3.2.13 MEN'S BASKETBALL: Walsh Retires Mayor's Cup for Record Sixth Time

(North Canton, OH) Walsh (18-8, 14-8) closed the season in grand style, by defeating Malone University (14-12, 11-11) 83-77 in the 49th Annual Mayor’s Cup game. The win gives the Cavs a season sweep of Malone, and also retires the Cup for a record sixth time. Walsh now leads the all-time series 67-40 and the Mayor’s Cup series 30-19. The win also gives the Cavs a second place finish in the GLIAC South in their first year in the conference.
The Cavs led from start-to-finish in downing the Pioneers for the 27th time in the last 30 games. Kenny Kornowski (6-9, Sr., Marshallville, OH/Smithville) scored 11 first half points, as Walsh led by 10 points twice, and took a 36-29 advantage into the locker room at the half.
The second half was all Kornowski and Jeff Copeland (6-5, So., Toledo, OH/St. John’s Jesuit), as the pair combined for 28 second half points. Walsh increased the lead to double figures eight minutes into the half, and led by as many as 16 points (66-50) with 7:09 to play.
Malone would close to within six points with under a minute to play, but would get no closer.
Kornowski, in his final game in a Walsh uniform, led all scorers with 22 points on 10-16 from the floor. He also tied for rebound honors with 8. Copeland tallied 21 points, connecting on 6-9 from the floor and 9-10 from the foul line. Rian Burrell (6-3, So., Zanesville, OH/HS) added 15 points and Brad DuPont 6-0, Jr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) played an outstanding all around game with 10 points, 6 assists, 4 steals and 3 rebounds.
Zach Bates led Malone with 22 points.
Walsh shot 51% from the field and out rebounded Malone 38-31.
The season sweep was the 19th all-time for the Cavs.
