3.5.14 BASEBALL: Cavs Fly Over Felician

Baseball, 2014-03-05

(CLEARWATER, Florida) – Walsh won its fourth consecutive game in three days with an 11-4 victory over Felician College (N.J.) in a rescheduled game at Jack Russell Stadium Wednesday morning. The Cavaliers (5-6) and Golden Falcons (3-7) were originally supposed to meet on Thursday, but with the strong possibility of rain in the forecast, the game was moved up a day.

Felician struck first in the opening at bat after Scott De Jong scored on a single from Joe Petosa. The Cavs answered when they took the lead in the bottom of the second and chased the Golden Falcon’s starting pitcher John-Paul Codelia. Walsh batted around the order and scored five runs while doing so. It turns out it was all the Cavs would need despite a late
rally by Felician.

The Cavaliers added another pair in the third. Both teams exchanged runs in the seventh. While the Falcons left the bases loaded in the seventh, they scored a pair in the eighth to cut the deficit to 8-4, but Walsh answered with a trio of runs to set up the final score.

Brandon Whitslar (Jr., 6-1, Seville, OH/Cloverleaf) gave up one run on six hits with two strikeouts and two walks in six innings of work to earn his first win of the year. Donnie Macko (Sr., 6-0, Clinton, OH/Northwest/Wheeling Jesuit) and Alex Zander (So., 6-1, Brooklyn Heights, OH/Heidleberg) came on in relief to close out the game.

Jordan Shank (Jr., 6-0, Canton, OH/GlenOak), Justin Clements (Sr., 5-9, Massillon, OH/Jackson), Jason McPeek (So., 6-4, Stow, OH/Munroe-Falls/Akron), and Jake Palidar (Sr., 5-10, Wadsworth, OH/HS/Marietta) all had strong games at the plate with each recording two RBI. Nate Stuntz (Sr., 6-1, Delaware, OH/Hayes) scored thrice for Walsh, while Drew Link (Sr.,
5-10, Granville, OH/HS) and Andrew Stalnaker Fr., 6-5, Canton, OH/Jackson) crossed home plate two times.

The Cavs will take an off day on Thursday before a split-doubleheader against Oakland City and Felician on Friday. Their first
game is scheduled for 2 p.m. Both will be nine innings games.
