(MOUNT VERNON, Ohio) – Walsh split a doubleheader with Gannon on neutral grounds Friday afternoon. The Cavaliers (7-9) dropped the first game against the Golden Knights (4-10) 8-6 in the opener before a 6-2 win in the night cap.

After the Golden Knights opened the first game with two runs in the top of the first, Walsh got one run back after Jordan Shank (Jr.,Canton, OH/GlenOak) scored on a double play. Andrew Stalnaker (Fr., Canton, OH/Jackson) then sailed a ball over the fence in left center for his second home run of the season to tie the game at 2-2. The Cavaliers eventually took the lead later in the frame when Mike Lee (Sr., Barberton, OH/HS) singled and scored on a triple by Jake Palidar (Sr., Wadsworth, OH/HS/Marietta).

Gannon kept the action going to regain the lead with timely hitting and put up a four-spot in the top of the third and another couple in the fourth for an 8-3 lead.

Walsh picked up a big inning of its own to get back into the game with three runs as Stalnaker scored on a single by Sam Fondriest (Sr., Dover, OH/Tusc. Central Catholic), who later scored with Lee on a liner up the middle from Palidar.

Joe Tann (Jr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) took the loss to drop to 1-2 on the year. He gave up all eight runs in 3.1 innings of work.

In game two, Walsh again gave up two runs in the first. This time they responded in a big way with six runs in the bottom of the third. The inning was highlighted by a Brook Clark (So., Canton, OH/McKinley) double that scored Fondriest and Jason McPeek (So., Munroe-Falls, OH/HS/Akron) and made the score 6-2.

Brandon Whitslar (Jr., Seville, OH/Cloverleaf) went the distance to improve to 2-0 on the season. He allowed two runs, both unearned, on five hits with eight strikeouts and one walk.

The Cavaliers return to action with another twin bill on the road tomorrow as they travel to Pittsburgh to take on Mount Union.
