3.31.14 SOFTBALL: Cavs Take Bite Out of Bulldogs
(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) - Walsh swept visiting Ferris State in a conference twin bill by scores of 2-1 in eight innings and 6-4 on Monday afternoon. The pair of wins improves the Cavaliers’ record to 13-10 overall and puts them at .500 in the conference with a 3-3 mark. The Bulldogs were playing in their conference opener and are now 5-8 overall and 0-2 in the GLIAC.
Casi Rohr (Jr., Massillon, OH/Perry/Toledo) was dominant in the first game as she picked up the win to improve to 7-6 on the season. She allowed just one run on five hits while reaching double digits in strikeouts with 12 against one walk in the complete game.
Walsh originally got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. After Eryn Simon (Sr., Oregon, OH/Clay) reached on a fielder’s choice and moved to second on another, she was able to cross home plate after a fielding error on the second baseman allowed Rachel Dedinsky (Sr., Cuyahoga Falls, OH/Akron SVSM) to reach safely.
Ferris State later tied the game in the seventh after the Bulldogs led off the frame with a double and single to bring in a runner to avoid the shutout.
Once in extra innings, Walsh made quick work of the Bulldogs in the eighth. Jenna Head (Fr., Mantua, OH/Crestwood) provided the walk-off run after she was safe at second following an error in an attempt to get the force out. After the ball went into the outfield, the center fielder mishandled the ball and allowed Head to score to end the game.
In Game 2, Walsh again took an early lead and had to hold off a Ferris State comeback attempt. The Cavs scored single runs in the first and second before they put a three-spot up in the top of the fifth. The Bulldogs rallied with four runs across the fourth through sixth innings to make it a 5-4 game with one inning left. Walsh was able to get an insurance run on a homer by Head, the Cavs’ second of the game in addition to Presley Destro’s (Jr., Mogadore, OH/HS/Catawba) solo shot in the second, to set the final score.
Marisa Bondoni (So., Alliance, OH/HS) picked up the win after she pitched 4.1 innings. She allowed three runs on six hits with five strikeouts and a walk to improve to 5-2. Quartni Whited (Fr., Louisville, OH/HS) came on in relief to pitch 2.2 innings and earned the save.
Walsh returns to action again tomorrow with yet another home conference doubleheader. This time the Cavaliers entertain rival Malone with the first pitch slated for 3:30 p.m.
