Saginaw Valley scored two runs in the second and fourth innings in winning the opener 6-3. Two Walsh errors on the same play plated the first two runs in the Cardinal’s second. They then added two more runs in the fourth inning before Walsh added two runs of their own in the fifth. Calee Ruppel (So., Mogadore, OH/HS) doubled in the Cavs first run, and Dana Brown (Sr., Uniontown, OH/Lake) tripled in Ruppel to cut the Saginaw lead to 4-2. After the Cardinals got a run back in the top of the sixth inning, Walsh trimmed the lead to 5-3 on Eryn Simon’s (Jr., Oregon, OH/Clay) sacrifice fly. Casi Rohr (So., Massillon, OH/Perry/Toledo) started and was tagged with the loss to fall to 7-5. Rohr pitched 5.2 innings allowing five runs on five hits, with three walks and six strikeouts. Two of the runs Rohr allowed were unearned.
Erin Ebert (Sr., Jeromesville, OH/Hillsdale) went the distance in the nightcap to even her record at 5-5. Ebert fanned six and scattered eight hits and allowed only a run the final five innings. Trailing 5-3 after the two innings, Walsh rallied with a run in the third inning and took the lead with three runs in the fourth. Kayla Marcus (Jr., Bergholz, OH/Edison) singled to tie the game at 5-5, and Simon then delivered a two-run single to give the Cavs a 7-5 lead. Saginaw added a run in the fifth and Walsh added an insurance run in the top of the seventh on Marisa Bondoni’s (Fr., Alliance, OH/HS) RBI single to left. Brown and Simon each had three hits. Simon and Marcus each drove in a pair of runs and Bondoni also had two hits.
