Baseball, 2012-03-31

Walsh split a doubleheader with hosting Fisher to open the conference season for both teams Saturday afternoon. The Cavs (12-14, 1-1) dropped the first game to the Falcons (10-16, 1-1) 4-2, but rebounded in the second game 6-0.

The Cavaliers received a great pitching performance from Travis Danner (Sr., 5-11, Medina, OH/HS/CCC) as he tossed a complete game shutout. Danner gave up four hits and struck out nine batters against just one walk in his seven innings of work. He is now 4-1 on the season with a 2.88 ERA.

On the offensive end, Walsh took control of the game with four runs in the top of the third. Jake Palidar (So., 5-10, Wadsworth, OH/HS/Marietta) started the rally after reaching and scoring on a pair of errors. The Cavs then broke things loose as Forrest Boggs (Jr., 6-2, Suffield, OH/Field/Mercyhurst) hit a two-RBI triple and Tyler Jones (Sr., 5-10, Mansfield, OH/Madison) followed with a double to bring him home. Walsh added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh to set the final score.

In the first game, Walsh scored in the opening inning when Trevor Smith (Jr., 5-10, Parma, OH/Holy Name) scored on a wild pitch. Fisher responded with a run to tie in the bottom half of the inning, and proceeded to take the lead with a run in the third. The Falcons added two insurance runs in the fifth. Walsh added another run in the sixth, but could get no closer. David Roper (Jr., 6-2, Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) took the loss to fall to 2-4 on the year.

Both teams will meet again for another twin bill on Sunday. The first pitch is scheduled for noon.
