3.25.12 SOFTBALL: Cavs Split With Celtics; Ruppel Hits Grand Slam
Walsh split its conference opening doubleheader with visiting Carlow by winning game one 7-0 and losing game two 10-4 Sunday afternoon. The Cavaliers (13-11) were on a three-game win streak after the victory in game one. The Celtics are currently the first place team in the American Mideast Conference.
The first game was close for the first three frames until the Cavs brought the bats alive in the fourth. Walsh first got on the scoreboard with a grand slam by Calee Ruppel (Fr., Mogadore, OH/HS) , her first home run of the year. The shot over the fence in left-center field plated Katie Musgrave (Fr., Doylestown, OH/Chippewa), Crystal Pfleger (Jr., Mogadore, OH/Field), and Kendra Gerber (Jr., Sugarcreek, OH/Garaway). Musgrave was pinch-running for Kelsey Ford (Sr., Boardman, OH/HS) who reached on a single. Jenna Rosso (Sr., Amherst, OH/Steele) followed that up with a solo home run, also her first, over the left field fence to put the Cavs up 5-0. A pair of insurance runs followed in the sixth to set the final score.
Ford earned the complete game three-hit shutout win to improve her record to 5-2.
Game two was a different story as a couple of errors helped Carlow score seven runs in the second inning to inundate Walsh. The Cavs eventually got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning with a solo home run by Erin Ebert (Jr., Jeromesville, OH/Hillsdale, her first of the year. Walsh scored two more in the fifth, but Carlow followed with three runs in the top of the sixth inning to keep a comfortable lead.
Hanna Dodson (Fr., Newark, OH/Licking Valley) picked up the loss to fall to 2-4 on the season.
The Cavaliers return to action on Tuesday when they travel down the road to play Malone in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
