3.5.14 MEN'S LACROSSE: Cavs Pick Up Where They Left Off In Win Over AB
Men's Lacrosse, 2014-03-05
(PHILIPPI, W.Va.) – Walsh started its second varsity season on the right foot and in a similar fashion to the way it ended the first season. To cap off 2013, the Cavaliers defeated the Battlers 12-11 in overtime. This time, the Cavs (1-0, 1-0) won 13-12 over AB (0-4, 0-2) in ECAC action.
Late game heroics were once again a factor in the game as Alex Hudgens (Fr., 5-10, South Lyon, MI/HS) made the goal of the day and was impressive overall in his college debut. With the Cavaliers down 12-11 after a go-ahead goal by the Battlers, Ian Maurer (Sr., 6-1, Jackson Township, OH/HS) tied the game up on an unassisted score with just under two minutes left in the match. Hudgens then added his fourth and final goal of the game 35 seconds later for the game winner on an assist from Bryan Crim (Fr., 5-7, Reading,
PA/Exeter Twp. Sr.).
Crim himself had quite a game with three goals, three ground balls, and two caused turnovers. Walsh controlled the time of possession and outshot the Battlers 45-29. Walsh also won 21 of the 29 face-offs.
Despite this, Alderson-Broaddus nearly took control of the game early on. After the Battlers were up 2-1 after the first quarter, AB started the second period with three consecutive goals with a man-advantage for
a 5-1 lead. Walsh quickly cut the deficit to one with three goals of its own in four minutes.
Jeff Balzano (Sr., 6-0, Chesterland, OH/West Geauga) earned the win between the pipes after playing 52:12 with six saves.
The Cavaliers will be back in action and look to improve to 2-0 against Young Harris on Monday. It will be Walsh’s first home game and is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
