"Cavs Place Five on All-AMC Team; Davidson First Team"

Walsh University placed five student-athletes on the American Mideast Conference Team, with Jessica Davidson (Jr., Akron, OH/Ellet) being the only first-team selection. The Cavs finished the season 20-29 overall and 11-9 in the AMC.

Davidson, a transfer from the University of Akron, played second base for the Cavs and led team in hitting with a .404 average. She tied for the team lead in doubles with ten, while driving in 26 runs with three homeruns and a team-best three triples.

Megan Allen (Fr., Akron, OH/Hoban) was named to the All-AMC Freshmen Team and as a honorable mention all-conference selection. Allen, who plays first base, was second to Davidson with a .355 average. She led the team with 49 hits, 35 RBI and tied for the team lead in homeruns (9) and doubles (10).

Catcher Erica Kreiling (Fr., Massillon, OH/Perry), shortstop Laura Schmidt (Sr., Canton, OH/Jackson) and third sacker Brittany Sostre (So., Parma, OH/Valley Forge) were also named honorable mention. Kreiling tied for the team lead in doubles (10), while hitting .333 with six homeruns and 29 RBI. Schmidt, a two-time member of the All-AMC Team, hit .275 with a career-high six homeruns, eight doubles and 19 RBI. She led the Cavs in runs scored with 30 and with 15 walks. Schmidt was a first-team selection last year and honorable mention as a sophomore. Sostre hit .289 and tied Allen for the homerun lead with nine. She also had six doubles and drove in 26 runs.

"Mt. Vernon Eliminates Cavs"

Mount Vernon Nazarene University (21-16) defeated Walsh (20-29) 3-1, to eliminate the Cavs from the American Mideast Conference Tournament. The Cougars scored two runs in the second inning off of Walsh starter Ashley Virgin (Fr., Fairlawn, OH/Copley). The Cavs answered in the sixth inning, as Jessica Davidson (Jr., Akron, OH/Ellet) scored on a sacrifice fly by Erica Kreiling (Fr., Massillon, OH/Perry). The Cougars would get the run back in the bottom of the inning.

Virgin pitched well, going the distance and allowing only six hits. She fanned six and did not walk a batter. Virgin finishes the season 13-10.

"Cavs Stay Alive With Win"

Walsh (20-28) stayed alive in the American Mideast Conference Tournament with a 6-1 win over the University of Rio Grande. Walsh is back in action on at 10 am tomorrow playing Mount Vernon Nazarene in an elimination game. The Cougars beat the Cavs 9-1 in the first game of the tournament..

Ashley Virgin (Fr., Fairlawn, OH/Copley) went the distance to improve to 13-9. Virgin allowed only two hits, while fanning two. Megan Allen (Fr., Akron, OH/Hoban) drove in three runs and Brittany Sostre (So., Parma, OH/Valley Forge) hit a solo homer, as the Cavs scored two runs in the first, third and fifth innings.

"Cavs Lose 9-1 to Mt. Vernon Nazarene in AMC Tourney Game"

Walsh (19-28) lost 9-1 to Mount Vernon Nazarene (20-15) in the first game of the double elimination American Mideast Conference Tournament. The Cavs now play at 4 pm against the loser of the Rio Grande/Ohio Dominican game.

Mt. Vernon scored runs in the first four innings in winning 9-1 in five innings. The Cougars led 6-0 after two innings. Walsh's only run came on a Erica Kreiling (Fr., Massillon, OH/Perry) solo homerun in the fifth inning. Kelsey Ford (Fr.,Boardman, OH/HS) started, and lasted just 1.2 innings in taking the loss (6-15). She was charged with six runs on seven hits.

"Cavs Meet Mt. Vernon Nazarene in AMC Tournament Game"

Fifth seeded Walsh (19-27) meets fourth seeded Mt. Vernon Nazarene (19-15) in the first game of the double-elimination American Mideast Conference Tournament at 10 am on Wednesday. If Walsh wins, they play top seeded Notre Dame College (27-9) at 2 pm. If they lose, they fall into the losers bracket and play the loser of the Rio Grande/Ohio Dominican game at 4 pm. All tournament games will be played at Notre Dame College in South Euclid, Ohio.

