3.27.12 BASEBALL: Cavs Squander Five-Run Lead in Opener; Drop Pair at Cedarville

(Cedarville, OH) Walsh (11-13) dropped a double header at Cedarville University (16-4) today by the scores of 8-7 and 3-1.  The Cavs are now idle until the weekend, when the travel to Fisher College (MA) for back-to-back double headers on Saturday and Sunday.

Walsh jumped on the Yellow Jackets for three runs in the first inning and two in the second in the opener.  Tyler Jones (Sr., Mansfield, OH/Madison), R.J. Vukovich (Jr., North Canton, OH/Hoover) and Steve Wido (Jr., North Royalton, OH/Padua Franciscan) each had RBI singles in the first.  Forrest Boggs (Jr., Suffield, OH/Field/Mercyhurst) stroked a RBI single in the second and Wido drew a bases loaded walk. 

Cedarville got a run back in the bottom of the second inning and then took the lead with a five-run fourth to chase Walsh starter Billy Gura (Sr., Sagamore Hills, OH/ St. Peter Chanel).  Walsh answered with two runs in the fifth when Wido scored on a passed ball and Kyler King (Jr., Uniontown, OH/Lake) singled home Vukovich.

The Yellow Jackets would rally with two runs on four walks and a passed ball to regain the lead in the home half of the fifth.  Zach Speer (Jr., Stow, OH/HS), who came on in relief of Gura, was tagged with the loss and falls to 0-2.

Walsh scored first in the nightcap with an unearned run in the first.  Cedarville tied the game in the bottom of the inning and scored two in the third to win it.  Walsh’s Joe Tann (Fr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) went the distance and was charged with the loss (1-1).  Tann fanned five and surrendered only two earned runs.  Walsh only had two hits.

On the Diamond:  First baseman Forrest Boggs leads the Cavs in hitting (.377), home runs (3), RBI (24), slugging percentage (.636), multi-hit games (8), multi-RBI games (7) and put together one of three ten-game hitting streaks…  Tim Stinson currently has a ten-game hitting streak and Drew Link had one earlier this season… the Cavs have six starters batting over .300… Stinson is tied for the team lead in doubles (9) and hits (29) with Boggs and is second with 18 RBI… Travis Danner and Billy Gura each have three wins to lead the team… freshman Joe Tann has team-best 2.50 ERA in four appearances... Tann is 1-1… David Roper has completed three of his five starts
