2 win over the Cavs (3-6) this morning at the Warner Southern Tournament. The Cavs play a single game at 5 pm today against Siena Heights University.

Bellevue led 3-2, when they put together the three-run sixth. Walsh lefty, Mike Shaeffer (So., Waynesburg, OH/Sandy Valley) was charged with the loss. Bellevue out hit the Cavs 10-5. Mike Weibley (Jr., Mentor, OH/Lake Catholic) had two hits and a RBI for the Cavs.

"Bats Come Alive in Split"

Walsh's bats (3-5) came to life, as the Cavs gained a split in the first day of the Warner Southern Tournament. Mike Dougherty (Sr., Canton, OH/McKinley) pitched well, but was tagged with the loss, as the Cavs fell 5-2 to Thomas University. Dustin Lancy (So., Cuyahoga Falls, OH/HS) hit a solo homerun. Walsh bagned out 16 hits against Warner Southern and came away with a 13-2 win to snap a four-game losing streak. Steve Weirich (Jr., Minerva, OH/HS) went the distance for the second time this season, and evened his record at 1-1. There were plenty of hitting stars for the Cavs. Tyler Maag (Sr., North Canton, OH/GlenOak) had three hits and two RBI. Mike Weibley (Jr., Mentor, OH/Lake Catholic) and Duston Walter (Jr., Malvern, OH/HS) each had a double and two singles, Marc Miller (So., Hudson, OH/HS) had three hits, and Lancy had two hits and four RBI.

"Webber Defeats Cavs 13-2"

(Babson Park, FL) Walsh fell to 2-4 on the spring, after losing 13-2 to Webber International under the lights tonight. Webber scored seven runs in the fourth inning to bust the game open. Rob Rose (Jr., Hudson, OH/HS) started and was tagged with the loss. Marc Miller (So., Hudson, OH/HS) and Dustin Lancy (So., Cuyahoga Falls, OH/HS) each two hits and a double for the Cavs. The Cavs are idle tomorrow.

"Cavs Surrender Three in 7th, Lose First Game of Split Double Header"

(Babson Park, FL) Siena Heights (3-5) scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, to defeat Walsh (2-3) 5-4 today. The Cavs are scheduled to play Webber International at 7 pm tonight.

Walsh erased a 1-0 Siena Heights lead, with three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Marc Miller (So., Hudson, OH/HS) singled home Mike Smetana (Fr., Chardon, OH/Berkshire) to tie the game. Rob Rose (Jr., Hudson, OH/HS) then gave the Cavs a 3-1 lead with a two-run single. The Saints cut the lead to 3-2 with a single run in the bottom of the sixth. Walsh came right back in the top of the seventh, when Marc Miller singled home Tyler Maag (Sr., North Canton, OH/GlenOak), to give the Cavs a 4-2 lead. In the Siena Heights seventh, a two-run single by Cory Lehman tied the game, and a bases loaded walk from Walsh's Mike Muenster (So., Gates Mills, OH/Notre Dame Cathedral Catholic) forced in the winning run.

Marc Miller and Tyler Maag each three hits for the Cavs. Billy Gura (Fr., Sagamore Hills, OH/St. Peter Chanel) started for the Cavs, and was tagged with the loss. Gura lasted into the seventh inning, allowing five runs on seven hits, with two strikeouts and no walks.

"Cavs Split at Webber"

(Babson Park, FL) Walsh (2-2) received good starting pitching in both games of a double header at Webber, but had to settle for a split. Behind the pitching of left-hander Mike Shaeffer (So., Waynesburg, OH/Sandy Valley) (1-0), the Cavs won the opener 4-3. Shaeffer pitched six strong innings and allowed just a run. Freshman Jeff Kotlar (Fr., Euclid, OH/HS) worked the seventh to earn his second save in as many tries. Duston Walter (Jr., Malvern, OH/HS) provided the big blow offensively, with a two-run, bases loaded single in the fifth inning which gave the Cavs the lead. In the nightcap, Jared Roberts (So., Berea, OH/St. Ignatius) (0-1) was saddled with a 3-1 defeat. Four Walsh errors led to three unearned runs in the fourth inning.

Tomorrow, the Cavs meet Siena Heights in a single game at 12:30, and play Webber under the lights at 7 pm.

"Cavs Split With Siena Heights"

(Babson Park, FL) Walsh (1-1) split a double header with Siena Heights today. The Cavs came from behind to win game one 5-3, but left 16 runners on base in dropping the night cap 2-0.

Walsh scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning to erase a 3-2 deficit, on their way to winning the opener. The Cavs had three consecutive batters hit by a pitch, and then scored what proved to be the winning run on an error. They then scored an insurance run in the seventh on a Rob Rose (Jr., Hudson, OH/HS) single. Marc Miller (So., Hudson, OH/HS) drove in two runs for the Cavs. Mike Dougherty (Sr., Canton, OH/McKinley) started and fanned eight in 4.1 innings. Billy Gura (Fr., Sagamore Hills, OH/St. Peter Chanel) worked 1.2 innings of scoreless relief to pick-up his first collegiate win. Freshman Jeff Kotlar (Euclid, OH/HS) worked a perfect seventh inning to earn his first collegiate save. Walsh out hit Siena Heights eight to four, but left 16 runners on base in the nightcap in losing 2-0. Siena Heights scored two unearned runs off a Cavs starter Steve Weirich (Jr., Minerva, OH/HS) in the first inning. Weirich was outstanding in defeat, fanning four in going the distance.

The Cavs play a double header at Webber International tomorrow.