"Cavs Blast Seven HR's in Sweep at Carlow"

Walsh (19-27, 11-9) kept its playoff hopes alive with an American Mideast Conference sweep at Carlow College (7-24, 3-15) today. The Cavs bats produced 18 hits, and 14 runs in the six inning 14-6 win in the opener, and 11 hits in the 9-0 five inning win in the nightcap. The regular season in the AMC ends tomorrow, with playoff matchups being announced on Monday.

Walsh clouted four homeruns in the opener, and scored eight runs in the final two innings. Brittany Sostre (So., Parma, OH/Valley Forge), Kelsey Ford (Fr., Boardman, OH/HS), Erica Kreiling (Fr., Massillon, OH/Perry) and Ashley Hoover (So., Alliance, OH/Louisville) all went deep. Hoover drove in five runs, while Ford and Sostre each had three RBI. Ashley Virgin (Fr., Fairlawn, OH/Copley) picked up the win in relief of Ford.

Megan Allen (Fr., Akron, OH/Hoban) homered twice in the nightcap and drove in five runs as the Cavs completed the sweep. Jessica Davidson (Jr., Akron, OH/Ellet/U. of Akron) went 3-4 with a homer and two singles. Katherine Cannell ( Fr., Hillsborough, NJ/Immaculata) went ther distance to earn the win.

"Walsh Loses Two to Rio Grande"

Walsh (16-25, 8-8) lost two games to Rio Grande today. In game one the Cavs were defeated by the sccore of 10-6. Kelsey Ford (Fr., Boardman, OH/HS) took the loss and was three for four at the plate with two RBI and a double. Ashley Hoover was two for four with a RBI and Brittany Sostre (So., Parma, OH/Valley Forge) added one hit, one run, and two RBI. Jessica Davidson (Jr., Akron, OH/Ellet/U. of Akron) was two for three with a double.

In game two, Rio beat Walsh 9-4. Hoover went one for two, Laura Schmidt (Jr., Canton, OH/Jackson), Erica Kreiling (Fr., Massillon, OH/Perry), and Hoover all went one for two and Jenna Rosso (Fr., Amherst, OH/Amherst Steele) added two hits on four at-bats with a double and two RBI. Katherine Cannell came in relief for Ashley Virgin (Fr., Fairlawn, OH/Copley).

"Cavs, Malone Split"

Walsh (16-24, 8-6) split an American Mideast Conference double header at Malone University (8-16, 4-6) today. The Cavs won game one 2-1, but dropped the nightcap 3-1. They host Shawnee State in an AMC twin bill tomorrow at 3 pm.

Maggie Yavorsky (Fr., Norton, OH/HS) doubled home the games first run in the seventh inning to give Walsh a 1-0 lead. Brittany Sostre (So., Parma, OH/Valley Forge) then drove in what proved to be a the winning run with a single. Ashley Virgin (Fr., Fairlawn, OH/Copley) pitched a two-hitter and allowed an unearned run to pick-up the win. She fanned 11.

Megan Allen (Fr., Akron, OH/Hoban) doubled in Walsh's only run in the nightcap. Katherine Cannell ( Fr., Hillsborough, NJ/Immaculata) started and took the loss. She allowed al three runs on five hits, while fanning six.

"Cavs Split at Point Park"

Walsh (15-23, 7-5) split an American Mideast Conference double header at Point Park University today. The Cavs won game one 5-4 in ten innings behind the pitching of Kelsey Ford (Fr., Boardman, OH/HS). Ford allowed four runs on two strikeouts and pitched the distance. Ashley Virgin (Fr., Fairlawn, OH/Copley) hit a double and added one run. Laura Schmidt (Jr., Canton, OH/Jackson) went one for three, hitting a homerun in the ninth while driving in two RBI. Erica Kreiling (Fr., Massillon, OH/Perry) drove in the winning runs in the tenth off a double, scoring Jenna Rosso (Fr., Amherst, OH/HS) and Jessica Davidson (Jr., Akron, OH/Ellet/U. of Akron).

