3.2.13 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Second Half Dooms Cavs in Mayor's Cup

Women's Basketball, 2013-03-02

Walsh’s five-game Mayor’s Cup win streak came to an end as Malone’s strong second half propelled the visitors to a 65-49 win. The Cavaliers (8-18, 5-17) last lost the Mayor’s Cup in the 2006-07 campaign by a 74-72 score at Osborne Hall. The Pioneers finish their season with a record of 14-12 overall and 10-12 in the conference.

The Cavaliers started the game with a hot first half that saw them shoot 51.9 percent from the floor. Walsh led by 11 on two occasions with the last coming at 22-11 after Audrey Badovick (So., 5-5, Norwalk, OH/St. Paul) scored on a jumper with 9:49 to go in the first half. That’s about the time Malone started to set things in motion as the Pioneers went on an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to three points. Still, Walsh was able to take a 30-26 lead into the halftime break.

In the second stanza, both teams battled back and forth for the first seven minutes. Malone eventually took the lead at 34-33, but a 3-pointer and a layup by Badovick put Walsh back up 38-34. Then the Pioneers caught fire and went on a 17-1 run as Walsh went 6:16 without a made field goal. Malone led by as many as 19.

The Cavs shot a cold 24 percent in the second half and were outrebounded 47-23 for the game.

Whitney Dabbelt (So., 6-0, West Carrollton, OH/Archbishop Alter) paced the Cavs with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field. Tracy Payne (Sr., 5-5, Danville, OH/HS/Notre Dame College) scored eight points in her final game in a Walsh uniform.

Malone’s Sydnee Penn and Leslie Raifsnider scored 15 points for game-high honors. The Pioneers also received a 16-rebound effort by Lindsy Snider.
