3.2.14 MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD: Groubert Finishes Fifth, Makes NCAA Provo Mark
Men's Track & Field, 2014-03-02
(HILLSDALE, Mich.) – Walsh finished the GLIAC Track and Field Indoor Championships 11th overall with the Cavaliers placing in two events. Justin Groubert (Jr., Hartville, OH/Lake) finished fifth in the mile run for four points while the 4x400 meter relay finished seventh for two points.
Grand Valley State ran away with the team title with 162 points as Ashland earned runner-up honors with 138.5.
Groubert was easily the highlight of the day for the Cavaliers as he ran the mile in 4:15.12, which gives him a provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA championships later this month. He was just four seconds down from the winner Brian Baum from Ashland.
The 4x400 relay team of Craig Dougherty (Jr., Clinton, OH/Manchester), Paul Sonego (Fr., North Ridgeville, OH/HS), Groubert, and Sherman Kortze (Fr., Magnolia, OH/Sandy Valley) finished the race with a time of 3:23.43. Ashland won the event with a time of 3:15.52.
Should Groubert race in the national meet, it will be held on March 14 and 15 in Salem, N.C. For the rest of the squad, the outdoor season will be the next time Walsh competes. The first meet is on Saturday, March 22, at the Amy Adams Invitational in Muskingum.
