4.12.14 MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD: 4x400 Sets Record Again

(PITTSBURGH) - Walsh traveled to the Steel City today as participants in the Robert Morris Bennie Benson Invitational on Saturday. Even though the meet wasn’t a team scored event, that didn’t stop the Cavaliers from posting some big results. On top of that, a few athletes participated in a meet at Bucknell and also posted some impressive results. 

To start off, the 4x400 meter relay team broke its own school record just set last week with a time of 3:16.36. It bests last week’s mark by four seconds. Seth Wieland (Fr., Uniontown, OH/Green), Paul Sonego (Fr., North Ridgeville, OH/HS), Craig Dougerty (Jr., Clinton, OH/Manchester), and Sherman Kortze (Fr., Green, OH/CVCA) all ran on the team. Overall they finished second by less than a second.

Jackson Zaremba (Jr., Canton, OH/GlenOak) recorded a second place finish in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 8:55.98. Wieland finished fourth in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.17 and Kortze finished fifth in the 400 meter run with a time of 49.65.

The 4x800 meter relay team finished first with a time of 8:17.39 and just edged out Robert morris by .39 for the win. Matt Mizer (So., Canton, OH/Perry), Kyle Denihan (Fr., Eastlake, OH/North), Nick Isla (Jr., Canton, OH/McKinley) and Devon Gates (Jr., Warrenville Heights, OH/HS) all competed on the team.

At Bucknell, Justin Groubert (Jr., Hartville, OHLake) hit a PR in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 3:56.01. Naimbai Njerakey (R-Fr., Seven Springs, VA/Wheaton) also record a PR by 12 seconds with a time of 14:56.05 in the 5,000 meter run.

The Cavs will next compete in their only home meet of the year this Thursday. Ashland, Malone, and Ohio Dominican will all compete in the quad meet. Walsh then will travel to Columbus to compete in the Jesse Owens Classic.
