"Heck, Immel Selected as 2010 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes"

The NAIA has announced that 184 men's cross country student-athletes have been named 2010 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes. Walsh University's Evan Heck (Sr., Navarre, OH/Canton Central Catholic) far left and Luke Immel (Sr., Sugarcreek, OH/Garaway) left have been selected to the team.

In order to be nominated by an institution's head coach, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved a junior academic status to qualify for this honor.

Heck carries a 3.79 grade point average and is a pre-law major. Immel carries a 3.81 grade point average and majors in accounting. Both are first time selections.

"Cavs Third at AMC Championships"

The Walsh University men's cross country team finished third overall in the AMC championship hosted by Houghton Saturday morning. The Cavaliers finished with 130 points, edging out Houghton who finished with 132. Malone easily won the competition with all seven of their runners finishing in the top 12. There were nine teams running in the event.

The Cavs were led by Justin Eddy (Fr., Perry, OH/HS) pictured left who finished 19th overall with a time of 26:25.91. Brandon Wollenberg (So., Canton, OH/Perry) followed in the 25th position with a time of 26:48.93. Jordan Groubert (So., Hartville, OH/Lake) finished third for Walsh in the 27th overall position with a time of 27:06.61. Dan Bauman (Jr., Paris, OH/St. Thomas) finished fourth for the Cavs and 29th overall with a time of 27:13.53. Nick Isla (Fr., Canton, OH/McKinley) crossed the line 10 seconds later with a time of 27:23.30. Rounding out the Cavaliers thin clads were Dan Opeka (Jr., Louisville, OH/St. Thoams) in 31st place with a time of 27:24.06 and Travis LeVan (Fr., Tallmadge, OH/HS) in 33rd place with a time of 27:31.21.

"Cavaliers Finish Second in Walsh-Malone Invitational"

Four events were held Saturday at the Walsh-Malone Invitational at Walsh and the Cavaliers competed in three of them. The day was highlighted by the men's cross country team finishing second to Malone in the 8K. The Cavaliers finished with 56 points as their top five runners finished in the top 16. The Pioneers finished with 19 points and had took the top four spots. Walsh finished ahead of Roberts Wesleyan, Case Western, Point Park, Hiram, and Daemen.

Justin Eddy (Fr., Perry, OH/HS) led the pack with a sixth place finish and a time of 26:03. Brandon Wollenberg (So., Canton, OH/Perry) finished shortly after in 11th place with time of 26:42. Jordan Groubert (So., Hartville, OH/Lake) and Dan Opeka (Jr., Louisville, OH/St. Thomas) crossed the finish line eight and nine seconds later for the 13th and 14th places, respectively. Dan Bauman (Jr., Paris, OH/St. Thomas) rounded out the Walsh thinclads with a time of 26:55 and a 16th place finish.

The men's team also ran in a 3K and finished fourth with 104 points. Malone won with 20 points, ahead of Wheeling Jesuit with 42 points and Notre Dame with 85 points.

Chase Harshbarger (So., Akron, OH/Archbishop Hoban) led the way with a 21st place finish at 10:06. Ryan Garrott (Jr., Georgetown, TX/HS) finished 23rd for the Cavs at 10:14, two seconds ahead of Devin Gates' (Fr., Warrensville Heights, OH/Warrensville) 24th place run. Joakim Fisk (Fr., Vasteras, Sweden/Rudbeckianska) finished 26th with a time of 10:26. Even Heck (Jr., Navarre, OH/CC Catholic) and Chris Noussias (So., Canton, OH/GlenOak) rounded out the team in 31st and 32nd place with times of 11:26 and 11:39, respectively.

WALSH MEN: Walsh (38-23) finished 10th in a field of 25 teams at the Gettysburg College Invitational last Saturday. John Hopkins University won the race.

Justin Eddy (Fr., Perry, OH/HS) paced the Cavs with a 13th place finish in a time of 26:40.17. Jordan Groubert (So., Hartville, OH/Lake) was next with a 37th place finish in a time of 27:19.82. Brandon Wollenberg (So., Canton, OH/Perry) finished 66th (27:48.66), Dan Opeka (Jr., Louisville, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) 78th (28:07.06) and Dan Bauman (Jr., Paris, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) 91st (28:14.75).

LAST YEAR MEN'S RACE: Walsh finished second in their final home meet of the season in the Walsh/Malone Invitational. Walsh's "A" team finished with a score of 58 points. Rival Malone easily took the event finishing with 19 points. Others in the race were Hiram College and Geneva College who tied for third with 91 points, Point Park who finished fifth with 122 points, and Walsh's "B" squad placing sixth with 154 points.

Matt Long crossed the finish line first for the Cavs at 27:48 and seventh place overall. The rest of the first team wasn't too far behind with the Luke Immel finishing second for Walsh with a time of 28:04, good for 13th overall. Jordan Groubert finished third for the team and 15th overall with a time of 28:34. He was immediately followed by Dan Bauman at 28:45 and Phil Kress at 28:50 to round out the team scoring at 16th and 17th overall. Also on running for the first squad was Adam Hrdlicka finishing 19th overall with a time of 29:03.

