3.16.13 MEN'S LACROSSE: No. 9 Seton Hill Overpowers Cavaliers in ECAC Opener
Men's Lacrosse, 2013-03-16
In its second game as a varsity sport, Walsh played one of the more difficult teams in the nation and fell 21-4 at No. 9 Seton Hill. It was the first conference game of the year for the Cavaliers (0-2, 0-1). The Griffins improved to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the ECAC.
The Cavaliers fell behind early as the high-octane Seton Hill offense propelled the hosts to a 7-0 lead. Walsh finally got on the board when Mason Axline (Jr., 5-7, Green, OH/HS) scored unassisted with 1:40 remaining in the first quarter. The Griffins responded by scoring the next eight goals and went into the halftime break up 15-1.
In the second half, Walsh came out on fire and scored three of the first four goals. Ben Stephens (Jr., 6-0, Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) added Walsh’s second goal less than two minutes into the second half. Ian Maurer (Jr., 6-2, Jackson Township, OH/HS) then made it 15-3 on an assist from Stephens with 7:29 to go in the third. After Seton Hill scored again, Tyler Murphy (Sr., 6-4, Canton, OH/Jackson) added the Cavs’ final goal with 2:39 left in the quarter.
Walsh will face its second-straight top 10 opponent next week as the Cavs travel to top-ranked Mercyhurst on Sunday, March 24 with a start time of 3 p.m.