In game two, Walsh lost 8-5. Davidson went three for four with a homerun and a triple. Meghan Rowley (Fr., Brunswick, OH/Holy Name) went one for three with a double and a RBI. Virgin got the loss while Katherine Cannell (Fr., Hillsborough, NJ/Immaculata) came in for relief.

The Cavs play at Malone University tomorrow (3 pm) in an AMC twinbill.

"Walsh Splits AMC Doubleheader with MVNU"

Walsh (14-22, 6-3) split an AMC doubleheader with MVNU today. Walsh won game one 2-1 off a game winning homerun by Megan Allen (Fr., Akron, OH/Hoban) in the bottom of the sixth. Allen went one for three while Jessica Davidson (Jr., Akron, OH/Ellet/U. of Akron) added two hits on three at-bats. Erica Kreiling (Fr., Massillon, OH/Perry) also went one for three at the plate with one RBI. Ashley Virgin (Fr., Fairlawn, OH/Copley) got the win.

In game two, MVNU defeated Walsh 6-1. Kelsey Ford (Fr., Boardman, OH/HS) took the loss with three strikeouts. Kreiling went two for three and Allen went one for three at the plate with one RBI.

Walsh travels to Point Park University tomorrow for an AMC doubleheader beginning at 3pm.

"Walsh Strikes Out Against Notre Dame College"

Walsh (13-21, 5-3) lost a doubleheader today against Notre Dame College. In game one, the Cavs had four hits in the 6-2 loss. Jessica Davidson (Jr., Akron, OH/Ellet/U. of Akron) was one for three with a RBI and a double. Megan Allen (Fr., Akron, OH/Hoban) also added a hit and a RBI. Kelsey Ford (Fr., Boardman, OH/HS) took the loss, but only allowed two earned runs.

In game two, NDC defeated Walsh 11-0 in five innings. Jenna Rosso (Fr., Amherst, OH/HS) went one for three and Caitlyn King (Fr., Salem, OH/West Branch) came in in the second inning and hit a base hit. Ashley Virgin (Fr., Fairlawn, OH/Copley) took the loss and Katherine Cannell ( Fr., Hillsborough, NJ/Immaculata) came in relief.

The Cavs have a make-up doubleheader against Notre Dame College on Monday, April 13.

"Cavs Split With ODU"

Walsh (13-19, 5-1) split a pair of games today against AMC foe Ohio Dominican University. The Cavs lost game one 6-5 in the bottom of the ninth off a single that scored the winning run from third base. Kelsey Ford (Fr., Boardman, OH/HS) pitched the distance with five strikeouts. Erica Kreiling (Fr., Massillon, OH/Perry) went two for four, Brittany Sostre (So., Parma,OH/Valley Forge) hit a home run, and Jessica Davidson (Jr., Akron, OH/Ellet/U of Akron) added two RBI off one hit.

In game two, Walsh defeated ODU 10-7. Ashley Virgin (Fr., Fairlawn, OH/Copley) got the win with three strikeouts. Megan Allen (Fr., Akron, OH/Hoban) went two for three with five RBI, one run scored, and hit a grand slam in the bottom of the first. Maggie Yavorsky (Fr., Norton, OH/HS) added two hits on four at bats with two runs scored and one RBI.

Walsh is back in action on Friday when they host MVNU for an AMC doubleheader beginning at 1pm.

"Cavs Sweep AMC Twin Bill From Cedarville"

Walsh (12-18, 4-0) captured both ends of an American Mideast Conference double header from Cedarville University (11-21, 1-7) today, by the scores of 9-3 and 13-5 (5). The Cavs are at Malone University for an AMC double header on Tuesday at 3 pm.

