4.10.12 BASEBALL: Cavs Sweep Cedarville 7-2; 11-8

Baseball, 2012-04-10

Walsh avenged a doubleheader sweep earlier in the season by taking two games against Cedarville today by scores of 7-2 and 11-8. The Cavaliers (22-16) have won 11 of their last 13 games and are the first team to sweep the Yellow Jackets (22-8) in a twin bill this season.

The Cavs controlled the first game from start to finish and started impressively with a four-run first inning. The frame was highlighted by a two-run home run by Tim Stinson (Jr., 5-10, Alliance, OH/Marlington), his third of the season. After the Jackets scored a run in the third inning, Walsh put up another pair on the board with a two-run homer by Sam Fondriest (So., 6-2, Dover, OH/Tusky Central Catholic) that made the score 6-1 in the fourth. An insurance run was added in the fifth with Cedarville’s final run coming in the sixth.

Travis Danner (Sr., 5-11, Medina, OH/HS/Cuyahoga CC) picked up his fifth win of the season and fourth complete game. He gave up two runs on eight hits with five strikeouts against one walk.

The night cap saw the Cavaliers outlast a feverish comeback by Cedarville. Walsh led 10-2 after a five-run fifth inning, but the Yellow Jackets answered with five runs in the sixth and one more in the seventh. However, the Cavs added a run in the sixth and Cedarville left five men on base across the final two innings as Walsh staved off the rally.

Tyler Jones (Sr., 5-10, Mansfield, OH/Madison) and Justin Clements (So., 5-9, Massillon, OH/Jackson) provided much of the offense in game two as both hitters went 3-for-4 with two doubles each. Jones scored three runs and drove in one while Clements scored two runs and had an RBI.

Billy Gura (Sr., 6-0, Sagamore Hills, OH/St. Peter Chanel) picked up the win to improve to 6-2 on the year. Zach Speer (Jr., 5-10, Stow, OH/HS) came on in relief in to earn his fourth save of the season.

Walsh returns to conference action on Friday as Point Park visits for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. Both teams will then play two in Pittsburgh on Saturday.
