3.22.13 WOMEN'S LACROSSE: Cavs Fall Short in First Game

Women's Lacrosse, 2013-03-22

(BEREA, Ohio) – In its first game of its inaugural season, Walsh was defeated by Baldwin-Wallce 9-4 on a chilly night. The Yellow Jackets (2-2), who are also in their first year, pulled away late in the game to score the victory.

The Cavaliers started out of the gates strong as Ivy Meloy (Jr., 5-8, Cuyahoga Falls, OH/HS) scored the first two goals of the year in the first 10 minutes of the game. Both scores came unassisted. Baldwin-Wallace was quick to respond, however, as the Jackets tied the game in the next five minutes. With 7:28 remaining in the first half, Mary Myers (Sr., 5-5, Stow, OH/Walsh Jesuit) scored on an assist by Lauren Bricker (So., 5-2, Louisville, OH/HS) during a man-up opportunity to give the Cavs the lead once again, but Baldwin-Wallace scored just over a minute later to notch things up again. Neither team could find the back of the net for the rest of the half.

In the second half, the Jackets took a 5-3 lead before Lauren Griswold (Jr., 5-6, Strongsville, OH/HS) scored unassisted with 20:15 remaining. Unfortunately for the Cavs, it was their final goal of the game. Baldwin-Wallace was then able to close out the game by scoring the last four goals.

In addition to her pair of goals, Meloy recorded three ground balls and one caused turnover. Tia Tyler (Fr., Columbus, OH/St. Francis DeSales) took the loss in goal, but came up with 10 saves on the night.

The Cavaliers will return to action Wednesday, April 3, when they host Alderson-Broaddus in a GLIAC contest. The game is set to start at 4 p.m.
