3.16.12 SOFTBALL: Cavs Sweep Salem International; Host Grand Valley State Saturday

Softball, 2012-03-16

Walsh swept Salem International (W.Va.) in a doubleheader with both games being decided by five runs. The Cavaliers (9-7) took the first game 5-0 and defeated the Tigers (8-8) in the second game 9-4

The Cavs took the first game and recorded their third straight shutout at home. Kendra Gerber (Jr., Sugarcreek, OH/Garaway) started the scoring when she hit the ball off the right field fence for a double that brought home Crystal Pfleger (Jr., Mogadore, OH/Field), who reached on a walk, in the second inning. Gerber later scored on a long single by Jenna Rosso (Sr., Amherst, OH/Steele).

Gerber scored again, along with Eryn Simon (So., Oregon, OH/Clay), on a hit by Maggie Yavorsky (Sr., Norton, OH/HS) in the fourth inning. Kayla Marcus (So., Bergholz, OH/Edison) scored the final run in the fifth as Pfleger hit her in.

Erin Ebert (Jr., Jeromesville, OH/Hillsdale) tossed a complete game shutout to improve to 4-4. She gave up only two hits with five strike outs and five walks.

In the second game, Walsh led 6-0 after five innings and staved off a comeback by Salem in the last two frames. The Tigers scored two runs in the sixth and seventh innings and left the bases loaded in the final frame, but the Cavs’ trio of runs in the sixth kept the game in check.

Walsh’s two, three, and four hitters had strong games and accounted for seven of the team’s 13 hits. Marcus was almost always a threat as she went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Chelsy Testa (So., Uniontown, OH/Lake) and Kelsey Ford (Sr., Boardman, OH/HS) each went 2-for-4. Testa hit in three runs and Ford batted in a pair.

Ford also picked up the win to improve to 3-2. She struck out three and walked four while being credited with all four of the Tigers’ runs.

Walsh returns to action tomorrow as it plays host to current GLIAC member Grand Valley State University in an afternoon doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