Laura Schmidt (Jr., Canton, OH/Jackson) and Jenna Rosso led off game one with back-to-back homeruns, as the Cavs won 9-3. AMC Pitcher of the Week Kelsey Ford (Fr., Boardman, OH/HS) pitched a complete game four-hitter, to improve to 5-9 on the season. Ford also doubled in two runs to help her own cause. Jessica Davidson (Jr., Akron, OH/Ellet) was 3-4 with a triple and three runs scored. After Cedarville 's Sarah Hoffman homered in the first, the Cavs came back with six runs in the bottom of the inning.

In game two, the Cavs scored four runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings in a 13-5 win. Schmidt and Meghan Allen (Fr., Akron, OH/Archbishop Hoban) each hit two-run homers in the four-run third. Erica Kreiling (Fr., Massillon, OH/Perry) and Davidson each drove in two runs also. Ashley Virgin (Fr., Fairlawn, OH/Copley) fanned eight in going the distance to improve her record to 7-6.

"Kelsey Ford Named AMC Pitcher of the Week"

CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Notre Dame third baseman Anna Ball and Walsh righthander Kelsey Ford are the AMC Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week for games played on March 23-29.

Ford, a 5-10 freshman from Boardman, Ohio, tossed a complete-game four-hitter to win at Ursuline, 5-2. She allowed one earned run with nine strikeouts and one walk for the Cavaliers, 10-18 overall and 2-0 AMC.

"Cavs Split at Urbana"

Walsh (10-18) split a non-conference double header at Urbana University (13-16) today. The Blue Knights took the opener 5-4, with the Cavs winning the nightcap 7-6. The Cavs are back in action on Saturday, with a home American Mideast Conference double header with Cedarville University at 1 pm.

Despite out hitting Urbana 10-9 in the opener, the Blue Knights prevailed 5-4. With the Cavs trailing 4-1 in the sixth, Brittany Sostre (So., Parma, OH/Valley Forge) slugged a two-run homerun to trim the lead to 4-3. Urbana got the run back in the bottom of the inning, with Walsh adding a single run in the seventh. Sostre, Megan Allen (Fr., Akron, OH/Archbishop Hoban), Erica Kreiling (Fr., Massillon, OH/Perry) and Jessica Davidson (Jr., Akron, OH/Ellet) each had two hits. Kelsey Ford (Fr., Boardman, OH/HS) pitched a complete game for the Cavs, but was tagged with the loss and is now 4-8 on the season.

In the nightcap, the Cavs scored five unearned runs with two outs in the sixth inning, on their way to a split and 7-6 win. Allen hit her third homerun of the season and Ashley Hoover (So., Alliance, OH/Louisville) drove in two runs. Ashley Virgin (Fr., Fairlawn, OH/Copley) fanned six, and went the distance to pick-up the win and improve to 6-6.

"Walsh Open AMC Play With Sweep of Ursuline"

The Cavaliers (9-17, 2-0) won both end of an American Mideast Conference doubleheader at Ursuline College today.

Walsh took the first game 5-2 with Kelsey Ford (Fr., Boardman, OH/HS) earning the win behind an impressive pitching performance with nine k's. Walsh scored a single runs in the third and fourth innings, and added two in the sixth and one in the seventh. Ford was 2 for 3 with a double, to go with her the strong pitching performance. Laura Schmidt (Jr., Canton, OH/Jackson) was 2 for 4 with a double and two runs scored. Megan Allen (Fr., Akron, OH/Archbishop Hoban) was 3 for 4, as was Brittany Sostre (So., Parma, OH/Valley Forge), who had a home run in the 7th.

The second game was all Walsh as they won in 7-0. Ashley Virgin (Fr., Fairlawn, OH/Copley) pitched a shutout with six strikeouts. Megan Allen (Fr., Akron, OH/Hoban) was 3 for 4 with an RBI, but it was Jenna Rosso (Fr., Amherst, OH/HS) who had the game winner in the 4th with a double. Rosso was 3 for 4 in both games.

