Baseball, 2013-03-07

(Lakeland, FL) Walsh (3-4) lost both games of a split double header today. Rockhurst University edged the Cavs 2-1 in the first game. Cedarville University then won the second game 8-4. The Cavs are back in action tomorrow morning with a double header against Oakland City University.  Game one is slated to start at 10 am.

Rockhurst pitching limited the Cavs to just two hits in the opener. Walsh’s R. J. Vukovich (Sr., North Canton, OH/Hoover) drove in Forrest Boggs (Sr., Suffield, OH/Field) to give the Cavs a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. Rockhurst would rally with single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to post the come-from-behind win.

Zach Speer (Sr., Stow, OH/HS) went the distance for the Cavs and was tagged with the loss, despite allowing just two runs on seven hits. He is 1-1 on the season.

Walsh jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning in the Cedarville game on a Boggs sacrifice fly, and a Austin Szink (Fr., Canton,  OH/Jackson) RBI single. The Yellow Jackets would answer with four runs in the bottom of the third inning off of Walsh starter Brandon Whitslar (So., Seville, OH/Cloverleaf). Walsh trailed 5-3 when Andrew Bonnette’s (So., Tallmadge, OH/HS) RBI double in the fifth inning cut the lead to 5-4. Cedarville would pull away from the Cavs with a run in the fifth inning and two in the seventh. Whitslar was charged with the loss and falls to 0-1.

Sam Fondriest (Jr., Dover, OH/Tuscarawas Central Catholic) went 3-4 and Justin Clements (Jr., Massillon, OH/Jackson) clubbed two doubles.
