3.4.14 BASEBALL: Cavs Sweep Oakland City

Baseball, 2014-03-04

(CLEARWATER, Florida) – Walsh swept a doubleheader against Oakland City by scores of 5-0 and 8-1 in impressive fashion Tuesday. With the pair of wins, the Cavaliers are now 4-6 with three consecutive wins. The Mighty Oaks drop to 1-2 after starting their season on Monday.

Jared Bettura (Jr., 6-1, Canfield, OH/HS) pitched a gem in a one-hit shutout. He carried a no-hitter into the seventh where it was broken up by the Mighty Oaks’ Kingsley Alarcon singled to lead off the bottom of the final frame. He reached double digits in strike outs with 10 and walked only two.

On the offensive end, the Cavaliers were smart on the base paths with stolen bases and miscues by Oakland City’s battery. As a result, Walsh scored single runs in all but the first and fourth innings for the 5-0

In the backend of the twin bill, the Cavaliers gave up the first run early but answered in spectacular fashion with multiple runs scored in the second, third, and fourth frames.

Sherman Kruger (Fr., 6-2, Chagrin Falls, OH/Kenston) pitched well for Walsh as he gave up just the one run on five hits with four strikeouts against two walks. Matt Shelton (Sr., 6-2, Youngstown, OH/Hubbard) came on in relief to pitch the seventh of the second game.

Andrew Stalnaker (Fr., 6-5, Canton, OH/Jackson) was impressive on the day as he went a combined 4-for-8 from the plate, two of the hits being doubles, with four RBI and a pair of runs scored. Sam Fondriest
(Sr., 6-2, Dover, OH/Tusc. Central Catholic) also had a strong day as he went 3-for-4 with two RBI, three runs scored, and three stolen bases. Drew Link (Sr., 5-10, Granville, OH/HS) also crossed the plate thrice for the Cavs.

Because of rain threatening Thursday’s game, Walsh will now play Felician College on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m.