The "B" team was led by Kevin Sellers with a time of 29:29, good for 21st overall. Following were Lukas Slipski (Fr., Canfield, OH/HS) at 29:53, Adam Stilgenbauer at 30:43, Nick Reed at 31:29, and Caleb Stevanhagen at 32:55.

"Cavs 5th at All-Ohio Championships"

Walsh (23-14) finished 5th at the All-Ohio Championships held at Cedarville University's Elvin R.King Cross Country Course today. Shawnee State University (38) won, finishing just ahead of second place Malone University (40). Ashland University (61) placed third, followed by Cedarville University (72) and the Cavs (114).

Jordan Groubert (So., Hartville, OH/Lake) pictured left and Dan Opeka (Jr., Louisville, OH/St. Thomas) paced the Cavs finishing placing 28th at 30th respectively. Groubert finished 28th in a time of 27:06.1 and Opeka 30th in a time of 27:36.2.

Travis Levan (Fr., Tallmadge, OH/HS) right behind Opeka, finishing 31st (27:51.1), Matt Roshak (Fr., North Canton, OH/Hoover) placed 32nd (27:52.1), Dan Bauman (Jr., Paris, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) finished 33rd (27:52.5), Justin Eddy (Fr., Perry, OH/HS) 36th (28:08) and Luke Immel (Sr., Sugarcreek, OH/Garaway) 38th (28:31.9).

MEET INFORMATION

Walsh ran an outstanding race at the National Catholic Meet at the University of Notre Dame, finishing ninth in the field of 25 on September 17. Jordan Groubert (So., Hartville, OH/Lake) pictured left and Justin Eddy (Fr., Perry, OH/HS) have paced the Cavs in the early meets thus far. Groubert finished 45th at Notre Dame in a time of 25:30 and Eddy 56th (27:37). Eddy (Fr., Perry, OH/HS) paced the Cavs with a third-place finish at Walsh's Ric Sayre Invitational with a time of 26:18.03, while Groubert followed him with ninth-place finish with a time of 25:45.25.

Also look for strong efforts from Dan Bauman (Jr., Paris, OH/St. Thomas Aquinas) and Dan Opeka (Jr., Louisville, OH/St. Thomas).

Walsh finished eighth at the All-Ohio last year. Walsh's best race was a second place, which the produced in 1987 and duplicated in 1988. The Cavs place 11th nationally in '87.

"Cavs Ninth at Notre Dame"

(South Bend, IN) Walsh (20-9) ran an outstanding race and placed ninth in the 25-team field at the National Catholic Meet at the University of Notre Dame today.

Jordan Groubert (So., Hartville, OH/Lake) paced the Cavs, finishing 45th in a time of 25:30. Dan Bauman (Jr., Paris, OH/St. Thomas) was next for the Cavs with a 54th place finish (27:36). Justin Eddy (Fr., Perry, OH/HS) finished right behind Bauman in 56th place (27:37). Dan Opeka (Jr., Louisville, OH/St. Thomas) finished 68th (27:50), Matt Roshak (Fr., North Canton, OH/Hoover) 876th (27:59), Travis Levan (Fr., Tallmadge, OH/HS) 83rd (28:08) an Luke Immel (Sr., Sugarcreek, OH/Garaway) 88th (28:26).

"Cavaliers Finish Second in Ric Sayre Invitational"

The Walsh University men's cross country team opened the season with a second place finish in the annual Ric Sayre Invitational. Mount Union won the event by placing five runners in the top seven. The Cavs finished ahead of John Carroll, Roberts Wesleyan, Hiram, and Mount Vernon Nazarene.

Justin Eddy (Fr., Perry, OH/HS) pictured left paced the Cavs with a third-place overall finish with a time of 26:18.03. Jordan Groubert (So., Hartville, OH/Lake) followed him with ninth-place finish with a time of 25:45.25. Dan Opeka (Jr., Louisville, OH/St. Thomas) crossed the finish line next for Walsh at the 27:20.43 mark for 15th overall. The fourth and fifth place runners as well as the two alternates finished as a pack in order. Brandon Wollenberg (So., Canton, OH/Perry) was fourth for Walsh and finished at 27:29.17, just in front of Travis LeVan (Fr., Tallmadge, OH/HS) by .2 seconds. Dan Bauman (Jr., Paris, OH/St. Thomas) trailed right behind them and crossed at 27:37.94 and Matt Roshak (Fr., North Canton, OH/Hoover) finished a split second after at 27:38.29.

The Walsh thinclads return to action Friday, Sept. 17 at the National Catholic Meet at the University of Notre Dame (IN) with a start time of 3:30 p.m.

"Walsh University Teams Earn 2009-10 NAIA Scholar Team Awards"

Walsh University's men's track and cross country programs have received team scholar honors from the NAIA. The men's cross country team and the track team, both coached by veteran mentor Dan McCallion, have been recognized.

The men's track team compiled a 3.17 team GPA, while the cross country team compiled a 3.14 team GPA. A record total of 857 teams received NAIA Scholar Team awards.

For a team to be considered for the NAIA Scholar Team award, it must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) as defined by the institution. The team grade point average must include all varsity student-athletes certified as eligible.
