3.2.14 BASEBALL: Tampa Sweeps Weekend Series From Cavs
(TAMPA) – Walsh was swept by No. 1 Tampa after a 13-1 decision in the Sunshine State Sunday afternoon. The Cavaliers are now 1-6 on the short season while the Spartans improve to 15-1.
The Spartans scored in six of the first seven frames to take a commanding lead. Walsh did threaten early as they made the score 2-1 in the third inning as Andrew Bonnette (Jr., 6-0, Tallmadge, OH/HS) and Jordan Shank (Jr., 6-0, Canton, OH/GlenOak) paired together to score a run. After Shank led off the inning with a single to left and advanced to second on a sacrifice, Bonnette placed one in the gap in left center for the RBI.
The Cavs then had the opportunity to tie or take the lead after Jason McPeek (So., 6-4, Stow, OH/Munroe-Falls/Akron) singled down the line, but the Spartans retired the next two batters to leave two Cavs stranded. Tampa responded and equaled Walsh’s run in the third before they added three in the fourth and two in the fifth.
Matt Iosue (Fr., 5-9, Mayfield, OH/HS) took the loss as he gave up six runs before being chased in the fourth inning.
Walsh will look to rebound tomorrow on neutral grounds with a contest against former conference foe Cedarville. First pitch is set to take place at Jack Russell Stadium, former spring training home of the Philadelphia Phillies, at 2 p.m.