"Cavs' Struggles Continue"

Walsh's early season struggles continue, as they dropped six of eight games last week, to stand 7-17 on the season. This Wednesday, they open defense of their American Mideast Conference championship with a double header at Ursuline College (3 pm).

After dropping two games to Mount Union College on Thursday, the Cavs rebounded with two wins at the Indiana Wesleyan Tournament over the weekend. Ashley Virgin (Fr., Fairlawn, OH/Copley) pitched five strong innings in Walsh's 4-2 win over the University of Saint Francis on Friday. Virgin scattered six hits in five innings and allowed only a run. Brittany Sostre (So., Parma, OH/Valley Forge) doubled and drove in two runs. After losing a slugfest 12-11 to Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday, the Cavs bounced back with a 6-4 win over St. Francis (Ill) in the second game of the day. In the Wesleyan loss, Laura Schmidt (Jr., Canton, OH/Jackson) drove in three runs with a double and triple, while Sostre and Erica Kreiling (Fr., Massillon, OH/Perry) each homered and drove in two runs. In the win over St. Francis, Ashley Virgin went the distance to improve to 4-5.

Jessica Davidson (Jr., Akron, OH/Ellet) is hitting a team-leading .368 and is second on the team with 13 RBI. Megan Allen (Fr., Akron, OH/Archbishop Hoban) has hit safely in five straight games and is batting .317. Erica Kreiling leads the Cavs with three homeruns and 18 RBI and is batting .313.

"Davenport Takes Two From Cavs"

Walsh fell to 7-17 on the season, after losing both ends of a non-conference double header to Davenport University (13-7) today. The Cavs dropped game one 5-2 and game two 7-3. The Cavs are idle until Wednesday, when they travel to Ursuline College for an American Mideast Conference double header (3 pm).

Davenport scored four runs in the top of the first inning in game one. Walsh starter Kelsey Ford (Fr., Boardman, OH/HS) was the victim of two errors, which led to three unearned runs. Ford is now 3-8 on the season. Laura Schmidt (Jr., Canton, OH/Jackson) had two of the Cavs five hits. In game two, the Cavs falied to hold a 3-1 lead, as Davenport snapped a 3-3 tie with four runs in the sixth inning, on their way to a sweep. Ashley Virgin (Fr., Fairlawn, OH/Copley) started for the Cavs, and was tagged with the loss (4-6). Davenport clubbe four homeruns in the nightcap.

"Cavs Split Again"

The Cavaliers( 7-15) split two more games today on the diamond in Indiana. The Cavs had 17 hits against Indiana Weseyan, but were defeated by the score of 12-11. Laura Schmidt (Jr., Canton, OH/Jackson) was had a double and a triple on five at bats with three RBIs; Maggie Yavorsky (Fr., Norton, OH/HS) added two hits; Erica Kreiling (Fr., Massillon, OH/Perry) had two RBIs on a home run, going two for five; Brittany Sostre (So., Parma, OH/Valley Forge) also had a home run and a double with two RBI's, going three for five; and Ashley Hoover (So., Alliance, OH/Louisville) and Nikki Goodwin (Fr., Munroe Falls, OH/Stow) each added two hits. Katherine Cannell (Fr., Hillsborough, NJ/Immaculata) took the loss while Kelsey Ford (Fr., Boardman, OH/HS) came in for relief and went two for four at the plate with two doubles.

In game two, the Cavs defeated University of Saint Francis (IL) 6-4. Ashley Virgin (Fr., Fairlawn, OH/Copley) got the win, pitching all seven and adding five strikeouts. Jenna Rosso (Fr., Amherst, OH/HS) went two for three with two runs scored, Kreiling added two hits and one run, Megan Allen (Fr., Akron, OH/Hoban) went two for three with a double, and Hoover was two for three at the plate.

