3.20.14 BASEBALL: Big Innings lift Walsh to 14-5 win over Malone in GLIAC Opener
(CANTON, Ohio) On the strength of a five-run fourth inning, and a four-run eighth inning, Walsh (9-10, 1-0) won their GLIAC opener 14-5 over rival Malone University (5-11, 0-1) 14-5 at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium today. The two teams complete their season series with a double header at Walsh next Tuesday at 1 pm.
Malone took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a two-out RBI single from Hayden Mobley. The Cavs were held hitless through the first three innings by Malone right-hander Gary Lawrence when they broke through in the top of the fourth. Andrew Stalnaker (Fr., Canton, OH/Jackson) reached base on an error to open the inning, and Brook Clark (So., Canton, OH/McKinley) followed with a walk. Sam Fondriest (Sr., Dover, OH/Tuscarawas Central Catholic) then walked with one out to load the bases. Mike Lee (Sr., Barberton, OH/HS) then singled through the left side to give the Cavs the lead for good at 2-1. The Cavs took a 4-1 lead when Jordan Shank (Jr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) reached on an error, and then a sacrifice fly by Drew Link (Sr., Granville, OH/HS). Shank and Justin Clements (Sr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) then put together a double steal, when Shank reaching second, and Clements coming home.
Walsh starter Brandon Whitslar (Jr., Seville, OH/Cloverleaf) then found the groove, retiring 13 of 14 Pioneers with nine strikeouts. Whitslar went six, allowing one run on five hits with nine strikeouts to get the win to improve to 3-0.
Walsh would add three more runs in the sixth to lead 8-1.
Malone would trim the lead to 8-5, with four runs in the bottom of the seventh. But Walsh would answer with four runs in the eighth and two in the ninth.
Shank was 3-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Link was 2-2 with two RBI and Jake Palidar (Sr., Wadsworth, OH/HS) drove in three runs. Clark was 1-2 with three walks and an RBI, and Clements scored three runs.
Walsh is home for a three-game GLIAC series on Saturday and Sunday against Hillsdale College. The teams play at twinbill on Saturday at 2 pm, and single game on Sunday at 1:30 pm. All three games will be broadcast live on TEAMLINE.
