4.13.12 BASEBALL: Cavs Swept by Pioneers
(North Canton, OH) Point Park (34-7, 6-0 AMC) defeated Walsh (22-18, 7-3) by scores of 3-1 and 11-6 in an American Mideast Conference double header today. In the first game, the Pioneers scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Walsh’s only run came on a pinch hit home run from Steve Wido (Jr., North Royalton, OH/Padua Franciscan) in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Cavs had runners on first and second with one out in the seventh, but Mike Tulllio retired Tim Stinson (Jr., alliance, OH/Marlington) and Forrest Boggs (Jr., Suffield, OH/Field/Mercyhurst) for his 10thsave of the season.
Derek Peluso pitched 6.1 innings to pick up the win and improved to 6-1. Walsh’s David Roper (Jr., Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) was the starter and loser and falls to 2-5. Roper went the distance.
The second game started well for Walsh, but the sixth inning proved fatal as Point Park rallied with eight runs in the frame to take a 9-6 lead. The Pioneers added two more runs in the final inning while shutting out the Cavs for their last six outs.
Walsh took a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to back-to-back home runs by Justin Clements (So., 5-9, Massillon, OH/Jackson) and Stinson. The Cavs added another run in the third and three more in the fifth for a 6-1 lead.
Horacio Acosta was credited with the win after coming on in relief for 1.2 innings to go to 2-0 on the season. Joe Tann (Fr., 6-3, Canton, OH/Central Catholic) took a no-decision after starting the game for the Cavs. He gave up four runs, two earned, on seven hits with seven strike outs against two walks in five innings of work. Roberto Morales (Jr., 5-8, Canfield, OH/Cardinal Mooney) took the loss to fall to 2-1.
Both teams are back in action tomorrow at Point Park. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