The Cavs return to their home field tomorrow, when they face Davenport University in a doubleheader beginning at 12pm.

"Walsh Splits Two In Indiana"

Walsh (6-14) split two games today, beating University of Saint Francis (IN) 4-2 and losing to Olivet Nazarene University 13-6. Ashley Virgin (Fr., Fairlawn, OH/Copley) got the win while Kelsey Ford (Fr., Boardman, OH/HS) earned a save against USF. Megan Allen (Fr., Akron, OH/Hoban) went two for four with three runs scored, Brittany Sostre (So., Parma, OH/Valley Forge) added two hits on four at-bats wit one run scored and two RBIs. Laura Schmidt ( Jr., Canton, OH/Jackson) and Maggie Yavorsky (Fr., Norton, OH/HS) each added a hit in the win.

In game two, the Cavs were led by Schmidt, going two for four at the plate and Yavorsky two for three. Sostre added two RBIs. Ford took the loss, while Katherine Cannell (Fr., Hillsborough, NJ/Immaculata) came in for relief for Walsh.

The Cavs are back on the field tomorrow, when they face Indiana Wesleyan University at 10am and University of Saint Francis (IL) at 2pm.

"Cavs Drop Twinbill"

Walsh lost both ends of a non-conference double header against Mount Union College today, by the scores of 12-3 and 9-7. In game one, the Cavs had a difficult game, as they were mercied in five innings. Kelsey Ford (Fr., Boardman, OH/HS) took the loss and was relieved by Katherine Cannell (Hillsborough, NJ/Immaculata). Laura Schmidt (Jr., Canton, OH/Jackson) went two for two with a double, Jessica Davidson (Akron, OH/Ellet/U. of Akron) went two for three with a double, and Megan Allen (Fr., Akron, OH/Hoban) added a double. All three each drove in one run.

In game two, the Cavs hung in with Mount Union until the seventh inning, when they gave up three runs. Schmidt had another good game at the plate, going two for three with a double and a homerun, driving in two RBIs. Erica Kreiling (Fr., Massillon, OH/Perry) went two for four at the plate, with three RBI and a double. Ashley Virgin (Fr., Fairlawn, OH/Copley) pitched all seven innings for the Cavs.

Walsh travels to Indiana tomorrow to face University of Saint Francis (IN) at 2pm and Olivet Nazarene University at 4pm. The Cavs then play Indiana Wesleyan and University of Saint Francis (IL) on Saturday.

"Walsh Loses Doubleheader at Fairmont State"

Walsh (5-11) lost a doubleheader today at Fairmont State. The Cavs lost game one 5-3. Kelsey Ford (Fr., Boardman, OH/HS) took the loss with five runs and three walks. Erica Kreiling (Fr., Massillon, OH/HS) went two for four at the plate, Megan Allen (Fr., Akron, OH/Hoban) added a RBI, and Ford had two hits on three at-bats.

In game two, the Cavs gave up seven unearned runs on seven errors, for a final score of 12-7. Ashley Virgin (Fr., Fairlawn, OH/Copley) gave up five earned runs. At the plate, Allen went one for two, Nikki Goodwin (Fr., Munroe Falls, OH/Stow) added a RBI on one hit, and Amber Levengood (Fr., Dover, OH/HS) went two for three. Ashley Hoover (So., Alliance, OH/Louisville) had a good day at the plate going three for four with two RBIs.

The Cavs are idle until next Wednesday, March 18, when they travel to Edinboro University for a doubleheader beginning at 3pm. Walsh then hosts the first doubleheader of the year on Thursday, March 19, against Mount Union College.

"Walsh Falls Twice"

Walsh (5-9) lost two more games to finish the week in Florida with a 5-9 record. In game one, against Shorter College, Kelsey Ford (Fr., Boardman, OH/HS) took the loss, giving up seven runs, seven hits and four walks. She fanned three. Erica Kreiling (Massillon, OH/Perry) went two for three at the plate with a homerun. Laura Schmidt (Jr., Canton, OH/Jackson) and Lauren Davis (Fr., Ewing, NJ/HS) each went 1-3.

