3.24.13 BASEBALL: Warriors Win Rubber Game
(North Canton, OH) With the game temperature hovering around the freezing mark, Wayne State (11-7, 2-1) and Walsh (7-6, 1-2) played the rubber game of a three-game series. When all was said and done, Wayne State came away a little bit warmers, as they won the series with a 5-3 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athlertic Conference victory.
Despite walking the leadoff batter in each of the first four innings, Walsh starter David Roper (Sr., Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) limited the damage, and the game was tied 2-2 after four innings. Roper went six innings, allowing two runs, one earned, while scattering five hits. He left the game with the score tied at 2-2.
Wayne State snapped the tie, and took the lead for good with two runs in the top of the seventh inning against Walsh reliever Mike Daugherty (So., Mayfield Village, OH/HS). Chris Gebara's one out single drove in the go-ahead run and a bases loaded walk provided the fourth run.
Walsh came to life in the eighth inning and cut the lead to 4-3 on Steve Wido's (Sr., North Royalton, OH/Padua Franciscan) first homer the season, a blast over the right field fence. Walsh then strung consecutive singles together from Trevor Smith (Sr., Parma, OH/Holy Name), Tim Stinson (Sr., Alliance, OH/Marlington) and Andy DePeel (Sr., Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) to load the bases with one out. Warriror closer Clayton Ruch then induced RJ Vukovich (Sr., North Canton, OH/Hoover) to bounce into an inning ending double play to end the threat.
Wayne State would add an insurance run in the top of the ninth.
Wayne State starter David Frederick went seven plus innings and picked-up the win to even his record at 1-1. Daugherty took the loss in relief for the Cavs to fall to 0-1. Ruch earned his fifth save of the season.
Walsh is scheduled to play Malone in a GLIAC twin bill at Thurman Munson Stadium on Tuesday at 12 pm, then host the Pioneers in a single game on Wednesday at 3:30 pm.
