(Clearwater, FL) R.J. Vukovich (Sr., North Canton, OH/Hoover) singled home Tim Stinson (Sr., Alliance, OH/HS) in the bottom of ninth inning to cap a two-run rally to give the Cavs a 7-6 win in the season opener against Saginaw Valley State University (0-1) at Jack Russell Field. Walsh tied the game when Trevor Smith (Sr., Parma, OH/Holy Name) scored from second base on a throwing error by the pitcher. Saginaw took a 6-5 lead in the top of the ninth inning on a passed ball.

Walsh then improved to 2-0, with an 18-3 romp over Urbana University in the second game.

Saginaw took the early lead with two runs in the second inning against Walsh starter Jeff Kotlar (Sr., Euclid, OH/HS). One of the runs was unearned. Walsh rallied with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-2 lead. The Cavs' runs scored on an error, a fielder's choice and a two-out single to right-center by Drew Link (Jr., Granville, OH/HS).

Saginaw regained the lead with two runs in the fourth inning. Walsh then took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth inning. Smith started two out rally with a double down the left field line, and after Stinson walked, Smith scored on a error to tie the game.  Vukovich then singled through the left side to score Stinson, and give Walsh a 5-4 lead.

Kotlar went seven strong innings for the Cavs in his first start since Tommy John surgery two years ago. He allowed two earned runs on six hits, with three strikeouts, and was relieved by Mike Daugherty (So., Mayfield Village, OH/HS) in the eighth inning. With two outs and nobody on in the eighth, Saginaw tied the game (5-5) with a triple and single.

Smith, who went 3-4, started the ninth inning rally with a one-out single, and then moved to second base on Stinson's infield single. Andy DePeel (Sr., Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) then reached base on a throwing error by the pitcher, which scored Smith to tie the game.  Vukovich's single through the box then gave the Cavs their first win of the season.