In game two, Lee beat Walsh 12-3. Katherine Cannell (Fr., Hillsborough, NJ/Immaculata) started for the Cavs and took the loss. Schmidt hit a homerun in the third inning. Jenna Rosso (Fr., Amherst, OH/Steele) went 1-2 and scored a run, and Maggie Yavorsky (Fr., Norton, OH/HS) was 1-3 and scored a run.

Walsh returns to Ohio after the week in Florida and travels to Fairmont State this Wednesday for a doubleheader beginning at 3pm.

"Cavs Lose Two More"

Walsh (5-7) had another tough day on the diamond losing both games today. Ashley Virgin (Fr., Fairlawn, OH/Copley) took the loss in the first game against Milligan (7-6). Walsh jumped out quickly taking a 6-1 lead lead by Jessica Davidson's ( Jr., Akron, OH/Ellet/U. of Akron) three run homer and four RBI and Megan Allen's (Fr., Akron, OH/Archbishop Hoban) second home run of the week. Milligan took the lead in the 6th on a walk and two errors and Walsh was unable to answer in the 7th.

Auburn beat the Cavs 10-0 in the second game. Kelsey Ford (Fr., Boardman, OH/HS) started and took the loss. Walsh managed just three hits.

Walsh finishes the weekend with two games today against Shorter and then against Lee.

"Walsh Drops Two"

Walsh (5-5) dropped two games against national raked teams today ending their win streak at four. Biola took the first game 2-6 with Kelsey Ford (Fr., Boardman, OH/HS) taking the loss. She allowed 6 runs on 9 hits with 2 strikeouts. The offense was generated by Brittany Sostre (So., Parma, OH/Valley Forge) and Jenna Rosso (Fr., Amherst, OH/HS) with Sostre going 1 for 3 with a double and an RBI and Rosso also going 1 for 3 with a run scored. Lauren Davis (Fr., Ewing, NJ/HS) also went 1 for 4

The Cavs couldn't seem to get the hit they needed in the second game losing 0-5 to William and Penn. Ashley Virgin (Fr., Fairlawn, OH/Copley) pitched well going the distance and striking out seven, allowing only three earned runs on a homer in the third. Brittany Sostre (So., Parma, OH/Valley Forge) and Megan Allen (Fr., Akron, OH/Archbishop Hoban) each had a hit in the loss.

Walsh has a busy weekend with 4 more games still and will face Milligan and Auburn tomorrow.

Walsh Improves Win Streak to Four; Wins Two More"

Walsh (5-3) won two more games today against Clarke and Indiana Wesleyan. In game one, Kelsey Ford (Fr., Boardman, OH/HS) went the distance, allowing four runs, five hits, five walks, and had two strikeouts. Walsh defeated Clarke 5-4, with the winning run coming in the seventh off an Erica Kreiling (Fr., Massillon, OH/Perry) RBI single, to score Maggie Yavorsky (Fr., Norton, OH/HS). Jessica Davidson ( Jr., Akron, OH/Ellet/U. of Akron) went three for four; Yavorksy went one for two with three runs scored on two walks; Kreiling added an RBI off of two hits; and Megan Allen (Fr., Akron, OH/Hoban) went two for three at the plate with a home run.

In game two, Walsh defeated IWU 4-3. The Cavs, once again, scored the winning run in the seventh inning. Laura Schmidt (Jr., Canton, OH/Jackson) walked and moved to second on a sacrifice hit. Schmidt then moved to third on a passed ball. Kreiling struckout, however, the catcher dropped the ball and threw Kreiling out at first, allowing Schmidt to steal home for the winning run. Ashley Virgin (Fr., Fairlawn, OH/Copley) got the win after pitching all seven innings with three runs, seven hits, and seven strikeouts.

The Cavs have a day of rest tomorrow and return to the field on Friday, when they face Biola at 1:30pm and William Penn at 6:30pm.

