3.8.13 BASEBALL: Cavs Take Two from Oakland City
(Lakeland, FL) Walsh improved to 5-4 after taking a double header from Oakland City University by the scores of 9-3 and 5-1 at Jack Russell Stadium today. The Cavs conclude their Florida trip against Saginaw Valley at 9 am on Saturday morning in a single game.
Jeff Kotlar (6-2, Sr., Euclid, OH/HS) continued his comeback from Tommy John surgery with his second strong outing and first win of the season. Kotlar worked six innings and allowed only two runs on six hits. He fanned seven and did not walk a batter. After Oakland took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning, Walsh answered with two runs to tie the game. Forrest Boggs (Sr., Suffield, OH/FIeld) and John Stephenson (Jr., New Philadelphia, OH/HS) produced RBI singles.
Walsh exploded for seven runs in the fifth to seal the verdict. Boggs, who was 3-3, drove in the run to put the Cavs ahead. Andy DePeel (Sr., Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) followed with an RBI single, Sam Fondriest (Jr., New Philadelphia, OH/Tuscarawas Central Catholic) doubled in a run, Andrew Bonnette (So., Tallmadge, OH/HS) singled in a run, and Drew Link (Jr., Granville, OH/HS) had a two-run double.
David Roper (Sr., Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) pitched a complete game in game two for his first win of the season. Roper scattered seven hits, fanned four and did not walk a batter. Walsh snapped a 1-1 tie with a four-run fourth inning. Stephen Wido (Sr., North Royalton, OH/Padua Franciscan), who was 2-3 with a walk, doubled in the go ahead run, and Jake Palidar (Jr., Wadsworth, OH/HS), Brook Clark (Fr., Canton, OH/McKinley) and Bonnette followed with RBI singles.
