Baseball, 2013-03-09

(Lakeland, FL) Walsh finished their spring trip to Florida in style, posting a 3-1 come-from-behind win over Saginaw Valley State University (2-7) this morning. The Cavs come home 6-4, and with a 3-game winning streak.

Saginaw took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning, when the Cavs tied the game with the help of a pased ball. Trevor Smith (Sr., Parma, OH/Holy Name) opened the inning with a single, moved to second base on Sam Fondriest's (Jr., New Philadelphia, OH/Tuscarawas Central Catholic) sacrifice bunt, and to third on a passed ball. Smith then scored the tying run on Tim Stinson's (Sr., Alliance, OH/Marlington) ground out to second.

Walsh took the lead with two runs in the eighth inning. With one out, Drew Link (Jr., Granville, OH/HS) reached base on an error by the pitcher, and promptly stole second. Forrest Boggs (Sr., Suffield, OH/Field) followed with a single through the left side to give the Cavs the lead. Boggs would advance to second base on the throw to the plate, and score the final run on Smith's single through the right side. Smith was 2-4 and Boggs 2-3.

Ian Drapcho (Jr., Dover, OH) started for the Cavs and worked the first 3.1 innings. He fanned four and allowed three hits. Joe Tann (So., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) came on and worked the rest of the way to even his record at 1-1. Tann fanned six and allowed only one run on three hits.

Walsh plays back-to-back double headers at West Liberty State University next Saturday and Sunday.
