3.8.13 SOFTBALL: Cavs Cap Rebel Games with Defeat of Notre Dame

(KISSIMMEE, Fla.) – Walsh capped off a great spring break trip to start the season with a 2-1 victory over Notre Dame College at the Rebel Spring Games. The Cavaliers went 7-3 during the trip. The Falcons fall to 4-7 in the early season.

The Cavs took an early 1-0 lead in the opening frame as Kayla Marcus (Jr., Bergholz, OH/Edison) scored on a sacrifice fly by Chelsy Testa (Jr., Uniontown, OH/Lake). Marcus reached on a double to left field and advanced to third on a passed ball. A pair of errors allowed Marissa Bondoni (Fr., Alliance, OH/HS) to round the bases in the fourth inning. Notre Dame scored its run in the bottom of the fifth, but Crystal Pfleger (Sr., Mogadore, OH/Field) and Kaleight Cupka (So., Streetsboro, OH/Walsh Jesuit) were able to pick off a runner at third to end the Falcons’ threat to tie.

Bondoni went the distance for Walsh and gave up just four hits with two strikeouts against one walk. She improves to 2-1 on the season.

Earlier in the day, Walsh was shutout against Caldwell College (receiving votes nationally) by a score of 4-0. It was the Cougars first game of the season.

Erin Ebert (Sr., Jeromesville, OH/Hillsdale) took the loss to drop to 2-2 on the year after pitching 2.2 inning and giving up three runs on four hits with four strikeouts. Casi Rohr (So., Massillon, OH/Perry/Toledo) came in for the remainder of the game and fanned eight with one run on two hits and three walks in 4.1 innings of work.

Walsh will be off for two weeks until the conference season begins when Wayne State visits North Canton for a doubleheader on Saturday, March 23. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.

CAVALIERS NOTES – Chelsy Testa had a spectacular spring trip as she hit .393 (11-of-28) in 10 games. She hit two home runs, drove in eight runs, and recorded five of the team’s seven doubles. Casi Rohr is also fast out of the gates as she has a 0.77 ERA with a 3-0 record in five appearances. The Toledo transfer has 35 strikeouts and is limiting the opposition to a .147 batting average.
