3.29.13 BASEBALL: Boggs Walk-Off Single Wins for Cavs

Baseball, 2013-03-29

(North Canton, OH) Forrest Boggs (Sr., Suffield, OH/Field) one out walk-off bases loaded single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted Walsh (10-7, 4-3) to a dramatic 5-4 win over Ashland University (16-5, 5-1) in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game. The win was the third straight for the Cavs, and snapped Ashland's eight-game winning streak.  The two teams play a 1 pm double header at Walsh tomorrow.

Walsh scored single runs in the first and and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. Andrew Bonnette (So., Tallmadge, OH/HS) led off the first with a double and scored on a fielders choice. After Bonnette walked in the third, Drew Link (Jr., Granville, OH/HS) singled to center and Justin Clements (Jr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) singled to right, scoring Bonnette, and giving the Cavs a 2-0 lead.

Ashland tied the game in the sixth inning on a two-out, two-run homerun to left by Alex Sortwell off of Walsh starter Jeff Kotlar (Sr., Euclid, OH/HS).

Walsh took the lead back in the bottom of the seventh, on Sam Fondriest's (Jr., Dover, OH/ Tuscarawas Central Catholic) two-out, two run homer.

Ashland rallied with two runs in the eighth to knot the game at 4-4.

Walsh opened the bottom of the ninth with Bonnette reaching base on an error by the pitcher. On a slow chop to first, Ashland pitcher Cole Hudson dropped the relay from Tyler Gray, putting Bonnette aboard. With Link looking to sacrifice, he bunted back to the mound and Hudson's throw skipped past first putting runners on second and third with nobody out. Clements then walked to load the bases, setting the scene for Boggs. Boggs then drove a 3-1 pitch to the base of the fence in left, scoring Bonnett with the winning run.

Roberto Morales (Sr., Canfield, OH/Cardinal Mooney) worked the final 1.2 innings to pick-up his second win of the season. Kotlar was superb, working 7.1 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with five strikeouts.

Link was 3-4 for the Cavs and Bonnette was 2-4 with three runs scored.
