Men's Lacrosse, 2013-04-13
A nine-goal second quarter propelled visiting Lake Erie to a 16-7 win over Walsh in ECAC D2 Lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Vasco Field. The Cavaliers are now 2-5 overall and 0-4 in the conference. The Storm, which was receiving votes heading into this week, are now 8-2 overall and 3-1 in the ECAC.
Walsh limited the Storm in the first quarter and yielded only three goals, but a 16-shot outburst in the second quarter did the Cavs in as 15 of those were on goal with nine finding the back of the net. It wasn’t until the 8:20 mark in the second quarter that Mason Axline (Jr., 5-7, Green, OH/HS) put Walsh on the board with an unassisted goal. That made the score 7-1, but Lake Erie answered with three consecutive goals.
The Cavs shutout the Storm in the third quarter while scoring a pair of goals. Lake Erie then outscored Walsh 4-3 in the final 15 minutes.
Axline finished with three goals, all unassisted, to lead the Cavs. He now has 17 goals on the season. Ben Stephens (Jr., 6-0, Murrysville, PA/Franklin) added a pair of goals and an assist. Jeff Balzano (Jr., 6-0, Chesterland, OH/West Geauga) made nine saves on the day on 24 shots faced. Jason Lockwood (Sr., 6-4, Powell, OH/Olentangy) played the second half and made eight saves on 25 shots faced.
