3.15.14 BASEBALL: Cavs Split with Mount Union

(WEST MIFFLIN, Pa.) Walsh (8-10) split a double header with the Universitty of Mount Union (10-1) at West Mifflin High School today. The Cavs won the opener 7-3, but fell 12-4 in the nightcap. Walsh is scheduled to open GLIAC play at home with Malone University in a double header on Wednesday. Both games will be broadcast live on Teamline.

Walsh erased a 2-0 deficit to win the opener. After the Cavs tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth the Purple Raiders regained the lead with a single run in the ffith. Walsh would take the lead in the top of the eighth inning with a five-run outburst, sending ten men to the plate. After the Cavs tied the game on a Mike Lee (Sr., Barberton, OH/HS) single, Jason McPeek (So., Stow, OH/Munroe-Falls/Akron) drew a bases loaded walk to give the Cavs the lead.  Brook Clark (So., Canton, OH/McKinley) then walked to give Walsh a 5-3 lead, and a sacrifice fly from Justin Clements put Walsh up 6-3. Jordan Shank (Jr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) then followed with a single for an 7-3 lead. Shank went 3-4, and Clark was 1-2 with a sacrfice fly and two RBI. Danny Roper (Jr., Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) picked his first win of the season in relief, and Neal Edwards (Jr., Silver Lake, OH/Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary) worked the final two innings for his first save of the year.

Mount Union scored in all but two innings in game two in gaining the split. Walsh trailed 3-2 in the fourth when the Purple Raiders scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good. They would score in each of the next three innings to take a 12-2 lead. Walsh would tally twice in the eighth. Mount Union banged out 16 hits off of four Cavalier pitcher. Jared Bettura (Jr., Canfield, OH/HS) started and was charged with the loss. Andrew Stalnaker (Fr., Canton, OH/Jackson) and Justin Clements (Sr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) each had two hits, and McPeek drove in three runs.