"Cavs Sweep Double Header; Even Record at 3-3"

Walsh (3-3) swept a split double header today. In game one, the Cavs defeated Heidelberg College 5-4. Kelsey Ford (Fr., Boardman, OH/HS) got the win in relief of Katherine Cannell (Fr., Hillsborough, NJ/Immaculata). Ashley Virgin (Fr., Fairlawn, OH/Copley) recorded her first save. Jessica Davidson (Jr., Akron, OH/Ellet/U. of Akron) drove Lauren Davis (Fr., Ewing, NJ/HS) for the winning run. Jenna Rosso (Fr., Amherst, OH/HS) went 2-3 with a double and a RBI. Caitlyn King (Fr., Salem, OH/West Branch) also went 1-3 with a double and two RBI.

In game two, the Cavs beat Saint Xavier University 5-2 behind the pitching of Virgin. Virgin went the distance, allowing two runs, seven hits, with six strikeouts. In the first inning, Erica Kreiling (Fr., Massillon, OH/Perry) hit her first homerun of her career, a two-run shot to give the Cavs the early lead. SXU would score two runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the game at 2-2. The Cavs would be the next to score, in the sixth, on an Ashley Hoover (So., Alliance, OH/Louisville) two-run triple, scoring Amber Levengood (Fr., Dover, OH/HS) and Rachel Harter (So., East Canton, OH/HS). Davis went 2-3; Kreiling 2-3 with three RBI, and Hoover added a triple with two RBI.

Cavs face Clarke at 11am and Indiana Wesleyan at 1pm tomorrow.

"Walsh Loses Two"

Walsh (1-3) lost two games in Florida today. Northwood University defeated the Cavs 3-2 in the opener. Katherine Cannell (Fr., Hillsborough, NJ/Immaculata) started and took the loss. Cannell was touched for two earned runs and five hits. Lauren Davis (Fr., Ewing, NJ/HS) went 2-3 Caitlyn King (Fr., Salem, OH/West Branch) was 1-2 with a double.

In game two, Indiana Wesleyan snapepd a scoreless tie in the fifth inning wiht six runs, and when on to beat the Cavs 6-0. Kelsey Ford (Fr., Boardman, OH/HS) started and was charged with the loss. Four of six runs allowed by Ford were unearned. Maggie Yavorsky (Fr., Norton, OH/HS) went 1-3 and Ashley Hoover (So., Alliance, OH/Louisville) added a hit.

Walsh takes on Heidelberg at 9am and Saint Xavier University at 11am tomorrow.

"Cavs Open Season with a Split"

Walsh (1-1) opened the 2009 season splitting two games today. The Cavs were beat by Eastern Menonite 4-2 in the season opener. Ashley Virgin (Fr., Fairlawn, OH/Copley) went the distance and took the loss, allowing four unearned runs, three hits. She fanned seven. Brittany Sostre (So., Parma, OH/Valley Forge) and Erica Kreiling (Fr., Massillon, OH/Perry) both went one for three and Jenna Rosso (Fr., Amherst, OH/HS) added a single.

In the second game, Walsh defeated College of Saint Benedict 11-3. Kelsey Ford (Fr., Boardman, OH/HS) picked-up the win with five strong innings. She allowed three runs, five hits, and fanned four. Maggie Yavorsky (Fr., Norton, OH/HS) went two for three, scored two runs and drove in two runs. Kreiling added two RBI and Jessica Davidson (Jr., Akron, OH/Ellet/University of Akron) went two for three with three RBI and a double.

The Cavs are back in action tomorrow at 11am against Northwood University and take on Indiana Wesleyan at 3pm.

"Cavs 26th in Preseason NAIA Softball Poll"

Walsh received 98 votes and stand 26th in the NAIA Preseason rankings. The Cavs won the American Mideast Conference and Region IX Championship last year and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament. The Cavs finished 33-14 overall and 18-2 in the AMC North.
